occasionally jay haze will take some time away from his productions on contexterrior to release music with other labels like leftroom and desolate, or he ll provide a mix for fabric. here, in 2014, jay haze debuts on soul clap - and brings some friends with him. these friends are signor andreoni, an italian producer that s not released a solo record since 2010 (his last was with haze) and the unknown jordy lockruf. -take a dip- is a new-school cut of retrospective italo with those moaning synths perfect for a rimini dancefloor, while the two joints with lockruf provide one clunky, slide guitar twanging disco jam and a shuffling house cut that ever so lightly verges on electro swing - but not too much!

usually found in partnership with blocks on their own narratives imprint, here we find escher flying solo with two beautifully contrasting compositions. deep architecture has already been causing a big stir online due to its wild time signature and off-beat percussive patterns. physically its drum & bass, but mentally its most definitely techno as it pummels with loopy drum insistency. spirit bounce, meanwhile, is a stark and breezy stepper that oozes space and shimmers with emotive synths. its a simple but soulful synthesis many have attempted over the year but only few have mastered... klute, marcus intalex and now escher, too. the return of 31 has been one of d&bs best stories so far this year.

portlandia house bastion ecstasy termed temples 2012 debut mini-lp, i-vii, ambient jack, which captures something of the projects contradictory strengths: airy yet agile, sparse but plush, flights of intuition mapped onto morphing grids of percussion, crystalline electronics, and pastel skylines. avalon kalins latest collection of tech finery, earrings ii, dials back the atmospheric quotient somewhat, though theres still a rock garden spaciousness to his mixes, each element arranged with regard to some higher harmony, the poetry of negative space. recorded in his home studio while dancing, the four tracks here ebb between passages of pressure and release, euphoric but unstable, dusted with pyramid-chamber slap back and live dubbing acrobatics. their melting clock asymmetries more closely echo kalins hardware improvisations with scott goodwin as polonaise than the velvet vocal house of his other solo vessel, finesse, but temples is ultimately a holy place all its own. a sleekly compelling statement from one of the pacific northwests secret heroes. mastered by eric hanson. edition of 305

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

itokim, aka tendo-based producer takuro ito, aligns with dj bone s subject detroit label with the subject japan: rhythm poems ep and his opening gambit certainly leaves a dent. -motechnique- has been a staple of bone s 3 deck attacks in recent months and it will have eyebrows raised and mouths open from the off. weighty but warm kicks start as they mean to go on, bursting with pace and vigour as thrusts and stabs pinprick the brooding chords. the laidback, easy-going connotations of the title to -roll up and shine- are very much the ethos and aesthetic of the production, as a playful, bubbling melody sets a warm and almost sugary tone from the off before being bolstered by a suave melange of full-bodied kick and dexterous percussion. itokim rounds off his first outing on subject detroit with -the mood device-, a to the point groover that melds elements of the previous productions to stunning effect. a genuine builder of a track with a straight and true trajectory, -the mood device- melds innumerable coatings of percussion and synth as stabs are layered and layered again, clotting and coagulating the composition in to one delightfully deep and multidimensional slice of formidable dancefloor composite.

to rack & ruin comes thundering your way slap bang in time for summer courtesy of our italian disco brother in arms dj rocca and his compardre n2b. the usual high standard of sounds are as present as ever on the 6th instalment of our edits and reworks imprint. get up hits you with a rolling bassline that brims with plenty of pant flapping groove & wah wah guitar licks before that ever so familiar vocal kicks in for a full on reggae disco workout. weird safari certainly lives up to its name - a stripped back, dark & almost techno sound, alongside tinkering percussion and spaced out wild animal noises surely make for a weird safari. dubby pino has you from the off, all the foot stamping & money shaking elements are present - hooky guitar, fat bass loop, infectious percussion, soulful vocal licks and a gorgeous little piano break. mr rossi’s backpain starts off by getting the award for the best song title we’ve ever had on rack & ruin, but as well as that it’s in the proper groovy dance floor tackle category with a bassline & guitar that commands your respect and then when the 4/4 kicks in at 1 min, well just have a listen.

