this is how it started focuses heavily on the early days of the chicago sound, especially in the formative years at ron hardy s music box.
following chicago s disco demolition night in 1979 the genre s popularity fell dramatically, hence fewer disco records being released.in this era chicago s djs such as hot mix 5, hardy, knuckles & jesse saunders played a variety of styles mixing in italo, electronic pop music, electro-funk and older disco joints often playing their own edits which focusing on the portions of the songs which always rocked the dancefloor. at the end of 1982, when dj frankie knuckles left the warehouse to open the power plant, ron hardy started to dj at the warehouse s new location until owner robert williams renamed it the music box. in 1984, a local label released a 12-inch single called -on and on- by locals jesse saunders & vince lawrence who had simple made the song in order to replace a record which had been stolen from saunders collection, the -on & on- bootleg disco megamix by mach. hence chicago house music was born and a modern day phenomenon followed.

another re-issue on dark entries. this time its a release by joe crow. joe crow is a post-punk musician from birmingham, england. he was a member of legendary brum band the prefects, and hung on long enough after the name-change to appear on a couple of early nightingales singles. in 1981 joe began his solo career and recorded a 2-song demo

the fx mchn has unplugged itself from the london housing trust offices just long enough to run off these three documents for narrow gauge. art 2 mouse starts with a gritty, little drum box punching way above its weight before the heavy machinery rolls in for reinforcement. mono life slows the tempo with a close-up shot of the intricate interlocking cogs of an fx mchn track. on the flip side we move to a wider-screen format for a helicopter ride over the oil-drum beats and tribal chants of no place to go .

its mildly comical, that tim wagner and amy douglas, two former long islanders would choose sunrise hwy (former sunrise highway) as the name for their venture, but one listen to the music, and its clear as to why they chose such a lofty and expansive name. sunrise hwy is atmospheric, sophisticated, broad, and most importantly a return to the song as king.

tresor records is fortunate enough to be sitting on a catalogue of past releases that no other label in electronic music would turn down. three of the &#64257,,,nest in this collection were albums contributed by surgeon, “basictonalvocabulary”, “balance” and “force + form” all originally came out on the berlin institution between 1997 and 1999. surgeon’s inimitable combination of detroit techno and post-industrial sounds emanating from his british homeland found its fullest expression in these masterful trio of releases on tresor. the basictonal-remake 12” accompanied surgeon’s &#64257,,,rst tresor album in 1997, with additional versions as well as a remix by long-time birmingham collaborator mick harris.

the supremes, the most commercially successful girl group in pop history, were one of the jewels in motown records artist stable. given wonderful material by motown s amazing songwriters, the group scored numerous number one pop hits, as did singer diana ross when she left the group and went solo, and motowns bright, modern, and uptown image as a label had a lot to do with the way these ladies gracefully and elegantly presented themselves and took over a song. two dozen of those number one hits, both as the supremes and as ross solo, are collected here, including the timeless classics *come see about me*, *you cant hurry love*, *you keep me hangin on* and *stop! in the name of love*. the album also features a bonus remix of *you keep me hangin on*.

recorded from rudys homemade studio in hampton virginia before he cut *searching for love* on harvest records around 1983, he did this wonderful modern synth winner. with rudy just having one pass on a reel of this song, we remastered it a little at the super disco hq to give it a brighter feel. sure its pretty lo-fi but the quality of the song writing playing and melodies are more than enough to let is see the joys of a turntable. this is once again a limited press.

the detroit music community has outposts in nearly every major city, and vancouver, british columbia is no exception. this ep represents the connection of two such artists, detroit native, josh garrett, who currently resides in vancouver and runs the subspec label, and rennie foster, a stalwart of the underground, who has spent a quarter of his life in tokyo, but born in bc and now living back there, in vancouver. rennie has released on a myriad of detroit labels, such as transmat, teknotika, soiree, subject detroit, wallshaker, and motech. josh and rennie met in vancouver, only since rennies recent return, and realizing they were of the same tribe, immediately began to collaborate on a number of projects, now including this limited run, double a-side, record, chalk full of dj friendly techno trax, firmly rooted in the motor city sound, yet unique enough to be a contributor, not just another imitator.

