the long awaited first release from melbourne diva house/ bizarro group zanzibar chanel. if ru paul and william onyeabor had a love child states the back cover, a hint of the quirky funky productions that have come to define the sound of zanzibar chanel. or perhaps an inside joke from a group who have, until now, remained largely unknown to those outside of melbournes underground scene.

the recent advance 1-sided 12 inch featuring the vakula and oe remixes is now sold out and out of print (never to be repressed). now you can get the full release. this 12 inch features 4 different, but excellent mixes of this track from lusty zanzibars first ep for glenview records. the original is a groovy, feel good synth driven instrumental cut. volta cab gives it a rough house edge, vakula goes for an acid house vibe and oe drops a driving, dark house mix. excellent!

after a handful of smashing remixes and compilation features on nang records, lusty zanzibar returns to the fold with a cracking solo effort named the >the feeling ep.< title track is a spaced out exercise in immersive square-wave programming, reminiscent of the pre-internet computer gaming age when colours were 8-bit and vivid, and soundtracks were hyper-colour opuses. the complex synth work is underpinned by a driving beat with ethereal vocal wisps and crystalline pads. nice. the first of three remixes for >the feeling< comes from ilya santana, with his >celestial version<, and celestial it is indeed! a picturesque scene is set, the rhythm is wound back and a super laid back vibe allows the vocal line >remember how you are feeling< to sit more purposefully in the mix, alongside the tip-toeing bass line and often euphoric chords. up next comes the max essa dub version, introducing some arp-synth subtleties, replacing the main vocal hook to great effect. to finish we have a mix from fear of theydon who brings a touch of arpeggiated femininity and tasteful woodblock percussion to the table. its a fulfilling yet sultry up-beat journey.

sometime chicken lips collaborator and full time disco don stevie kotey keeps the momentum going on his longstanding and ever consistent imprint by going slightly off piste with the latest bearfunk 12inch. for my friends is the work of lusty zanzibar aka alex cordiner, cabaret voltaire fan and former holistic artist, and we re struggling to describe it effectively to be honest. its a simple concoction of fluttery synth riffs and fat bottom end, but has the sort of quirky melody that you just dont expect to hear in a noo disco record, or a house record for that matter. it is, however totally infectious, and destined to be one of bearfunks biggest of the year we reckon. solid mixes come from kotey and lusty himself, and all are dominated by the riff, as will your brain be after listening to this package a few times. beginning of the night, end of the night, all night, all aboard the wonky disco train to zanzibar

2019 repress - first recorded in 1983 under the name visual, boyd jarvis s cut the music got me is one of the first true house records. a staple on the 80s new york club scene, the visionary instrumental dub was played everywhere from the paradise garage to zanzibar, dance-floors packing to it s mix of throbbing bass and wooshes of analogue synth magic. at ransom note we ve long been obsessed with the record, so when house hunting s aiden d araujo interviewed boyd - and found out that we could license it - we jumped at the chance. now, we present the music got you sounding bigger and better than ever before. remastered from boyd s original tapes by keith tenniswood at curved studios, the music got me is pressed on limited edition, heavyweight vinyl for clarity and bass pressure. complimenting the original release come 2 completely new mixes the first is a dubbed out masterpiece from edit-king nick the record alongside dan tyler of the idjut boys. between them they take the essence of jarvis s original and tease it out into a cavernous disco killer. next up comes bawrut man behind ransom notes debut release, the nu-acid anthem ciquita. bawrut does what he does best, throwing in latin percussion, layers of screwball 303 burbles, and a sense of joy, all whilst keeping boyd s original bass groove rolling.

‘lillygood party!’ is the brand new bbe compilation from highly respected swiss dj alex attias. taking its name from a party he runs in his native lausanne, lillygood has gradually evolved into a radio show and even a label, now on its 4th release. refecting the music he plays at the clubnight, ‘lillygood party!’ is packed with funk, disco, deep house and boogie bullets from across the globe. “the idea is to present not only rare or difcult tracks to fnd, simply good grooves for people to play out, or listen to at home.”
from rare japanese disco gems, through spiritual jazz, to genre defying sounds from broken-beat cohorts kaidi tatham and dego, ‘lillygood party!’ takes a unique trip inside the musical mind of one of dance music’s true nonconformists.
alex attias got his start in back in ’88 playing funk, house, jazz, and disco, as well as producing under various monikers such as mustang, freedom soundz or beatless. moving to london in ’97 he started his ‘visions’ label and found himself at the epicentre of the emerging west london ‘broken beat’ scene which grew around his studio at goya. releases on people, planet e, ubiquity, neroli, archive and compost followed, as well as remixes for incognito, 4hero, ennio morricone, sun ra, art blakey, roni size and laurent garnier among others.

