poolside began as a recording project in a converted los angeles backyard pool house in early 2011, producing sunny tracks of subaquatic indie dance music in this makeshift recording studio. surfacing first in the form of a youtube video for the catchy track Òdo you believe?Ó poolside were soon gaining local and national attention, with djs like james murphy of lcd soundsystem, techno legend derrick may, and disco don todd terje spinning these tracks at events and a growing online following. throughout 2011 poolside continued making waves with a sound called Òdaytime discoÓ through tracks like their cover of neil youngÕs Òharvest moonÓ and original tunes. in 2012 poolside worked on a remix for longtime disco punks the rapture and held fans over with a new single and video for a song called Òslow downÓ as they prepared to release their debut album. that album, pacific standard time, was self-released in july of 2012. after the albumÕs release, remixes for artists like matthew dear, little dragon and foolÕs gold soon followed, as well as rehearsing and touring with a live band and doing dj sets around the world. as thoughts turned to a second album, poolside went on ice for a year to regroup, beginning to work in earnest on another album in the fall of 2016. while still revolving around the sunny, laid-back disco sound of pst, these sessions yielded the additions of up-tempo dance songs and more guitars, and generally more fleshed-out arrangements. poolside surprise released their second album heat in 2017. poolside have over 1.5 million monthly listeners on spotify and have fans all over the world. they are currently on tour as a live band.

migration cinema is a new moniker of the sonic practitioner and composer el’as merino. grisaille, his release for e/c, adopts a varied approach to the pattern of emergence within merinoÕs work. these seven recordings present not only electronic, but mostly instrumental trajectories, whose densities are unfolded through a huge collection of music performers. migration cinema creates a situation for the musicians in which they navigate a resonant and responsive compositional space, while the space itself is treated as a plastic medium. * grisaille suggests an unconventional view of chamber and instrumental contemporary music from a culture alien in both space and time, heard through the filter or sieve of iannis xenakisÕ architectural and physical approach to sound. alternating between opacity and translucency, monochrome and colour, grisaille conjures a spectral palette reminiscent of fredrich cerha, but with an approach to instrumental hybridisation more reminiscent of the electroacoustic worlds of ana maria avram and iancu dumitrescu. * grisaille was written, recorded, and produced by el’as merino between 2013 and 2016 in spain and england, and includes across its seven tracks more than 24 performers and a student choir. all the instrumentation has been written, scored and orchestrated through computer music methodologies such as algorithmic and generative systems. grisaille swims into hybrid spaces from acoustic reverberations captured by the artist itself at notre dame (paris, france), basilica di sant eustachio, (rome, italy), and eglise st. laurent, (marseilles, france).

hot off the heels of the beautiful obsolete machines lp released this month, radiuss cassette demo restoration project returns to form with the interpolation tapes series. the original source tapes had aged, warped and degraded and as a result we ve preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed with a vintage prophet 2000 sampler, studio 440 and various linn samplers to add depth and range to the original source material. we ve spent nearly an entire year restoring and interpolating over 100 hours of music, processing sound and redesigning the blueprints of this long forgotten project. every track was originally recorded down to an old tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life. it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and re-arranging these masters, regardless of the time passed, there s so much depth in sound design, raw emotions and when considering the limitations of hardware in the era these were recorded, they ve truly aged like a fine wine. we hope you enjoy this magical time in music, as we are very inspired by all that was happening in those years, theres undeniably something in the air, a mystifying energy, long may it live on.

rezzs involvement in the toronto scene helped grow her gritty style. events like bassmentality and older shows at the legendary guverment helped shape not only rezz, but an era of electronic music producers who became inspired from early dj college tours. mass manipulation is a commentary on how easily our minds can become manipulated by the things we consume in society. we consume heavily through the media, which, in turn, tries to curate our thoughts and dictate how we as humans are supposed to live and behave. this album plays off this idea and invites people to become hypnotized, allowing their brains to be manipulated by my music in the hope they might see things through a new perspective (perhaps an outer world viewpoint) one where everyone is free from the unrealistic expectations planet earth has drawn for them. a world of acceptance and hypnosis.

