repress - coeo are to toy tonics records, what master at work were to the house scene of the 1990ies: they bring the soul into the house. their new ep back in the days is a 4 track house stomper that could have been made in 1997 by guys like sneak, dimitri from paris or little louie. but still the similarities to the new berlin sample-house scene around max graef and hodini are evident, too. already their last years superhit native riddim (which is featured as a bonus track on this vinyl) included some heavy jazz samples they found in their parents bag of soul. native riddim has been no.1 in the traxsource charts for several weeks and was the basis for their already huge following. from laurent garnier to tensnake - the feedback has been awesome. now they proceed their way of souldful house. just good taste.

a yawning desert covers and oppresses a distant daemon-sphere pregnant with the stuff of a thousand earths. clouds of the same hue and attitude as the infinite sands gradually dominate the sky, possessed of a malign intelligence. a trans-generational caravan cuts an unforgiving line through the dunes in a fruitless mission to close its great mad circle, forever missing by just miles. it is a roving, innumerable harem in liege to an unsexed tyrant who sings them this song, reproduced here by resonant hole emissaries jeanne vomit-terror and ed sunspot, as the caravan commits the abominable act of transgressing the horizon into the infant sky-desert “above.” carl calm’s “gulf of night” mix is a monster, as is the great mike simonetti’s perverse interpretation!

repress - one of the defining releases on large music gets a special re-issue after a 16 year wait. considered by many to be one of the top 3 packages in the early large catalog, this ep set the trajectory for what would quickly become known as the west coast sound of american house. the main vocal on side a also became a venerable classic at the shelter in nyc and was played consistently by timmy regisford throughout his tenure there. the darker, more disco filtered tones on the flip side were also highly praised and played at the time by french djs such as daft punk, phil weeks, cassius and many others. rasoul is often overlooked as one of the chief architects of modern deep house, yet this release certainly secures his elite standing in the annals of house music history. essential!
