the fourth release on trevor jacksons pre- label is by skull. a visceral journey into experimental noise and no wave avant grade beatscapes the last skull release snapz appeared on jacksons own output recordings label in 1999. a seminal collection of tracks that had previously featured on the first two legendary mo wax headz compilations (also featuring autechre, beastie boys, air, and dj shadow) as well as tracks that had also appeared on kevin the bug martins notorious macro dub infection albums during the mid 90s. reactionary sonic statements aimed at the coffee table world of trip hop, fuelled by his dissatisfaction and dissillustionment with hip hop of the time, trevor pushed himself into uncomfortable and far more extreme areas than he had before, areas he felt unable to explore with his underdog productions, which were mainly being utilised for major label remixes at the time. influenced as much by the industrial pioneers, post punk and new wave of the past as the burgeoning post rock scene in the mid 90s, this new set of previously unreleased recordings originally produced between 1996-2000 are equally as intense and visceral as the early releases. dusty samples, raw beats, tape loops, and primitive effects combine to sound as relevant now as when they were initially created.

monotonix are a punk trio from tel aviv. they formed in november 2005, set up on the floor of the club with the audience, and the party began. but the party usually got too wild, the power got cut, the cops were called and monotonix were banned from playing again almost everywhere. before long, they were looking for good places to play outside of israel - and they were delighted to find that there are more rock and roll party places outside of israel than inside! today, monotonix are the hardest working rock band in the world. sure, lots of other bands work up a sweat, but monontonix are definitely the only band who puts in the kind of miles they do, and they rock rings around pretty much the rest of us too. these guys do two different shows in two different towns on the same day whenever they can manage it. but thats only the tip of the hard working iceberg. body language sounds almost like a monotonix show. the only thing you cant hear is the sound of your heart beating in your ears after having been chased around the room by a vocalist with his pants literally on fire, then getting dousedwith beer and dancing your ass off to the guitar riffage, then ending it all by carrying the drummer around on your shoulders while a few other guys hold his kit up so he can keep drumming. you dont end up quite as out of breath when listening body language, but you do get a ton of excitement anyway, courtesy of a killer guitar sound, precision power drumming and lusty lead vocals. they recorded body language with tim green (of the fucking champs) at louder studios in san francisco. it twists and grooves with all the fun and fervor of great rock and roll.

songs from the source is a lost and found 1973 recording of the source family. these twelve songs were recorded live in the hollywood hills as a rehearsal for a concert date that spirit of 76 - aka yahowah 13, the savage sons of yahowa, yodship, and firewaterair, now known as children of the sixth root race - had at the whisky. a 1/4 tape copy of the recording was found in chicago in 2006, though no one is really sure how it got there. djin aquarian, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for spirit of 76, recalls being sent on a mission to chicago later in 1973, where he believes he left the tape with an old friend. djin wrote most of the songs in the year before he joined with the source, as part of his solo mystical quest to help enlighten the world before it might annihilate itself, adding, im glad both the album and the world are still here.though this rehearsal wasnt meant to be released at the time, there are probably no other recordings as complete of the band doing these songs. the spirit of 76 had a different sound than the one yahowah 13 made with yahowa. songs from the source has more r n b grooved energy, with splashes of synth and organ, a female vocal chorus and streamlined fusion rhythms backing the uniquely yahowan lyrical populism of songs like godmen and lost dead but hoping. songs from the source is a miraculous missing piece of the sources positive musical movement. the members of yahowah 13 (djin, sunflower on bass, octavius on drums) were joined by family members ahom, aquariana, cinderella, rhythm, vibration, and zoroaster on lead guitar, to create the ecstatic sound of spirit of 76.

the royal we are six young dreamers who came together in early 2006, under inevitable glasgow rain to plot and do stuff and hang out in cafes as if in a godard movie. things still seemed to coincide and very quickly they had a bunch of pop songs, albeit an older, odder kind of pop reminiscent of the experimental pop of orange juice or esg or even the raincoats. the band signed to domino records imprint label geographic and are due to release their stunning debut self titled album soon. this is preceded by a special 7inch single, the fantastic all the rage. the track encapsulates their staggered swagger perfectly, glam on the cheap, sassy and fun the perfect pop moment.

new chain is the debut long-player from new york s small black. richly coloured and thickly layered, it is an absorbing, eclectic and obsessive body of work. the brooklyn group have succeeded in melting together locked and popped drum-shudder, gauzy spirographic synths and subtly contagious, half-remembered melody into ebullient bursts of evocative, subliminal and thoroughly modern pop. the songs are equally informed by the rhythmic bounce and stylistic swagger of more left-leaning contemporary radio rap and r n b as it is the submerged kaleidoscopic swirl of the early 4ad dream factory.

die nullerjahre des 21. jahrhunderts verbrachte er nach eigenen angaben in einem selbst gew?hlten exil als >would-be folksinger<. lloyd cole, zusammen mit den commotions oder eben solo seit mitte der 80er-jahre eine feste gr®?e im internationalen popzirkus, sehnte sich nach dem spiel mit der band, nach ein wenig rock n roll. die songs dazu hatte er bereits, das geld dazu besorgte er sich von den fans: circa 1000 von ihnen waren bereit, 45 dollar f?r eine de-luxe-version eines albums zu ?berweisen, das von eben diesem geld erst noch eingespielt werden musste. cole rekrutierte eine studioband aus alten und neuen bekannten, u. a. joan wasser alias joan as police woman sowie mark schwaber und matt cullen von coles begleittrio the small ensemble. das ergebnis nennt sich >broken record< und ist das frischste und lebendigste klangerzeugnis, das von lloyd cole seit jahren zu h®ren war. man merkt dem album an, wie gut cole das zusammenspiel mit der band tut, die songs sind auf gewohnt hohem niveau. aus dem would-be folksinger wurde wieder der s?nger einer rock-n-roll-band.