the follow up of the acclaimed first volume of this compilation, a real discovery for many djs and music lovers worldwide who didnt know that much about zouk or diy electronic music of the french west indies. the selectors julien achard and nicolas skliris continue the excavation of french antillas vinyl from the 80Õs and the 90s and for this second volume, they found some really exciting new references which should be soon classics on the dancefloors.

recently, superpitcher was invited to go on a safari in south africa. he bought a custom made safari hat at his favorite milliner in cologne (ju&#776,rgen eifler) and set off with big eyes and a pair of binoculars. it was wild and wonderful and he saw many exotic (and big!) animals, even a leopard in a tree that told him the secret of the universe. he forgot what the leopard said because his mind was still playing and replaying the sound of what he heard on the first night of his arrival Ð the hypnotic and moving sound of the voices of africa, the voices of the wonderful tanda tula staff choir. there, the choir members work during the day at the camp and at night entertain the guests with their captivating voices and energetic dancing. so impressed was he with their songs and beautiful shangaan language that he decided to record a cd for them to sell in the shop at their camp and now this precious recording is also available through hippie dance / bush recordings on vinyl and cd for you in whatever wherever camp you are. the lp of the tanda tula choir comes with a very pretty poster.

semiomime is the more spherical alter ego of dj hidden/the outside agency. 6 years after his previous album Òfrom memoryÓ and his Òsix stepsÓ ep . it was time to return to mindtrick records with a new album. for their first multi-artist compilation, music from memory take us on a trip to the heart of the amazon rainforest. outro tempo: electronic and contemporary music from brazil, 1978-1992 is a double lp that explores the outer reaches of brazilian music, where indigenous rhythms mix with synthesizers and where mpb mingles with drum computers. as brazil faced the last years of its military dictatorship and transition to democracy, a generation of forward-thinking musicians developed an alternative vision of brazilian music and culture. they embraced traditionally shunned electronic production methods and infused their music with elements of ambient, jazz-fusion, and minimalism. at the same time they referenced the musical forms and spirituality of indigenous tribes from the amazon. the music they produced was a complex and mesmerising tapestry that vividly evoked brazilian landscapes and simultaneously reached out to the world beyond its borders.

with many influences, the musicians of la mano create a peculiar sound, a rock-salsa-ra•-reggae-rap cocktail which they baptize patchanka. manu chao, who writes lyrics, gives to the patchanka a more personal definition: a popular dance with apache lyrics and chorizo spirit. the band starts touring across france in october 1987 and rapidly establishes a solid reputation. a few months later, when the second record putas fever is released, the success is obvious. tracks sung in french, spanish or arabic, pas assez de toi, king kong five or sidi hbibi are immediate hits. after a long live-cruise in 1992 along the south american coasts, la mano negra gets back to france and separates in 1994. its hard to tell the impact of la mano negra across french and spanish speaking countries, with as many particular experiences that people lived during their tours.

though the origin of trance music lies back in the late eighties, there are still tons of trance fans out there whoÕve been enchanted by the early days of the genre. they are the same people whod lose themselves completely in their all-time favorite trance tune and would give anything to hear an all-classics live set. today, their hearts may have skipped a beat or two as armin van buuren released the twelfth installment of his Ôa state of trance classicsÕ series. stacked full of seminal records from the likes of above & beyond, armin van buuren, atb, chicane, cosmic gate, gareth emery, markus schulz, paul van dyk, signum, super8 & tab and more, Ôa state of trance classics, vol 12Õ turns any moment into a trip down memory lane. featuring a grand total of 36 classics in their extended, unmixed forms as well as an opening track that pays tribute to the pioneering efforts of the late robert miles, it stirs the embers of the near-ancient crowd favorites and allows them to entrance the world in the same manner they did years back. for anyone who looks back on the early years of trance with a smile brighter than the sun, a state of trance classics, vol.12 is a must-have.

