started out as a reggae, lovers rock band in the late 70’s, the cool notes consolidated their reputation in the 80s, after turning towards more soulful sounds and have signed different hits, all finished straight into the upper parts of the charts. “i wanna dance” and “blown it” released for the sour grape label owned by patrick mulpeter and danny ryan, both former member of the band gold, are two gems inexplicably left in the shadows, but as often happens, later appreciated as essential spins, in the selection of champion djs.
carlton doom has existed only in the shadows of a 27 year old’s delphian consciousness, until now. necrodancer ep emerges as deep sea frequency’s fourth and most audacious offering, a four track package of mutated breaks and scuzzy electro due 5th october 2018. charged forward by a riotous bass line, the title track brings together crystalline high end amidst dizzying drums. ‘pipepipepipe’ is a maximal dose of big room energy followed by ‘bad batch’, a messed up trip of broken beats and swollen bass. closing off the ep, choppy breaks take the lead on ‘rot’.
2lp , full sleeve, as always with hell yeah, the next release comes from an artist label boss marco fell utterly in love with before forming a close musical relationship. his name is calm, and this summer he releases his eighth studio album, by your side. it is an effortlessly evocative long player and magical ten track trip into soothing sonic waters, glistening harmonies and horizontal rhythms. calm is legendary japanese artist fukagawa kiyotaka, someone who has been making deep house, ambient and downtempo grooves since the late nighties, and always teasing spine tingling emotions out of his machines. his last album—2015 s from my window—cast a real spell on marco and encouraged him to reach out. the pair eventually hooked up in tokyo and found real musical kinship while playing records together.
