here at bearfunk we have been pretty busy as of late it was a casual visit to geneva just like any other. we had just finished a buzzing set and soon after we found ourselves talking to a five bearded academic types. it turns out they were a bunch of theoretical physicists out on a cosmologists night out. they work them hard at cern and that day the large hadron collector had been a real beast rebooting five times before lunch. they were pissed off and needed a new challenge. we offered them a job on the spot and they promptly moved to our london hq working on a wage of tea, vinyl and nandos. we set them a challenge. build us a time machine! they started soaking up all those bearfunk-groove-boson particles and. you know what? they did it! a time machine of our own. our first task, jump back in time to 1985 and retrieve us something really cool. set controls to the manhattan office to celluloid records. fresh from their hit with herbie hancocks rockit, spearheading rap with fab five freddys change the beat and afrika bambata stompers the legendary label is preparing to release the debut album from nyc-paris emigre lord funk.

with house warming andy vaz returns with his 3rd full lenght album on his own yore imprint. due to andys half indian roots, he is lucky enough to owe a beach house just outside of mangaluru, south india in the state of karnataka. where most parts of the album were written over a period of 6 months.

denis kaznacheev is better known as one half of the russian duo easy changes. hes also the co-founder of nervmusic. he advocates a very organic and powerful minimal techno and makes use of his modular system on his own and unique way. denis cooks a mix of emotions to your ears and to the floor. waiting for his visa application between siberia and moscow hes been doing some music for us and we love it. he offered to bring us on its journey with brilliant textures and a superb sounding ep.

fist of facts began life in a basement studio on ludlow street, downtown manhattan, in the mid-80s. the bastard child of liquid liquids salvatore prinicipato & ken man caldeira (part of the liquid liquid extended family and original liquid idiot member) the band lasted nearly a decade during which they created a uniquely downtown new york sound. these tracks sat in storage on cassette tape for 25 years are a part of music history. none of them have ever been heard by the public and it will be released as a hand numbered, 4 colour sleeve limited to 500 12 inches.

2020 repress! 747’s paleo is an essential acid collection of eight diverse tracks, with a vinyl-exclusive d side. aquaregia’s first long playing release weaves through the different faces of acid on a time travelling trip through geological history. the journey begins with warm pads enveloping lush landscapes fringing the shallow, prehistoric seas where swarms of trilobites frenetically scurry, seeking to survive and evolve. roiling subaquatic vulcanism rules the b side, a seeding ground for exotic crystals whose hexagonal points vie for space as the magma cools and the minerals speciate. we’re then taken further into the depths, where planispiral ammonoids swim in the pseudo-antigravity of the saline seas. and finally, closing out the excursion, we’re transported from ages past, through the fleeting present into the future, to a warming ocean with disrupted ecosystems and unpredictable currents, the effect of a morphing climate.

every release is special for us here at hizou. but to clock up our tenth one is a particularly special moment. so it is even more pleasing that we reach this milestone by welcoming on board a producer we admire enormously, life recorder. the man from marseille has a lengthy discography of must-have records to his name already and the super-deep pressure jazz ep will only add to that growing list as he delivers a trio of prime cuts, from the punchy, raw analogue sounds of the title track to the warming subconcious drive and the melodic, acid-flecked traffic jam.

having pinned to perfection the sonics of the adriatic, croatias love international festival bottles up their blissed out rhythms and sunrise sessions for the inauguration of love international recordings, fittingly, with a first release from uk producer begin. bringing the love international feel to wax and digital, the label will encapsulate the range of music the festival’s secluded party paradise has become renowned for. all the way from the balearic tinges of this first release, to the meatier house, techno and electro selections on show at barbarellas. begin aka james holroyd has a long history with love international. dating back to the early 2000s, holroyd was one of the first guest djs at the old garden festival on the former festival site in petrcane. long serving chemical brothers tour dj, back to basics resident since the 90s and bugged out co founder, begin has long paid his paid his dues to the scene. in the words of dave harvey: hes been an absolute workhorse in dance music for time. love international 001s tracks seemingly fit the festivals own daily lifecycle. from the docile guitar picking of meditative ep opener wood trees to the slow daybreak funk of‘daypulse where synths pierce through the track like sun rays through the adriatic dusk, the ep is a holistic reflection of what one might hear at one of the festivals fabled sunrise sessions. garden interlude ushers in a fresh burst of energy, with the revitalizing sounds of piano house, paired with warming neo soul vocals. into the fun is a self fulfilling prophecy, closing the ep on a quintessentially balearic note.

