brazilian producer bungle returns to thirtyone records with his sophomore ep for the renowned british outlet for all things drum & bass. doc scott curates the label closely and has selected four bungle cuts that all have that same prolific vibe to them.
“cocooned ep” opens up with the sublime and dark title song. “cocooned” revolves around a savvy bass cut and bungle’s signature big drums. “distance” is a special piece with a gigantic pad at the centre of the song. the big and jazzy hats are compilmenting the rhythm nicely while splashes of fx are cleverly being used throughout.

j:kenzo heads back to 31 records with two new tracks from his arsenal. “sykura” encaptures the vibe of ’97 / ’98 drum and bass with its soundscapes and twisted analog synths, whereas “assemble” keeps the traditional 2 step rolling style with energy throughout.

limited vinyl double pack pressed on transparent green & blue vinyl. four tracks, the brand new vip mix of species and the doc scott inspired track redeemer, along side blood red and the original mix of species. serum said of these tracks, they are inspired by the original virus releases. i wanted to make something with a harder edge and modern production but without losing the grit or the groove. i sampled a lot of experimental electronic music from the 60s and 70s and used vintage style hardware to bring out the right character in the sounds.

hidden turn first came to the attention of doc scott & 31 recordings with the track “big dirty”. scott had been playing it on his future beats radio show and contacted him about releasing it on his 31 label. that first release made quite a splash across the dnb world and beyond and was described by the label as “kinda dnb, kinda not, but we like it”. hidden turn returns in 2016 with his and the labels, debut artist album “the ride”.

om unit says of this release “for me it’s another milestone as a dnb fan.. being allowed to come back to 31 again with another “shadow boxing” version, being one of only a tiny handful of people being allowed to remix this classic truly is an honour, let alone twice! also working with thing on “something ancient” was a real blessing not only because he s original and convincing with his own work but also i think he’s like me, he does his own thing without adhering to too many of the insular rules that have made dnb such a closed room over the years, and so creating this cinematic piece just happened naturally and i really love the results.”

moresounds has left the training camp and is now at the controls of his own craft. a dub fanatic, he stays true to the techniques of king tubby, and from behind his desk sends dancefloors crazy with pinches of hip-hop and jungle in his authentic and energetic live show. this approach caught the attention of om units cosmic bridge label in 2012 before his debut ep on astrophonica in 2013. since then his music has appeared on doc scotts 31 recordings and has added trademark cosmic dub seasoning to machinedrums vapor city project. an impressive start to his career, echoed in fact magazines inclusion of the producer as one to watch in 2015.

andre sobota - or, as you probably know him better, brazilian drum and bass star bungle - delivers an extraordinary ep following on from his input to the 31 recordings future beats album last year. bungle has been at the forefront of the drum & bass scene for almost 10 years now, with timeless releases such as astral travel on soul:r, has also had contributions to other labels including critical music, cia & hospital records.

vromm is a new music project created by alvaro martinez, with the aim to spread uk bass and beats culture that has influenced him since the late 80s. based in london with 20+ years experience in the music industry. this new project is supported by doc scott with the first ep released through 31. vromm is also one of the members of various production and hardware and also co-runs various recordings.

usually found in partnership with blocks on their own narratives imprint, here we find escher flying solo with two beautifully contrasting compositions. deep architecture has already been causing a big stir online due to its wild time signature and off-beat percussive patterns. physically its drum & bass, but mentally its most definitely techno as it pummels with loopy drum insistency. spirit bounce, meanwhile, is a stark and breezy stepper that oozes space and shimmers with emotive synths. its a simple but soulful synthesis many have attempted over the year but only few have mastered... klute, marcus intalex and now escher, too. the return of 31 has been one of d&bs best stories so far this year.

doc scott was on the decks. it was at tribal gathering (i think), 1996, standing in front of a wall of speakers to one side of the stage, enjoying myself, like you do, when this sound started growing inside my brain. my head was then ripped clean off my shoulders! words are still hard to find! it was the first time i ever heard shadow boxing and its the only thing i still remember from that night. om units 2014 remix is paired with the 1996 original.
