�we are what you think we are� is the tenth dispatch from the crew here at lost soul enterprises, new york city, usa. this compilation features a whopping 15 artists who together represent all corners of the label�s extended family, with frequent local collaborators paired with past guests of our various parties. it is served with love from us to you on 3 slabs of vinyl released in 3 installments.
each installment charts a different component of our sound: 10.1 highlights the influences of synthwave and postpunk electronics, 10.2 is comprised of razor-sharp acid and overdriven electro, and 10.3 delves into darker shades of industrial techno. together, all of these elements loosely sketch our little corner of the sonic universe. with this humble offering we tried to capture and share with you a little sliver of what we�ve found together in hazy rooms full of flashing lights and strange sounds.

�good as i been to you� from 1992 is an album with modest ambitions. recorded at his malibu home in his garage studio, it is filled with traditional folk songs, bluegrass standards & other covers. there isn�t an original composition in sight, still its an intimate portrait of a legendary musician.
original vinyls arent easy to come by, so it was a no-brainer to re-issue this classic album on 180 grams audiophile vinyl!

los angeles based natan h and malta based artist owen jay return as gauss with their first ep of 2017. entitled resonator it offers more deep music with an electronic soul and is their fifth ep for their cultured label gauss ltd. the title track opens things up with a crunchy and impactful mix of weighty dub drums and spangled techno chords. it s a heavy track that builds in momentum and is sure to mangle minds with its skewed stabs and wiry electronics. shifted is a more fierce techno track with urgency in the kicks and a sense of anger in the coarse little snare explosions. more gurgling synths add weight and this one is a real stomper as a result. cutting ever more loose, odyssey is a mix of idm sound design, soulful synth smears and percolating electro tinged drums that are slick and futuristic. least squares completes this techno picture with spitting hits and claps, underwater chords and acidic sonar pulses that soothe the mind. this is an expansive ep that marks an exciting evolution in gauss s sound.

after the huge success of their first collaboration, doorly and el prevost are back for part two: this time the world touring doorly serves up a hot original that gets remixed by red rack�em and el prevost, while el prevost also serves up an original of his own, all on his own no speakers label. the first ep, featuring a lee foss remix, got support form the likes of paco osuna, solomun and groove armada and this second instalment is set to be just as big this summer. doorly is a dance heavyweight who headlines clubs like space ibiza on his global travels, releases on cajual, hot creations and dirtybird and is no stranger to hitting high places in the charts with his big and infectious sounds. as a dj he is energetic and can make a mark on any dance floor, and so will this new tune, �sonder.� it is six superbly deep and atmospheric minutes of warm, rolling drums and searching synths that bring an intergalactic feel next to twinkling keys. jostling percussion brings a little loose funk and the whole thing is sure to lock in dance floors. el prevost then steps up to remix after 15 years of putting out killer cuts on labels like third ear. his music has made its way into the record bags of tastemakers like steve bug, dj hell and steffi and this excellent remix shows off his singular style again. it is a little tougher and more energetic than the original, with sprinkled hits, rumbling bass and pixelated synth lines dancing about up top. then comes red rack�em, the bergerac boss who had a huge hit with �wonky disco bassline banger� last year. it was one of the tracks of the year and has been followed by an equally brilliant album by this esteemed house veteran. his remix here is big, bouncy and off kilter thanks to its coarse hi hats and punchy rubber drums. great vocal treatment adds more wonkiness and broad synth strokes flesh things out into another sure-fire party starter that sounds like little else. last but not least, el prevost offers up a solitary state mix of his own �temper mental�. it�s a hugely inventive track with great synth modulations burrowing deep into your brain as dancing hi hats and whirring bass encourage you to cut loose and shift freaky shapes. this is a strong ep that really packs a punch across four standout tracks.

ian blevins has been busy making a name for himself on esp institute and futureboogie, but now he comes to not an animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. -the birds- is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there s some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. man power then step up with a -tropical bastard- remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. -locate yourself- on the flip finds blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it s a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he s known for.

helena hauff s label continues to subvert all expectations by celebrating the truly underground and ignoring all expectations to provide obvious club material in line with her dj sets. instead we get treated to blood sport, a daring post punk band with a whiff of the pop group in their frenzied, messy style and plenty of sonic trickery occurring in between the intricate playing. -harsh realm- has the textural finish of earliest cabaret voltaire, but with a little more deft playing from the intensely talented players. -boiled in dust- meanwhile has a distinctly afrobeat-meets-industrial spirit that makes for striking, original material that should appeal to lovers of the truly alternative side of british music culture.

