corbu are an electronic, indie-rock band from brooklyn, new york spearheaded by producer and multi-instrumentalist jonathan graves. corbu are jonathan, todd hoellerman (drums, keys), amanda scott (synths, percussion), julian ferraldo (guitar, keys) and brian murphy (bass, keys). named after french architect le corbusier, the band has a strong creative aesthetic. graves writes the music from visual ideas, which he translates into sound. corbu songs are often heard partially or entirely in dreams, and are influenced by films, physical spaces and a childhood love of nature and science fiction. and it works. corbus music is beautifully crafted, taking the listener on a journey from day to night, through exhilarating sunsoaked sonic landscapes to land softly on the surface of the moon. jonathan began singing and playing different instruments at age nine, and eventually fell in love with samplers and their ability to bend conventional sounds into something abstract and new.

cyan341 is bethnal green boy mark streatfield, returning to uncharted audio here with his new ep *coal train*. released ahead of the full length *far from home* album, this ep follows his earlier *disconnected* and *pattern 4* releases on uncharted audio (licensed by james zabiela and championed by the likes of move d and benjamin brunn). when we first heard the opening track it was signed on the spot – probably one of the finest uk techno rumblers we have heard in many a year.

we have been a fan of motor city drum ensemble since the brooding and eerie >escape to nowhere< in 2007 - a track that sounded like someone had listened to > french kiss< on acid and then tried to recreate what they heard. so when we started re-issuing romanthonys classics with fresh remixes, mcdes danilo plessow was always someone we wanted to on the project. it has taken 2 years to organise this mix and now it is finally here it doesnt disappoint. taking on > trust<, most people would head straight for the vocal but plessow instead eschews that idea for a warm, low slung dub mix reminiscent of muzique tropique and early glasgow underground releases by studio blue. as a more dj-friendly alternative he also delivered a completely instrumental dub mix.

next up on magic feet is a release by dark strands. tonys first release came via the first magic feet label sampler. since then his releases have caught the attention of a number of acclaimed djs, with daniel avery citing one of tonys tracks as one of the best he had heard last year. this is tonys first full vinyl release and shows exactly what he is capable of. the title track *return of the oscillator* has had people running to the booth every time its been played from london to croatia, as well as being fully road tested at alfos by sean johnston who also provides a superb remix under his hardway bros guise. the second track *galactic* slows the pace down and is perfect for those warm up sets.

after spending most of 2013 focused on building the oktave brand in chicago, jeff derringer returns to production with the release of the *closer ep* on prosthetic pressings. with this record, jef s sound evolves into the steely, hypnotic territory of his live performances. both originals, *further* and *closer*, delve into sonic textures and ambient tones not yet heard in jeffs music, while still keeping focus on the heavy, syncopated beats that have become his trademark.

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.

described in typically self deprecating manner as a vanity imprint in the classically ornery tradition, the pear growers series is a new label from chris madak, best known for his mind bendingly good output as bee mask. the first release sees material from madaks excellent spectrum spools long player when we were eating unripe pears get treated to remixes from celebrated techno artists surgeon and abdulla rashim. anyone who has heard surgeon playing the remix on his rinse fm show will agree that his unashamedly emotive breakbeat reworking of *the story of keys & locks* is arguably one of the simplest and most affecting remixes this year. complementing this, prologue and semantica artist abdulla rashim delivers a take on *unripe pears* that will resonate with anyone that has indulged in the elusive producers recent output on his own eponymous label.

after a remix for dasos so sexy last year, the german-peruvian artist martin patiño confirms his presence on popcorn records with an entire ep. to begin with, solid ground is born from the collaboration with astrid. we already heard them on the great hunter ep on cadenza at the beginning of the year. the result of this new featuring is an original techno track with all the good components you expect from tr707 drums to a xylophone melody, in addition to the sexy and reassuring voice of astrid. the american pezzner honored us with a particular interpretation. a deep theme, with percussions, long and subtle panpipes breathe. as if pezzner was paying tribute to martin patinos roots. finally, routinary coffes comes to conclude this warm and deep record done for the sweating parties of the upcoming winter.