dj dag is undoubtedly ranked as one of the german dj legends and just celebrated his 29th dj anniversary. arisen from the early frankfurt techno scene and well known due to his residencies at dorian gray, omen or u60311 and his consistently gigs at space ibiza. alongside his studio partner matthew kramer we are welcoming dj dag to the weplay label! with *follow me* these guys really flashing your ears and mind: 2k14-sound but still with an old-school vibe, hypnotic and dreamy but still driving atmosphere – an extraordinary mixture only dag and matthew can do!

for our second release on wavereform, we continue our explorations into sophisticated sounds from mostly-unexplored areas with the production debut from juras lietus, a 25 year-old latvian producer from riga whose mysterious origins in this out-of-the-way locale may surprise listeners, but whose sound fits very well into the label’s mission to reform the sound sphere with simple and elegant tracks that demand attention and bring unknown talent deserved notice. lietus wastes no time in showing off his developed dub techno style on >dark frank< as the bold, well-defined contours of the bottom end are contrasted with gentler ambient textures in the opening, it acquires more force as it moves along as he adds harder percussion patterns to the framework while the dense atmospherics progress barely in the background. >direct< is the more subtle and atmospheric of the pair, as crisp, delicate drums develop slowly while also suggesting melody. it too gains strength as it goes though, with ricocheting percussion and a barely-controlled feedback wail leading into a dramatic breakdown before he slowly winds things down in the detail-rich final section. j&#363,,,,,,,ras lietus and latvian techno may be mostly unknown, but this strong showing for wavereform 002 reveals much still to be uncovered in these eastern lands.

snuff trax celebrates magic record release number 010: happy jackin birthday! for this little anniversary we asked four great artists to rework chosen tracks from the labels back catalogue. leading us off, mr white (you know him from his collaboration with larry heard) made an edit of snuff crews *are you house*. followed by humandrone from tokyo remixing perseus traxx - *dont feel alone*. on the flipside you hear a remix treatment for raiders of the lost arp - *stealing my love* made by our man takeshi kouzuki of kobe/japan. and last but not least dimdj from thessaloniki created his own version of *galaxian journey* by elec pt.1.

*gussie presenting the right tracks* - the original 70s classic collection with 11 selected tracks on wax. a true parade of jamaican greats horace andy, dennis brown, gregory isaacs, augustus pablo, leroy smart etc. - the next decade gussie clarke went truly outernational with global hits galore but these are the crucial cuts that paved the way!

listening to the sound of konfetti klub ensemble creates associations of those sparkling drops that run down the side of an ice cold drink on hot summer days. it’s a very refreshing and delicious listening experience, it’s both stimulating and soothing. if you think the formula brass players + club groove is somewhat worn-out, you will be pleasantly surprised. pomelo comes with bouncy offbeat rhythms, and when the trombone hits in there’s clearly an air of balkan sound. however, around the middle of the track it turns into a joyful freestyle session. mollono.bass puts a bit more emphasis on beats, bass and pressure in his version, in other words: even a bit more emphasis on the dance floor. rotwein und sommerverbot gives a groovy hint why konfetti klub ensemble describe their sound as live brass house – it’s extremely jazzy and casual, a live session rather than a programmed arrangement. even more so schwankel, as it vibrates effortlessly between intricate musical deepness and sheer to-the-floor euphoria. last but not least there is a track exclusively for the digital release: stranddub – beach dub. let’s put it like that: there’s a damn good party happing at this beach.

this is for those with hard heads, black lungs, and scarred hearts. it is for the dreamers who construct darts on loose-leaf and those revolting against corporate life and casual fridays. it is castles return of the gasface, released on mello music group, remixed by has-lo with a new track and revamped verses. the new record tilts at a different angle, but the beats still bludgeon without sacrificing soul. the raps are rugged yet introspective. the north carolina natives voice is grizzled and shot through with the fatigue that comes from late nights, cigarettes and coffee. has-los beats coax a deeper melancholy out of castles hymns.

