the latest offering from us-based imprint secret studio records will arrive courtesy of circling vultures, a project fronted by chicago natives justin long (hugo ball), and ken zawacki (dar embarks). circling vultures’ sound is rooted in the hedonistic midwestern rave scene of the ’90s, formed over a long history traversing the hedonistic spaces of that time—it’s a hardware-driven sound with a diy punk ethos.

piano day is an official body created in 2015 by berlin-based composer nils frahm and his closest friends to house various exciting, piano-related projects for everyone to participate in.
the first project revealed by the piano day team in 2015 was the building of what will be the world’s tallest piano: the klavins 450, designed by piano builder david klavins who also created nils’s upright stage piano, the una corda. with over 70 per cent of the 120.000 euro target reached, the piano building is already underway and fans can continue to donate via www.pianoday.org.
it was on the 3.7 meters high klavins m370 that nils recorded eight improvised piano motifs in one sitting, which formed his 2015 album, solo.

seth troxler’s play it say it label opens up 2018 with another release from the highly regarded ataxia, who serve up their third ep for the imprint. the detroit duo impressed with their previous outings on the label, the supertouch ep back in july 2017 and the acid ep in 2016. since then they have also released on leftroom and nervous and continued their eight year residency at prominent detroit venue tv lounge. their fresh take on motor city techno often comes with flashes of acid and makes cyber punks ted krisko and eric ricker one of the most interesting pairs in the game. opening up the essential ep is ‘quicksand’, an immediately arresting and busy electro track with real machine soul. the bassline bubbles and boils underneath crisp percussion and emotive keys bring a sense of tenderness. it’s a macho cut with robust drums and is sure to win over any crowd. the fresh ‘hot snakes’ is a deep, menacing track with dark bass gurgling beneath the airy hi hats. frazzled synths are dystopian and brain frying, and together the whole thing takes you into hypnotic territory with an intense sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore. last of all is the freakiest of the lot. the brilliant ‘texas is the reason’ has circling bass that is warped and intriguing and will own any club, while the drums drive on and trippy keys are skewed and twisted up top. it’s a truly intense record for late in the night that is sure to become a big tune. this is an expressive and varied ep full of contemporary and innovative detroit house and techno sounds and marks another step in the ataxia story.

r.o.s.h. returns with two anthemic uk-leaning 4/4 productions. following last year’s debut release on bristol’s drumz for eternity label, herts based r.o.s.h. broadens his release schedule via two tracks that establish a common thread of unique top end melodies coupled with swinging, uk funky indebted percussion and pure peak time atmospherics. ‘winona’s love (stranger things mix)’ launches with an audacious mixture of circling john carpenter synths and rolling ’09 era uk funky percussion coming across as one part london legend apple to two parts prime eighties repo man. honed berlin kick drums and low swung bass hits combine to create a constantly driving concoction of ceiling banging techno all tied together with the distinctive infectious synth work that’s fast becoming a r.o.s.h. staple. creating a fully fledged dance floor homage to netflix s most popular sleep competitor is the young producer’s raison d’etre across this release. ‘amg (a45 mix)’ goes in for the kill with rattling percussive stabs and tweaked woodblock snares winding up the drama before the rumbling techno breakout at the one minute mark. it s a return to the rude form of uk funky s heyday, with colossal amounts of sub and every element driven to a singular purpose, to move bodies in the dance.

the brooklyn sessions bring together old and new pinkman friends. annanan returns, this time with maroje t, for three pieces of ny darkness. acid tainted torment opens the 12inch, pain and rejection catalogued in the barren confrontations in terms of sexuality. i saw you maintains that cold edge. militaristic percussion is dipped in industrial grease, lost samples circling in a haze of distortion. the pair explore reduction with tracks being boiled down to leave only distilled dread behind. the breathy vocals of i am close, drum patterns looped into machine groan and the aching abyss.

the second release from mic comes from ladies as pimps - laps for short - is an anarchic glasgow duo formed by lady two collars of golden teacher and sue zuki from organs of love. their duets take centre stage on who me?: the vocal performances range from the stretched, soulful projections of ode to daughter to the lawless, clipped, sweet &, sour, spat-not- spoken word of edges. spirited percussion scatters in all directions and bass is smothered in tape delay, as the four tracks beat through dub, rnb, house, and way beyond, circling around acts like madame x, the bug, stuart argabright, francois k, mashing absurdity with dread. recorded at green door studios in glasgow (where the two met) and layered with the analogue production techniques learned on the first youth unemployment programme there, the energy and charisma of these recordings promise a pretty unique live show when they support princess nokia later this year. supported by ben ufo, dj moxie, pariah, optimo, nts, vinyl

after releases from the likes of dakini9, fox and franklin da costa, it was only natural that jersey city-based label green village would turn to dj spider for a new 12 inch. well, it seems natural to us, in any case. the nyc artist is now a respected member of the big apple s contemporary house and techno wave, and it s an absolute must for him to be represented on the city s bubbling scene, especially when he s up for firing off tunes like space jungle and satsang, two mean, clubminded house bangers with a prominent lower-end. divide & conquer turns things darker and more ominous thanks to its icy, minimal approach a cold blend of stripped-back beats and circling bass tones while urantia of nebadon displaces the traditional house framework in favour of a dark, molecular selection of electronic sounds guided by a simple pattern of 4/4 beats. classic spider material

fresh off of a pair of well-received eps on his recently-launched manhigh imprint, berlins highly respected techno auteur henning baer makes his first appearance on nonplus with 4 excellently crafted, saturated machine techno tracks on the idea of instinct. following on feelings suggested in the title, the ep opens with a pair of more contemplative pieces: the title track’s spare arrangement puts mechanical rhythmic drive behind its exploration of dusky electronic atmospheres, while the feeling of dna is both brighter and slightly pacier, its hypnosis deriving from the pads and synthesizer sequences that circle the drums. ccc ii takes a darker approach to a similar idea, this time with the suggestion of polyrhythms in the distant and heavily-treated percussive elements circling in the background behind uneasy ambience. it builds to the closer spiritual quest, where overlaid rhythms in 3 and 4 are not easily reducible and create the tension at the track’s centre driving it to its conclusion.