reissue of a classic! the label: tk records in essence represents the city of miami when it came to soul/r&b and the early stages of disco. in 1974, george mccrae gave the label its first no. 1 disco hit with rock your baby. a little more than a year after mccrae s hit, the record label struck gold with kc & the sunshine band with five 1 songs on the billboard hot 100. needless to say at the height of the genreÆs cultural domination tk did pretty well.

thule s dark doppelganger ae recordings was revived last year with the excellent freyja ep by nonnimal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from cold. much like the vibe on thule, the music on thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there s definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from cold. -aerials- is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while -phased out- lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. -exiles- is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average thule jam.

pacific horizons are outliers, largely unconcerned with much that goes on beyond their la studio. immersed in their own universe of sound, the pair cherry pick from genres to create their own raw, lo-fi take on what, if you must pin it down, can be defined as loosely balearic. the duos sound calls on various eras of pyschedelia through the years. from the scene s roots to the very modern but always circles back to the initial shamanic intention of mind altering ritual. drawing heavily on the raw and rugged west coast for inspiration they posses a sound entirely indigenous to their locality and peers. this stark individuality has brought the project to the attention of such seminal characters as francois k, andrew weatherall and david mancuso. pacific horizons are drawn back down to earth again by deus records for a rare excursion away from their pacific wizard foundation imprint, teeing up one side of an exclusive 7-. on remix duty peaking lights provide the perfect foil. the fellow west coast artists are kindred spirits in pushing against the norm but here bring some order to the release, segueing the raw ideas into a their own blissful, rolling balearic experience. equal parts melancholia and euphoria, burning stars dub version is entirely complimentary to the original track, giving space and structure to some of the more volatile elements of the original. anything pacific horizons put their name to exists to revel in the purity and energy of the original moment of creation, little if any editing is done once the song is whole, making them the perfect artists for this limited edition release full of spontaneity and ideas. pressed on 7 inch white vinyl in full picture sleeve.

a brand new instalment in the trans afryka series, that is loosely inspired by the sounds of the black continent and devoted to club-oriented afro-house. riding the waves of success with sold out volume 1, zambon employed three talented producers to bring more goods to the table. transatlantyk regulars like dj dook and universo are joined by a newcomer tamten and together deliver a bomb of an ep! aptly titled afro acid by dj dook is exactly what it says on the sleeve - raw dj tool with squelchy samples, mantra-like vocal loop and focused vibe. think of an soundtrack to a futuristic version of apocalypse now. just the perfect peaktime beats to heat the party a little bit more. praise song by universo is built on a wandering bassline reminiscent of malian blues with tribal chants, penny whistles and various sorts of percussions on top. this beautiful groove rolls and rolls without end, like an endless summer. ukukhnaya by tamten is the most atmospheric out of the three, fusing new age midi sounds with the vibes of south african deep house.

sonold is the starting point for this four-track ep. there�s a distinct air of mystery looming over this minimal workout. the globulous bassline bounces along supporting by clapping beats with an eerie tone that prevails throughout.
this is followed by more alluring atmospherics on �aporia�, a track that has an elastic b-line and every once in a while an enchanting melody drifts in, switching up the vibe turning things a little more dreamlike.
turn the record and prepare to embark on a �random night�. this is sonodab turning up the energy levels and taking you on a trip into another dimension to close out the ep �elecmann�, plays out like an ode to the good old electro days, slightly reminicent of juan atkins� early work as model500. like the rest of the tracks on this release, sonodab adds soft pads in places to change the mood and keep things moving.

with just one 7inch release to their name in the form of the 1981 release, jive baby on a saturday night, the cult of the jellies was possibly accidentally assured with the long lost song being rediscovered by collectors and championed by sonic youth s thurston moore no less. picked up and reissued by the stellar trunk records in 2010, the b-side cut, however, was sadly overlooked. now emotional rescue are proud to license the conversation and remaster it especially for this rerelease. based around a simple drum and bass rhythm, interspersed with crowd noise, playful female vocal yelps and sprinkled with dub effects thrown in to the mix and you wouldn t probably think too much would be going for a track that the band put together in the last two hours of their studio time after jive baby had been completed. however, what you get is a killer gem of pop-punk-dub oddness that gets your head nodding to its infectious, repetitive rhythm laden with effects. with just this one (perfect) track available for license it seemed only right to hand it over to the in-house production team, apophenia, to do their increasingly trademark dubbed out reworking, this time in the form of a true, but respectful version for the flip. with both members of the jellies sadly now living overseas this piece of early 80s british dub as it were, can now be fully treasured for posterity while also, proving a nice little smokers delight.