an unreleased classic from the vaults emerges with beautiful reshapes by cv313 (recorded and reshaped from 2007-2016) this is where the sound of cv313 was realized, culled from cassette tapes recorded live (1995-2000) with nothing but analog/digital hardware, no computer in sight (excluding our commodore 64 midi sequencer, which is still alive and well today). the radius project has been absent since the final release in 2001, the first 12- appearing in 1996 (limited white label run of 100 copies pressed at acme pressing in canada) after revisiting these works we realized there was truly some magic here. this project was initially sent to rod modell & mike schommer shortly after they launched their brilliant deepchord label in 2001. they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. (that is of course, if you can get past the tape hiss) we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life, it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting these masters.

through the sparkle is a collaboration between french ensemble astr•d and american pianist and composer rachel grimes. rachel grimes is best known for her chamber music project rachelÕs, a hugely influential group formed in 1991 in louisville, kentucky, releasing six studio albums between 1995 and 2005. she has also released a string of contemporary classical works in recent years on labels such as temporary residence. astr•d is a collective of four musicians based in nantes, releasing records on rune grammofon and home normal. after years of mail and email back and forth over the ocean, from nantes to kentucky, astr•d invited rachel to come for a residency to make music together and play shows in france. they gathered for a few days, here and there, in 2012 and 2013 to write songs in cyril and vanina s home studio in the countryside.

pianos have featured in house music since day one. there s just something about the combination of looping piano chords and a skipping house groove which works so well. in contemporary dance music the piano still remains intrinsically linked to house, though it was in the late 80s and 90s that the true piano house classics were created. we took it to our hearts. the emotionally charged piano riff became a defining motif of uk dance music. producers knew they only had to alight upon a suitably uplifting three-chord piano hook in order to unleash a tide of misty nostalgia for rave s halcyon days. ministry of sound are proud to present piano house classics.

it was in february 2015 when japanese producer and sound designer kuniyuki takahashi, sometimes known as koss, releases with the ep ™newwave project ¾2š a record, that tapped some roots of his mu-sical education: new wave, german electro punk from bands like a daf, ebm from acts like front 242 as well as industrial music. styles, about kuniyuki claims that they are his ™favourite musicš. now, nearly two years after his first newwave project ep, he drops an album that is leaning towards his musical love from the past. com-pared to his former work, that was rooted in worlds of classic, jazz, house, ambient, and electronic song-writing, his new tunes are full of melodic drifts and rhythmical shifts. as usual all is loaded with tones and rhythms straight from the heart that filter and modulate human emotions without losing their natural source. to get a sound that is fresh but still leaning to the 1980ees, he used some old synthesisers like a roland jupiter 8, a juno 60, a korg ms 20, an old tape echo machine but also new instruments like the roland aira. furthermore, his modular synthesizers talk too.

island people is a new band project consisting of mastering engineer conor dalton, grammy award winning producer david donaldson, and musician and dj graeme reedie. on their first self- titled record, they present their collaborative work that evolved over the past three years. being based in different cities, namely berlin and glasgow, files had to be exchanged back and forth between the three band members in order to create tracks. for their delicate sound structures, field recordings and other sound sources were heavily processed and rendered unrecognizable. layer after layer, the tracks came into being quiet naturally, not only reflecting their continuous way of working, but also incorporating their different and individual backgrounds: Òduring the whole creation of the album, we never realized our actions were quickly leading us into forming Èisland peopleÇ, we were too busy having fun, making music and sharing ideas.Ó the result of their collaboration is a timeless music that is as open as a natural phenomenon, developing a certain feeling of euphoria over time. all in all, Èisland peopleÇ is a pure listening record in the best tradition of ambient.