b.riddim is luis sequeira, a portuguese living in london. magic my ear is his second ep for third ear, following the (in) theory ep in 2012. formerly a driving force in the influential portuguese rap group g-ward under the name bellatur, luis followed his love of jamaican dub using electronics to arrive at a sound which is identifiable through the sum of its parts but which is quite unique.

italian techy sounds at their best. danilo vigorito knows how to balance out his sound on this splendid 12. chordy but rolling techno patterns and atmospheric topsounds. this is hard to place in a box which makes it extra fun. where dark star is a somewhat mysterious and ethnic sounding opener the remaining two tracks are chordy techno at its best. danilo vigorito knows how to deliver.

this 5th release consists of three tracks made by the twin duo manic brothers, one edited by petter b. they have during their relativity short career proven themselves as worthy keepers of the swedish techno heritage with big releases on drumcode a.o. what they bring to bond on this release is their signature big room sound but with a much more simplified approach than previously heard. on the a-side there are two great tool tracks with lots of space for creative interpretation for a dj. on the flip there are a long and epic track with a massive vocal breakdown. groove based but yet with a big and strong hook.

a less than prolific, but very highly regarded outlet comes into the all ears fold for their fourth outing this time around a friendly trio unites for the production work. mancunian chum haners puts some deep body and soul into things and grabs the spotlight on the a, and there aint no denying it is well deserved.

well, well, well! our teutonic chums come through once again with the secret selections you vinyl-junkies love to love! house master boyz get ripped up, but this aint chicago and it aint 1986! that classic acid house refrain gets welded onto some distinctly brand new / retro sonics, an acid laced behemoth that is equal parts new beat and strobe-lit proto house. timeless & powerful floor food, and as such, equally at home in some erol alkan piloted stadium as it is in a stinky basement. a quick flip and the jj jam swaps the faithful homage we found next door for a futuristic steppers workout. roughly hewn stabs underpinned by some rib cage rattling low end registers

the shag edits hits volume 4 welcoming david glass, timmy p and twos tones to the roots for bloom roster. david brings a big hitter with tape deck with its mc sampled vocal, timmy s is drenched in sunshine for all the day parties this is sure to go off at and two s tones takes things on a jazz twist, with clever sampling but always that underlying groove that the roots for bloom label is known for. fans of the previous releases wont be dissapointed.

as our true fans know, every now and then we leave our comfort zone to bring something else than techno. this season, we gave dib from italy the honor to be the unusual one. three tracks, three times basic, stripped down house that does well as a tool or a track in the early or deep hours of the night. or just for those people working hard at the office and wanting some deep house during their officework. all tracks have a very old skool vibe to it and breathe true deep house: not the filtered down vocal kind, but the breed that just lets a 909, 808 shine and some rhodes or warm analogue synths do the work. the first one is rather detroitish - with a nice acid stab and some strings setting the mood, the second one is more dance floor oriented and the third version is a bit of both. does it need to be said that dimitri andreas mastered it again? and that it is available on vinyl?

ah the humble double pack, isnt there something so very satisfying about this format? sccucci manucci evidently thinks so as the nine bows ep is the labels second release in succession to embrace the double pack. it s another high profile cast that contribute to the eight tracks here, with montel, mikki funk, jackson ryland and aashton all featuring. it is the latter, brighton-based producer who opens proceedings with *i cant shake it*, a summer house anthem in the making that showcases his love of a classic rnb vocal. maverick follows with *wait for u* which is not only his sccucci debut but also the parisian s first production committed to wax - hard to believe! the mood swings through various shades of house from here with *lemme hold u* from montel a mid point highlight thanks to a killer vocal hook.

huge re issue from steve poindexters back catalogue from 1991. all 6 tracks are fully remastered for 2014 and rereleased in original artwork. released in conjunction with steve poindexter / chicago underground. discogs prices are $100+++ but they wont sound as good as this and all pressing faults from original copies have been corrected.

deepblaks left, and right arm aybee along with afrikan sciences offer up an homage to one of the greatest musical innovators of the 20th century, in miles davis. sketches of space is comprised of live jam sessions recorded over a 3 year span, and two countries . the project though named after miles classic sketches of spain is not dedicated to any of miless work specifically, but honoring his pioneering spirit from which this project drew fuel.