a concept album is the best way to get back to being agan. -amplification of movements- (2017) is the first full-length album of giuseppe carlini, already a member of plaster with gianclaudio h. moniri (kaeba). a work inspired by and dedicated to the natural reserve of vico lake, in italy. during a four-year period, from 2012 to 2016, the artist focused on the wildlife of the area in the province of viterbo, considering it both as an inspiring muse and an object of study. -amplification of movements- was developed little by little, in the wake of an -onion- architecture and layered in six songs which inevitably reference the nature of the site. the parallels between the place and the music are also to be found in search of a sound, which is balanced between field recordings and self production.

after multiple cassette and 12� releases through kastil�s stale in 2016, it�s time for irazu�s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. �shtamm� is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. �refused to be found� is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through �shtamm�. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. �last hours� is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of �shtamm�. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. �torso� is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

a new, twenty-track compilation focussing on a twenty-year period (1950-1970) of modern jazz in the little kingdom, featuring the leading players from that era. due to the absence of its main players during the heydays of modern jazz, belgium will not be remembered for a unique jazz sound or an extensive discography. however, the little country produced a number of highly talented musicians who played lead roles on the international jazz scene. let s get swinging: modern jazz in belgium 1950-1970 retraces their steps and presents some of their finest works, including guitarist philip catherine, saxophonist jack sels, multi-instrumentalist jacques pelzer and vibraphone player, percussionist and vocalist fats sadi lallemand.

steve monite�s album, only you, is a prime slab of nigerian boogie. it�s sinewy, compact and sexy, a little bit of disco mixed with a big dose of funk. loose and groovy, it�s a sonic seduction from another dimension. with legendary producer tony okoroji at the desk, and influential musician and sound engineer, nkono teles, creating magic on the synth, the title track is raw and melodic, dark and sweet at the same time.

next up on aficionado, is something a little bit different�bendith are a collaborative welsh four piece, comprising of carwyn ellis from colorama (who recorded hapus for �nado back in 2012) and elan, marged and gwilym rhys from plu. following the folk-pop vein of bendith�s album released in october 2016, the ep includes 3 brand new tracks and two tracks - �dinas� and �mis mehifin� from the self-titled album.two of the new songs include welsh language adaptations of old classics, �can am gariad� is a version of the lesley duncan tune, �love song�, specially requested by aficionado recordings� moonboots, who obsessively collects versions of this song. �hwiangerdd takeda� is a version of the traditional japanese song, �takeda lullaby� and is inspired by the 1969 rendition by akai tori, the vocal folk group from japan. bookending the ep is �dan glo�, a lovely and mystical music-box demo instrumental. all tracks retain the stunning vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements which have marked out bendith as a unique and very special musical prospect.

sheffields thatmanmonkz is quite the sonic force to be reckoned with. with an impressive discography across the board, dropping his most recent album columbusing on delusions of grandeur in 2016 and running his own successful imprint shadeleaf, were very happy to welcome him to dirt crew and present his latest ep shade throw. kicking things off rough and ready in true detroit �hight tech jazz style,manna for poppa is a saxed up dance floor bomb ready for the taking. intrinsic divine, a sonically soaring breakbeat outing lightens the mood a little, think classic trip hop meets modern deep house. the cinematic string arrangement is accompanied by freestyle piano and licks of ad-libbed sax over a steady kitspace jam 2017 sees thatmanmonkz team up with new york citys clyde phalanx to create a pure psyched up space house outing. we can picture this one over a sun-drenched balearic scenery or deep in a dark and smokey basement somewhere. jazzy freestyle drums underpin a live guitar improvisation that gets truly nasty on this interplanetary journey. slow and sexy is the tempo for the closing track. evolver is a soulful disco burner reminiscent of idjut boys, grooving along with smooth rnb vocals and salacious keys while intoxicating strings lift the energy to pure cosmic goodness.

there�s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, �future bliss� comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track �step one� with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark�s tracks is energized mostly by miller�s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. �future bliss� is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of �1987�, the broken beat of �7 billion = 1�, the synth pop of �the last dance� and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this �future bliss�.

nathan bartell grew up in a little town called ashburn, georgia but soon moved to atlanta georgia where he began to perform in the night clubs. in 1973 he released �top going down, bottom going up� on the soul-po-tion label. bartell remembers: �at the time i was having family problems. my wife didn�t want me and i was deep in love. i felt at that time that i was at the bottom of the pit and i wanted to rise up out of that mess because my wife made me feel that i was a nobody. i was not good enough for her - nobody wants you when you are down and out. she felt that she were on the top and i was on the bottom. this song was a message at that time.� there is nothing for us to add except that we are delighted to bring this little beauty back to new life.
