since 2009 xxxy, aka rupert taylor, has released a string of 12 inches through labels like infrasonics, well rounded and ten thousand yen that have showed off his idiosyncratic takes on uk garage and bass-driven house. his debut for rinse picks up where they left off, with three tracks of shimmering, synth-led house music, marked out by taylor’s distinctive spiralling melodies and sampled voices.

the multicultural artist arash (with persian origins) made his first contact with electronic dance music in the mid 90s. mainly influenced by the classic house sound of the 90s and the german electronic music scene around frankfurt, he found his passion to house & techno music. as a teenager he started to spin vinyl and got deeper & deeper into the world of dance music and club culture. after a few years of loving & living he started to host & play on his own parties in the region with his own touch and view of electronic dance music. this was followed by appearances in various clubs and off locations. his dj sets are made of a danceable mixture of groovy deephouse and techhouse. 2011 arash started to take his passion on the next level with shaping his own sound. since then he released tracks on record labels like kiara records (barcelona), bla bla (amsterdam), be real (amsterdam) and night drive music (berlin). arash is definitely an artist to keep a close eye and ear on!

the first release on project squared in a year, *make your mess* is a three track ep by melbournes craig mcwhinney. craig has been making music for years and releasing since the late 2000s on melbourne labels such as pinksilver, melbourne deepcast and his own haul music, also on labels based further afield such as brendon moellers steadfast and speedy js electric deluxe. craigs music is techno, but it isnt preoccupied with the 4/4, employing broken, swung and rolling drum patterns. his tracks often include melodic and harmonic elements and effects reminiscent of dub techno but without conforming to the pastiche template of the sub-genre. the make your mess ep is composed of the core title track and two additional tracks that arose as interpretations and variations on the initial production: *provocation is an excuse* is more furious and loud, *disengage* is more restrained. all three are around 125 bpm and were produced in the space of a month between september and october 2012.

french-native and barcelona-inhabitant, shade, makes his rvs debut with this lush and authentic slab of deep house. whilst his name may be fresh on rvs, he is no stranger to house music, having been an active member of the parisian house community for over 15 years. as well as running the much-lauded polyphonics records since 2004, julien shade has made appearances as an artist on illustrious labels such as silver network and pschent.

portuguese troia phonograph kicks off 2013 with a stunning release. pedro goyas music is well known for his past releases on such labels as classic music company, music for freaks, brique rouge, exun, om. the approach is slight different this time (if you are familiar with pedros music). refined, full and risky, that is how we would name it. both tracks are long stories that keep you interested all the way. impressive sound signature, bouncy basslines, tight rhythm section and soul all around turn this record into something that cannot be done by accident or randomly. this is how a deep house record should sound.

upon the first listen, the work of fernando unfolds directly on your brain and leaves a long lasting feeling of drama. fernando pulichino is one those lucky guys who can pick up any instrument and write songs without breaking a sweat. he first caught my attention with a remake of the bauhaus classic kick in the eye released on redux in 2008. he then backed up this great start with releases and remixes for labels like international feel, under the shade, internasjonal and nang. he also very busy touring as part of the 2020 soundsystem band and he is also in silver city with julian sanza.
we decided to put together a long player to highlight the talents of our man in buenos aires. the construction of *float* reveals an astonishing wealth of musical ideas, brazen touches of new wave and icy modern disco sounds are evident throughout. low slung basses are also a theme that runs right through *float* whether it is the opening song *a place* which has a monster electronic bottom end or *from out there* which sits firmly on the punk funk dinner table, bass lines are clearly important to fernando.

echocord is back with the first release of 2013. the first ep this year will be by the echocord veteran mikkel metal aka mikkel meldgaard, who keep turning back to echocord and echocord colour. after many eps and albums he is now back with his new record without ep. without ep is a very solid and diverse release putting a fine variety in production on display. from the slow tough groove of parre work through the rolling groove with filtered themes of retro and finally to the more classic electronica sounding until its over we are unmistakably and safely in the hands of mikkel metal. mikkel metal has been releasing on many differnt labels over the last 10 years, lately also signed to the lovely labels tartelet and the label semantica

the small, exquisitely formed take records maintain their reputation for tracks that elegantly live their life on the peripheries of house and techno with this release from one of the labels co-owners, rick grant, and a fine cabal of remixers. the west london-based producers original mix adopts the full widescreen effect, cascading deep bass throbs and a trembling metallic clatter across a ponderous 2-step click. consequences reworking wires in some heavy-ass sub-bass transmissions and a rapid-fire hi-hat rhythm, before jack dixons late-night submission takes a clockwork 4/4 tempo and bolts a springy, low-slung bassline to it, accompanied by layers of velvety synth patterns. crossing is an ep of uniformly consistent quality, where texture and atmosphere take the spotlight.

after two years, the labels owner alex piccini returns with a new ep and first vinyl on kosmophono. a collaboration with subspace that delivers two great examples of what the label wants to bring this year. elpmis has all the elements to drive you mental, the dark bass goes underneath the skin and the melody building up slowly throughout the track can take you to another world.

javi bora and le vinyl have released music for reputable labels such as 2020 vision, off, robsoul, catwash and loco records. both producers maintain a heavy dj schedule on their home turf of spain and further afield, building their reputations as two of spains most prominent deep house artists. this record marks a milestone for hudd traxx as they reach their 40th release, its no surprise looking back that the label has such a highly praised reputation within the underground, having put out cuts from dj sneak, agnes, sascha dive, rick wade and rolando to name a few.

kalimero is back again. their seventh catalogue number is standing in the wings awaiting you as a three track ep, one original & two remixes. melchior bachmann delivers his second release on kalimero together with his producing mate extd. will, a new berlin-based talent and long-term companion of the labels artists. they created *play*, a deep tech-house revelation that is simply catching everything what each of us is referring as to groovy and pressing it into eight minutes of pure emotional dancefloor energy. this is also caused by dennis degenharts great singing work. the remixes are contributed by mario aureo and luis leon. marios remix is keeping the tech-house grooves and keys and transforms them into a marching and pumping peaktime tune. side b is completely left to luis leon, a very talented producer and dj from peru, who did nothing less than turning *play* into an deep house anthem - a journey that has all the time to evolve itself.

cadenza records kick starts its 10th year in the game with hunter, a release that balances the warm and cinematic productions of martin patinos original mixes, with the dark and powerful remix by young upstart, julien bracht. with previous releases and remixes on labels such as freerange, suara, trapez and rotary cocktail, patino is carving out an expansive and eclectic deep house sound, and his talents are perfectly captured on this release

scape one is producer of minimal electronic music from england. he rose to prominence with his electro work writing for labels like electrix, scsi-av and templedog. he has been writing music since the 1980s and uses mainly analog hardware in his productions. he also writes under his real name of kurt baggaley and also recently launched his tau sagittarii project into deep space with his experimental electronic scores.

over the last year i have traveled to canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. cities like montreal, vancouver and toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as egyptrixx, azari & iii, basic soul unit, jacques greene, lunice and sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like turbo recordings and naked lunch. this *dovercourt ep* features three very talented producers: kevin mcphee, nautiluss and gingy. their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of toronto. being removed from the house/techno epicentres of berlin and london, these three are much less interested in what is fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. i have been playing these three extensively in my dj sets, and i hope you will too. so out to toronto, this one is for you! enjoy. martyn
