a past affiliate of richie hawtin’s minus label, berlin-based expat kevin mchugh (aka ambivalent) joins the ranks at cpu under his more recent alter ego of la-4a. mchugh launched his own delft imprint in 2013, which saw the birth of la-4a, initially an anonymous production handle. on slackline, mchugh delivers 4 tracks of uncompromising techno: you’ll find interwoven breaks and refined sampling, and as the track entitled punishment clearly suggests, only the hardiest of techno fans will survive it’s onslaught.

rekids founder radio slave readies a colossal double a-side titled ‘overdue’ this june. “‘the revenge’ is my homage to clubs like “rage- and my days growing up in london-, says matt edwards. “the reverse’ came from some late night studio sessions in february and i’ve had a lot of fun playing this out. all i can say is it’s very me - stripped back and made for the dance floor”. urban field recordings and a spoken word sample set the tone in ‘revenge’ before an onslaught of breaks erupt into a frenzy, the overall aesthetic borrows upon numerous uk rave hallmarks whilst sounding fresh and impeccably geared for modern dj use. meanwhile, ‘reverse’ is a quintessential radio slave record with its polished production, repetitive minimalism and atmospheric aura – rounding off a two-tracker expertly produced with the dancefloor in mind.

coming off of ep releases on dynamic reflection and 100% pure, uun returns to his label ego death for it’s third release, and it’s first on vinyl. the title track references carl sagan’s classic work of skepticism demon haunted world. it features a percussive attack that builds into a swirling tornado of distorted synths and hihats. the scarlet martyr takes a different approach that is heavy on pads and atmospheric elements all over a bed of field recordings. the b side starts with nx1’s remix of the title track. this interpretation chops up the synth and percussive elements into a broken beat onslaught that builds into the track being deconstructed piece by piece. the final track dominions continues in the broken beat direction with a more straightforward dancefloor approach

with jealous god, eerie and l.i.e.s on his c.v. they don t come much more approved that domenico crisci, but few would be prepared for the onslaught that leaps out of this first release on summa cum laude. the violinist champions distortion as a weapon, running everything through a fuzz pedal in a most unrelenting of fashions. its certainly not for the feint-hearted, and all the more powerful with it. meanwhile return would sound brutal in any other context were it not for what came before, all slamming, grubby drums and the noises that splay off them. blacklord them manages to push the vibe further back into the red with a searing throwdown to finish the ep off in a masterful display of intensity.

jack cutter is a songwriter and guitarist based in the san francisco bay area in california. he started with a $5 banjo just after finishing high school. in university, during the late 60’s, he performed with bar bands in buffalo, new york. after completing university and a year as an aerospace engineer, he decided that attack helicopters were not really what the world needed and so he headed off to california in pursuit of music and mystic times. fast forward to fall 2014: jack is playing his quintessential tune, ‘gift of our fathers’ in the sf bart subway to an onslaught of morning commuters when he was spotted by 40 thieves. eureka! love at first sight and in the next few months, two of jack’s original acoustic pieces were given the 40 thieves treatment. enter david sanderson aka david harks, a singer, songwriter, producer and label curator from the east sussex region of the uk. ‘having fallen in love with the cosmic boogie (of 40 thieves classic ‘backward love’) i really felt i would love nothing more than to write a tune with them. layne got back in touch with a track he was working on entitled serpent strut with jack cutter and we worked via email over a few months to brew up that misty soul.’ deep, stony, psychedelic, drawing from the well of hawkwind, joni mitchell, david crosby, baffo banfi and tolkien-tinged acoustic led zep, the proof of concept is now complete and in the capable and loving hands of claremont 56.

for the second part, frankfurts losoul (playhouse,logistic) takes the downbeat dub-techno-jazz of renatos underpool and turns it into an anthemic deep house number thats 12 minutes long and 20.000 leagues under the sea, yet full of bounce. finally, berlin-based brit ed davenport (counterchange) takes anymore and gives it an entirely different edge, a naval onslaught of crashing, jacking breakbeats, while sonar frequencies gently circle outward like the sirens call, rounding out the funkoholic remixes voyage.

full pupp takes us on a trip to the darkest side of disco with 3 suspenseful takes on the lionheart brothers >the drift<. frisvold & lindbaek dont waste much time lull you in with gentle introductions but pull you right into their deepest lair where swathes of billowing, ghostly sounds and warped strings are sliced trough by gyrating rock guitars and echoing vocals truly messing with sense of reality and orientation. a psychedelic onslaught of stoner rock, italian horror soundtrack and progressive electronics which in the morten oby & prins thomas version obtains its dizzying intensity from stacking said components tightly to a towering, dense sound of wall while prins thomas diskomiks on the flip takes it sweet time of pleasurably adding up the spine tingling aural ingredients over a straighter beat, slowly tightening the screw during to course of 12 gloriously spooky minutes.

i know u combines tribal rhythms, pounding bass, insistent synth stabs, some distressed dialogue and a insanely large crash in the most maniacal way imaginable for what has to be one of the most devastating and original tunes for a very long time. sparse and spacious but yet rhythmical and energetic, lxc manages the ultimate arrangement balancing act here. the intensity increases gradually as the track progresses, culminating in an all-out tribal war ! a modern day jungle masterpiece from one of the most under-estimated producers around. on the flip, senses finally unleashes a track that decimated the very first technicality all-nighter back in 2004. 8 years later and that power is still very much in evidence! everybody want go heaven. nobody want dead – taking influence from the 1990 film marked for death, senses builds a dense vibe here, thick with imminent danger. rolling drums soon give way to a energetic ride-heavy break and pounding sub-bass hits. drum rolls drop and mentasms screech before the storm begins to subside half way through. the respite is brief however and after a complete silence the track reassembles, beginning with some insane slow to fast mentasm pitching which continues as a dark, slick reece begins to build with mysterious atmospherics. the tension is cut by the return of the drums – rolling along at first, before the mentasms and subs hit hard again, signaling a percussive onslaught! jungle just got catapulted into 2012.