known as pantaleon perez prado, was the younger brother of the famous king of mambo. pantaleon, who came to europe in the 1950s, recorded several albums with unifunk. a powerful big funk band sound featuring: tullio de piscopo, mario rusca, paolo tommelleri, pino prestipino and others. for this second lp, the obscure vocalist don alfio had gained enough prestige within the band to share the top of the bill with the bandleader. that is probably because, in october 1973, the love child 45rpm (which has nothing to do with the 1968 supremes hit) had enjoyed a good airplay on supersonic, a daily italian public radio show that presented a lot of freshly released records. the djs explicitly credited the record to don alfio with perez prado. the reviving of chicago banana from escandalo!, plus many new tracks including circle, imperfect and the jazzy chato, gave the record a precise latin-funk attitude. bossanova evergreen bahia (also known as na baixa do sapateiro) and a synthled version of ciliegi rosa (cherry pink and apple blossom white) are the only two concessions to latin standards.

larry levans name is synonymous with contemporary dance music culture, his contributions are widely noted in many books and documentaries and in the memories of the lucky people who got to experience his phenomenal dj sets at the now legendary paradise garage in nyc throughout the late 70s until the late 80 s. his name is still mentioned with reverence today and he is listed as an influence by countless djs and artists across the world.

the raw ten is a collaboration between pittsburgh track authority and nic offer of !!!. *funny thing* is the first release by raw ten, a brand new collaboration uniting pittsburgh and new york city for maximum dancefloor devastation. following the path laid down by inner city so many years ago, *funny thing* is a vocal techno beast ready to do damage in the sets of deejays from deep underground all the way up to more mainstream. everyone will be vibing together in dance thanks to the soulful vocals of lou tanning alongside classic techno chords, but with banging drums and production values that could only come from today. in case the original wasnt enough, detroits church boy lou was enlisted for the remix, and it is a dubbed out jacking monster itself. jams as distinctive as these deserve to be treated right, so each one gets a full side 45 rpm cut from one of americas best dance music mastering engineers, dietrich shoenemann. the original full-color sleeve artwork is done by up-and-coming pittsburgh artist julie mallis.

mallorcas dakpa has been on a roll since amam released his debut ep last fall. he has contributed to several compilations, including amams own hand out series, kina music s fade to k pt. 3 and wizz vinyl s sonar sampler 2014, plus eps for labels like district raw and serial number 849. but amam gets the honor of issuing his first own vinyl release, the distres ep. the opening title track is an exercise in jacking minimalism, vibrant tech house with just the essentials, but more than enough to get the floor moving. then, ademus gets into a slightly more colorful groove, with tropical percussive interplay and some whooping voice for a humanistic accent (is that brigitte bardot?). on the flip, virgo gives a modern update to the frenzy of acid house. the title alone brings virgo four to mind. on that note, this one is an effective tool for warping minds and evoking spastic dance moves. finally, the dependable gaetano vinci a.k.a. hooved reinterprets ademus with a heavy dose of melodic funk and symphonic washes, making the track into an entirely new creation.

skylax welcomes f.t.g., known to house music scholars as freddy the groove, and his many friends for our next release in 2014. last year, f.t.g. and his italian partner in crime, marco riff (who also appears on this very record), pressed a very limited run of a single-sided, special throwback tribute to late 80s chicago house music. the track was aptly named ‘tribute ’89’, and it put a more dancefloor oriented twist on a track by a certain originator with the initials r.h. needless to say, it became highly sought-after incredibly quickly and fuel was further added to the fire by the repeated club play by none other than the dj idol ricardo villalobos. luckily for our followers, that original mix appears on this ep with another unreleased mix of the track and 2 originals featuring belfie and alex tea alongside f.t.g.with enough said about ‘tribute ‘89’ itself, the unreleased mix maintains the warehouse vibe with a heavy kick and bouncing bass pattern but takes it to another level with the introduction of rolling vocal cuts and a rather ravey synth line. flipping over the to b-side, we are treated with two tracks by f.t.g. and alex tea, named ‘public enemy’ and ‘bango’, with the former also seeing belfie lend a helping hand in the production. both of these originals round out the record nicely and cement it as another skylax release that is definitely not to be missed