rhyw is alex tsiridis aka one half of cassegrain. on this, his solo debut for arcing seas, his smoul-dering alien techno sound manifesto continues to thrive over three unique tracks. the morphing, deconstructed acid of unpunishable - a molten statement of lusty intent - strikes first in a heady, hazy pummelling of doom-funk. ‘vertisol pushes crisp and dry snaking percussion through an anechoic chamber, the bass end neatly warming at first then burning hard through your mid section. an icy cold shot of ‘aqua velva is the final offering - a pushing sub-level trip through rhyws private domain - where tingling rushes of bass and static charges wash over us leaving a sinful residue. arcing seas is an anagram of cassegrain. it started out as a secret alias, releasing a couple eps on our circula sound. the secret was less well kept after the duo appeared at berghain under this name. a year later, after deciding to start a label, it finally made sense to bring the two together

aus music follow up a string of exclusive releases from primitive trust with tee mango (one half of pt) having released on clone in 2017 tee mango comes back to aus for his second ep in as many years. ep#2 carries forth much of the the same classiness hes well know for. a side ‘come a little closer samples a personal favourite make it last forever by inner life which is paired with playful drum rhythms and smooth rhodes chords. prototypical opts for punchy drums and a swinging bass, a track that would work as well peak time as it would warming up. wazoo rounds off the perectly balanced ep a deep cruiser with a pinch of acid.

after the original comes the remix. or in this case three. i:cube, chinaski and aera help you refresh your memory and re-draw drawn from memory from benjamin fröhlichs second part of the rude movements series. its one single track, but every remixer has taken his very own approach and came up with a new interpretation. the iconic french producer and permanent vacation long time favourite, i:cube, transformed the original into a soul warming and heart melting late night bomb that lets the sun appear even in the darkest places. chinaski out of frankfurt, well known from his releases on live at robert johnson and uncanny valley, fuses italo disco with a john carpenter-style soundtrack aesthetic and an infectious bassline completed by a full on guitar solo in the break. aera, fresh from releasing his album on permanent vacation, is slowing down the tempo, rearranging the layers of the original and adding a bubbly and underwater atmosphere that let the dub stabs shine. three different versions that may represent different memories of one long night.

chevel gives the prism-pushers at mumdance & logos’ different circles their first album release with always yours, a slanted new take on the ‘weightless’ paradigm, floating somewhere between headspaces associated with the styles of lee gamble, actress and logos. paradoxically the longest and yet most minimalistic release on different circles to date, always yours says its piece in succinct yet expansive terms, rendering precisely tooled rhythms and technoid motifs in acres of suspenseful emulated space in a way that connects the brutally efficient dynamic of late ‘90s tech-step with a raster noton-like appreciation of pointillist reduction.in that imagined space chevel moves like a soviet gymnast or prototype robot fluidly executing a demanding routine full of intricate, rigid steps. from the ambient airlock of one evening in july he pulls off the aerobic mid-air rolige of the call, which comes off like a syncopated sleeparchive workout, before twysting into the knotted quasi-step of bulletand stepping into hyperspace on arp 2600. another ambient interlude warming bath returns the lp to balmier states, before the jagged pulse of data recovery pulls back into the dance like a virulent alva noto piece, and dem drums pitch to the rave’s darker side, but ultimately the lushly self-explanatory underwater and always yours keep the lp hovering around the edge of ecstasy and the abyss with a grasp of heady, day-after feelings known to ravers the world over.•the first artist release on logos and mumdance’s different circles•floating in ‘weightless’ space between lee gamble, logos, actress and alva noto•vinyl master + cut by matt colton at alchemy.•cover photo by yusuke yamatani. design + layout by our place

label head enzo siragusa teams with ibiza resident nima gorji for the slick foreal ep the original mix (vinyl only) rolls deep, building nicely with a warming pad whilst subtle tripped out sounds flicker throughout the mix. djebali offers up more of a bassline friendly mix on the flip whilst fuse mainstay seb zito dusts it down with a phatt kick drum and ups the phunk on his version.

last years on the corner underground smash release, the 12inch ep santuris embaire umeme, introduced uganda’s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri’s embaire umeme 12inch and are a vital documentation of the iganga village’s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings

2nd output of the beau mot plage collective. here on this two tracker, they have chosen to put the light on stellae, a young producer from south of france who has been dealing with his machines for nearly a decade. the two tracks on this ep showcase the last sound inspiration of this talented young man. selected by the beau mot plage crew, these two tracks are vivid pictures of a journey that stretches through the night, lavirra could be peak time of it and kfort both the warming up and the afterhour.
