thomas brinkmann is one of the great producers of techno music and modern dance music. he initially gained notoriety in the experimental electronic music and techno community for his full-length variations of material by wolfgang voigt under his mike ink moniker, and richie hawtin. the variations were made by playback of the original artist records on a turntable of brinkmann s design, which has two tone arms with separate outputs for left and right channels. the turntables were then pitched down from 33rpm to 27rpm and the results recorded and mixed. both voigt and hawtin were sufficiently impressed they released the results on their own labels. since then thomas brinkmann has produced some all-time classic dance tracks, many of which are collected here in what is a personal selection by thomas brinkmann himself. there are unreleased tracks, different versions, and tracks that have never been released on vinyl. a full colour 20-page book with track notes by thomas brinkmann and photos from his personal collection is included. limited edition box. highly recommended! ean4050486123461

nicolas bougaïeff presents his new ep on seminal british imprint novamute. as a producer he harbours a diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. he is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as mutek and ableton loop – the results of which come to life in the inquisitive spirit of his productions. cognitive resonance explores elements of acid, gabber and techno through a compositional lens, drawing on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms and long-standing relationship with the electronic music community. the title track lays out long, expansive phrases and warped crescendos to create a disorienting structure, whilst distant harmonies, distorted kick drums and shattering effects merge into a hypnotic form on ‘truthful hyperbole’. lastly, ‘fake news’ mangles our sense of rhythmic familiarity, disrupting the 4/4 beat with a complex metre and sinister melody. listen to the title track here. nicolas will follow this release with an album on his own denkfrabik label, ‘principles of newspeak’ is due out on the 24th of november. this is novamute’s first release since motor (bryan black and oly grasset) over ten years ago. the label, a subsidiary of mute (depeche mode, goldfrapp, new order, liars, erasure, moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the uk. originally presenting white labels and imports, novamute went on to release records by plastikman, speedy j, juan atkins, luke slater and joey beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as tresor and probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience. forthcoming releases on novamute will include eps from terence fixmer and charlotte de witte.

in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

in 1973, emi records nigeria released the 45 rpm disc fuel for love b/w soundway, credited to a mysterious band called wrinkar experience. the record was a finely-crafted gem of pop-rock and funky soul as had never before been heard coming out of the countryÆs nascent rock scene, and it ended up being the biggest selling nigerian single up until that point. the success of wrinkar experience effectively demonstrated that was a market for homegrown pop and rock, and sent record labels scrambling to sign similar bands, kicking off the nigerian rock revolution that is still being celebrated and discovered by new generations today. but while wrinkar experience launched the movement, the group itself would be short-lived: after another hit single in 1973, the bands frontman danie ian split for a solo career. the remaining principal players in the group cameroonian musicians ginger forcha and edjoo jacques racine tried to keep the wrinkar name going before giving it up and rebranding themselves as rock town express. rock town expresss debut lp funky makossa was recorded in 1974 for arc records, the cutting-edge studio and label established in lagos by english drum legend ginger baker. the album showcased in long format the qualities that had only been hinted at on the wrinkar experience singles: bright, confident pop melodies, articulate lyrics, and darkly potent funk-rock. comb & razor sound is proud to present a new, fully-authorized reissue of funky makossa, featuring the seven tracks from the original release, plus i am a natural man and i dont want to know, from wrinkar experiences seldom-heard third and final single.

circus company and the mole have long been making eyes at each other across the same crowded dancefloor. colin de la plante?s primary project is synonymous with the off-kilter corner of house music we like to spend our time dancing in, and the labels he releases on are close cousins of the circus troupe. from wagon repair to philpot, musique risquee to perlon, it?s a wonder that we haven?t worked together previously, but finally that?s been put right with little sunshine. stripped back, understated disco grooves have always been the bread and butter of the mole?s sound, while infectious, cyclical melodic patterns are equally important in making his unique version of house music. on the title track, those elements are presented with full force, but in between the driving rhythms linger the most gorgeous keys, bringing a mellow introspection to the track as a neat counterpoint to the energy of the drums and arpeggios

iron curtis back catalogue is a formidable beast within the realms of deep and tech house, touching on labels like morris audio, jackoff, sudden drop and mule electronique. he s intermittently popped up on hudd traxx as well, and he returns with a fulsome new ep that hints at a forthcoming second part.lights- is a bold, chiseled peak timer with some emphatic string stabs coursing through it, while captured takes a slinkier route without dulling the impact of the curtis studio approach. 22 days is a funkier concern that lets the low end synths do the brunt of the work, and then my humming machines rounds the ep off with a warm and bubbling deep house roller for a cosier part of the night.