“inverso” is the new vinyl sub-label of kript records, whose concept is based on the meaning that the word assumes in different fields, in mathematics for example the “inverso” ratio means that the product of the variables always remain constant. but the word “inverso” is also a concept that leads to an exact opposite of what it assumes. these two meanings of the word “inverso” inspire all the tracks of the label, characterized by a -noisy and distorted- sound, where symmetry and asymmetry live together and where analog source and analog processing give a great touch of depth.

medical records presents two of the most striking and iconic reissues in its catalog. the lp though 2 years after since the accident continues to carry the torch illustrating the evolving transition between experimental structure and loops into the catchy pop hooks that would later define such releases as rotund for success. this lp seems to move slightly into darker territory in general with its synth textures and slower tempo tracks but overall has a nice continuation feel from since the accident yet with obvious technological evolutions.

totally fresh 4 track 12 by ethiopian born and based artist mikael seifu - bluntly put under the house tag here, but in fact a melting pot of styles is coming together on this beauty. limited pressing. born and raised in addis ababa, seifu attended the french school lycee guebre-mariam as a child, and went on to study music production at ramapo college of new jersey. mikael seifu is an electronic music producer & performer from ethiopia. seifus music is a fusion of ethiopian folk, uk garage & his own dream brew, which he calls ethiopian electronic. his debut ep, yarada lij, draws from a long list of musical influences including endeguena mulu, ben neill, burial, zion rebels, and r.f. 1432 r is an independent record label based in washington dc.

at its very first start, the new label founded by conrad van orton proposes a vinyl of his own with two original tracks on the a side, november and captivity archives. and two great remixers such as vsk and the mysterious annuled user on the other. just as the needle starts to mark the passage, the classic four quarters give life to a beat that between one step and another compresses catapulting reality in a classic industrial scenario of mid-autumn where the clear sky gets marked by black and deep plots. a background noise accompanies the whole programming part of the drumming that gives off a relentless pace. on the a side captivity archives reconfirms the industrial nature of cvo with a look towards distant galaxies ..... with the needle still hot we turn around the record to the b side. here we find the vsk remix with a more ambient and crystal clear sound. to the original drum, vsk, choose an equally technical percussion. all home made. last but not least the contribution given by annulled user. trademark? techno! .. and there is nothing here to mess about with. 4/4 dry, hard which feel anger and rebellion desire. the kick, fairly present, is ripped apart by some demonic filters. the 5.30 min of annulled user are a reminiscence of the 90s.

love or hate his infamous twitter beefs there is no denying the legendary status of this house music vanguard. with 20+ years of djing and producing under his belt, this is dj sneak s first release on exploited: a collaboration with murk (oscar g and ralph falcon). back in 2003 murk released dark beat - a track that topped the billboard dance charts and became the underground smash of the year. a few months ago we asked sneak for a remix by mail but we didn t get a reply. after 4 months he suddenly popped up in our mailbox, apologized and said that he finally had some studio time. in the end he sent through some tracks to see if we like them. the rest is history as you re probably listening to one of the tracks right now. this quirky and funky house track (a 10 minute journey) is only the tip of the ice berg though.

*follow your heart* is the new single from holly johnson, taken from his first album in 15 years. to be released on limited coloured vinyl 12 inch and download only, the vinyl includes an extended version of the original and the frankie knuckles & eric kupper directors cut remix. the album will be released in september and is followed by his first uk tour since the late 80s. more singles will be released, but this is your first taste of the new music.