lph whites latest is another made­for­the­club sureshot winner from label co­founder and ­owner jacques renault himself. if youve caught one of his sets around the world sometime this year, youve most likely heard the house banger? and consequently gone nuts. its impossible to resist the temptations of the bombastic drums, fat bass, chopped up vocals, and dubby synth hooks included within. a shining example of renault doing what he does best.

for its fifth release, brstl continues on its mission to unearth fresh and exciting artists from bristols electronic music scene, this time showcasing the debut release from idle hands employee shanti celeste. regular clubgoers in the city will have almost certainly heard her display her penchant for heavily swung rhythms in her dj sets, and her 12-inch for brstl manages to distil this passion into two elegantly produced house music groovers. recently unveiled on outboxxs podcast for resident advisor, the soulful new jersey-esque skip of >need your lovin< (baby) takes up the a-side, its gliding rhodes chords and playful melodies being propelled by a tough and irresistably funky beat that kerri himself would be proud of. over on the flipside, >result!< offers up a more heads-down vibe, channelling those swung beats into an upbuilding, synth-smeared house jam.

a demo tape, sent to capitol records by the trash company in the early 90s, garnered this curt response from then president of the r&b division, joy bailey: some music was never meant to be heard. thug records returns with one of the most intriguing releases to grace the catalogue so far. not restricted by any one scene, max monroe of the trash company produces a hypnotic medley of original hard edge rhythm & blues, soul dance and classic psychedelic punk wave textures. armed with a condition known as synesthesia meaning he perceives sounds, words and letters in terms of color and a 4 track cassette recorder, the trash company has spent the last 30 years as a bedroom recording genius.

when the house music phenomenon was beginning, chicago djs like ron hardy and new yorkers such as frankie knuckles and larry levan would edit records for their own purposes, removing the parts they felt to be superfluous, concentrating instead on extending grooves and hooks, often adding their own basic synth lines and toughening up the percussion with what have now become classic synthesizers and drum machines. warehouse classics vol.2 holds 4 killer tracks going from obscure disco to new wave, first popularised at the music box and rarely heard anywhere else. this time we have the rare luck to get detroit legend (u.r. keyboard player) niko marks joining forces with 4 astonishing & devastating versions of tom tom club, abc, donna summer & marvin gaye. musically, its as delightfully funky and uncomplicated as youd expect, a mesh of disco tracks and heavy, effect laden, machine-funk. essential item !!

forged in the pitch black recesses of underground berlin, long time conspirators sawlin & subjected have been making bold, distinct and largely faceless techno from the cloisters of their vault series home. now comes the first in a two-part ep for electric deluxe, titled foreign awake, a much broodier spacy homage than we’ve yet heard from the pair.

egyptrixx gives a glimpse into his forthcoming second album on night slugs with the vinyl-only cut *water (reduced)*. the hi-definition crystalline world of his previous album *bible eyes* has sunken, submerged. *water* takes place in some vast molten expanse, a subterranean electrical storm expressed as acid-tech. this 12 inch features the reduced dub, stripped of melody to for full hypnotic effect. the full version can be heard on the forthcoming album, titled *a/b til infinity*. on the flip: helix keeps bootlegging our records. he cuts up the masters and edits them up like fruity loops lego, applying the same post-timbaland stutter-logic that was amplified so dramatically in 03-06 grime. here he puts his hand to egyptrixx blastbeats-heavy *adult*, also taken from the forthcoming *a/b til infinity* lp. the results are extremely punishing but compelling listening.

review: japans 9dw release their first track for is it balearic..? right on is a super chilled loopy slo mo disco gem. touches of soft acid and boogie bassline make this a certain for the more discerning dancefloor. the mushrooms project remix creates an ever growing tribal dubby trip with what sounds like a jews harp thrown in for good measure. mesmerising. the b side features a track that has been an iib favourite for a couple of years since it was heard live in loop tokyo. this slowave almost out of sync techy chugger is not like anything else. evolving with analogue synths and stabs to become a heads downs stomper. international man of mystery man power adds man power to the track and creates a slightly darker journey into synth land