out 2 is a project from jeremy campbell and r. zanzibar, who have previously worked together on albums for l.i.e.s. and lectric sands under different aliases. they sound right at home on emotional response, channeling the influence of 1980s new york dancefloor hybridization into six original tracks and their counterpart dub versions. its an impeccable tribute to the forefathers of new / no / minimal wave with the right kind of funk rubbed in the groove and ample space in the mix for all the live dubbing the style demands. moving is a surefire death disco party starter, dancing hovers in a beyond the grave island boogie reverie and some airs red there heads out into exotically enhanced territory without losing that nyc grit. it s a marvelous record, with the dub versions adding new dimensions to the music rather than simply repeating the same tricks sans vocals.

slow town s 17th release from melbournes luis cl is an ode to analogue jams. the cran town ep shows what luis cl (one half of the zanzibar chanel duo and co-founder of ruff records) is know for: dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some detroit influences. the three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.

brand new edition of soul jazz records’ brasil album recorded in rio de janeiro in 1994 with a host of legendary brazilian musicians including sivuca, raul de souza and singer joyce moreno – which has remained one of the key defining early releases from the record label. out-of-print for over 20 years (!!!) the album has now been fully digitally re-mastered for this new 2018 edition. includes down
the album was recorded at the height of the first wave of interest in brazilian music in london in the 1990s. joyce and a group led by husband drummer tutty moreno had just been brought to the uk for the first time ever by gilles peterson and brazilian music obsessive joe davis (and future head of far out records) and performing to over 2.000 new young fans.

rhode & brown are back on their motherlabel toy tonics! after last years breakbeat - tune st hippolyte and getting remixed by their buddies hodini and glenn astro, their new ep takes their sound further again. from diy-disco to dreamy house, whatever you like to call it.. the tracks have this joyful touch, that makes their sound so special. this time their production way was a little bit different: while spending holidays on the marvellous island of zanzibar they produced the raw versions of this ep. they set up their studio at a beach cabanne. with a monkey becoming their muse. they monkey came over every day to listen to their sounds. they became friends and called the monkey rosie and fed her with mangos. when back in europe the munich boys still were in a balearic mood. so they went to a house deep in the south of france to finish the music. the result were 4 tracks. three for this ep. and one track that they gave to the other munich based label public possession for their recent serie a compilation. which makes totally sense: public possession and toy tonics both have links to gomma records. its all a family thing. where great munich vibes incoming!

following on from the ability ii pressure re-release, major problems and compassion cuts present another in-house favourite from their vaults: the sublime garage/rnb earworm dont tell me (how love should feel) by 2-bmw. a tony humphries/zanzibar favourite, the sole release on life of luxury in 1990 was new jersey producer larry p rauson’s first cut, and never saw a full release. it’s presented with three remarkable dubs from the mysterious man in bed, two of which in turn are flipped by compassion crew and, completing the circle, by larry himself. full colour cover with matt finish. restored and mastered by thomas p heckmann at trope. cut by andreas kauffelt at schnittstelle. artwork by mel keane. larry on dont tell me: tony played the song at zanzibar (on a) saturday night. that sunday morning my phone was blowing up... that weekend gave me the moment of my career. i was an engineer at the local cable company. listening to tony humphries on the radio, not expecting it, tony humphries played my record on his show... i did not last much longer at that job.

dimitri from paris and his brother in crime dj rocca come back to gomma with a new 3 track ep. dimitri is a legend! from his playboy mansion compilations to his own tracks, his always inspiring dj sets and most of all: his never disappointing edits (prince: i wanna be your lover!). let s put it like this: probably there is not one dj with taste on this planet that hasn t got his personal dimitri from paris favorite track in his bag. dimitri has been doing consistently good music over the last 20 years. since he first appeared with his very parisian album sacrebleu in 1996. he quickly became a worldwide respected european first league eclectic disco djs - along with dj harvey and ashley beedle. he officially remixed hundreds of artists. from björk and new order to michael jackson. he also produced los amigos invisibles -super pop venezuela- album which grabbed a nomination for a grammy award. some years ago he teamed up with italian producer, dj and man of many talents dj rocca. rocca might be known to many for his work as ajello and crimea x. he also produced music for cosmic dj hero baldelli. dimitri and rocca have a magic touch. together they have been doing 3 eps for gomma. this is the fourth ep. new school booty electronic disco. glamorous as ever. nasty as always.

visions congo is yet another moniker from discrepant’s head honcho, goncalo f cardoso, taking africa as a starting point to evoke the memories and re-imagined experiences of his 6-month stay there in 2015.
most of the recordings and compositions were done in the great lakes of africa region of uganda, congo (drc), tanzania as well as the island of zanzibar.
