chubby has already earned its stripes as a podcast and party in australia dealing in connoisseurs deep house, and their leap to the world of vinyl is no less classy. the first release splits a 12- between four esteemed practitioners of true skool beats for switched on heads, leading in with antipodean maestro ewan jansen. after delivering the plush tones of his -plants,- moods & grooves label boss mike grant pops up to remix jansen with stunning, understated results. trinidadian deep takes over on the b side with the typically shimmering melodics and dextrous drums he s much loved for. mr yt then serves up a final remix, nudging -move me- just a little up the energy scale with the help of a killer organ line placed at the front of the mix.

louisiana soul singer bobby king first recorded as a solo artist in 1973 for the reprise label where he also sang for ry cooder. in 1981 he switched to the main warner brorthers imprint and recorded what has become for soul fans a most highly regarded self-titled album. “if you don’t want my love” became a single, an original pressing for this ‘modern’ dancefloor record recently onsale for £300. it is coupled with an exceptuional track from the album “lovers by night” not previously available on 7” vinyl.

the kalita sound is becoming more clearly defined with each release, as the london-based label continues to mine the rich history of overlooked disco, funk and soul from america and africa. darryl douglas inc. originally released -holding on- in 1981, and when you listen to it it s no wonder that second hand copies used to fetch dizzying prices. it s a perfect get down jam that no doubt used to delight switched on diggers with money to burn, but a track this perfectly crafted for good times should never be confined to the ivory tower of the collectors. -jesus is the light- is the original b side, a slower devotional soul cut with gospel undertones.

it seems like the italians are well and truly taking over here at freerange these days. following hot on the heels of releases from stefano ritteri and bugsy we now present you with a brilliant three tracker from rome-based producer whitesquare. known for previous releases on 2020 vision and toy tonics whitesquare has switched up his sound a little to delve deeper into the world of afro-inspired electronic house which fits perfectly on freerange and should appeal to fans of hyenah, rancido and the keinemusik crew.

indianapolis band led by organist bobby watley (ex-lonnie smith group) and driven by his funky jack mcduff-influenced playing. discovered in march 1971, funk inc had sent bob porter a demo tape which languished in a pile of other until the producer finally got around to working his way through the whole batch. the band s tape grabbed him as soon as he heard the first notes and the rest, as they say, is history. a quintet, funk inc s constituent members were leader bobby watley on organ, eugene barr on tenor saxophone, steve weakley on guitar, jimmy munford on drums and cecil hunt on congas. watley, the leader, worked originally as a drummer, with both winston walls and lonnie smith. he switched to organ in 1969 and was heavily influenced by jack mcduff. barr played his first professional gig with little milton and then went on to lead his own band prior to joining funk inc. munford worked with artists of the calibre of etta james, jerry butler and james brown. hunt had been with the coasters as well as playing with local california bands. weakley was one of the (then) new breed of guitarists whose debt owed as much to jimi hendrix as kenny burrell.

keeping things on a strictly low key tip comes the second release from instinct, serving up nothing but razor-sharp uk garage for those who love the deeper side of el b et al. together kicks proceedings off with a nagging 4x4 bump and some beautifully mellow melodies, while motion heads into slightly moodier territory without losing that crafty beat programming nous. voodoo is a more bugged out jam with some heavy processing and a preference for atmospheric touches throughout. realise keeps the quality up once more, rounding the ep off with yet more future-minded goodness that should get all switched on selectors reaching for these instinct 12inches again and again.

to the untrained ear a collaboration between mosaic boss steve o sullivan and minimal house maestro ricardo villalobos may not seem like the most obvious sound clash. however, dig a little deeper and you ll find that both these artists have a long history and shared love of stripped back aesthetics and dubbed out rhythms carving out respective sounds that have never strayed far from their roots. sullric is the result of a daylong session at the end of 2016 where the pair plugged in, switched on and set everything to cycle: recording several hours worth of material to tape with an edit of their favourite passage worked into two versions in post-production.

jürgen karg’s career in music began in the 1960s as bass player for german jazz legend wolfgang dauner. it was not until the 1970’s that he switched his attention to electronic music, launching himself wholeheartedly into exploring the genre and building up an extensive collection of synthesizers over a five year period. his efforts culminated in “elektronische mythen”, a mighty opus of experimental music which reveals new aspects every time it is played. jürgen karg’s music is deeply serious, as vexing as a jamais vu, yet absolutely beautiful. “elektronische mythen” is an album which fits like a puzzle piece between the first and second soundtracks for a clockwork orange. it’s worth to check it out!

the music has come into my life when i was about 9 years old, thanks to one of my sisters tape with songs by bob marley and the wailers. so i switched from reggae to dub, from dub to jazz, from jazz to radical improvisation in a moment.now i m 33, and after producing pretty much any kind of music, i want to put together what i still like of dub music with that of the south of europe, which is the place where i grew up, melting everything together with vintage equipments and working with modern machines at the same time. playing and producing this music has been therapeutic for my head. making all this known is for me like seeding again the love for music without any distinction. andrea gabriele 1981 - 2015

after 20 years of experience, gary martin couldnt resist a 12 inch that is also the 50th release for teknotika: a label from detroit that didnt exactly stick with the game when it switched to the mp3 format. *basking in blackness* is a composition of textured broken beat then classic four on the floor old school soul. *synthotika* is what would happen if a synthasizer could take over an orchestra. a track inspired by detroit peers no doubt. *every bit as beautiful* goes sensative deep house piano, a lil latin percussion and soaring eno-esque synths to top it off. the title is a bit sarcastic, let us face it, there is no life after techno!

formed in 1997 by philipp albrecht (guitar), rene albrecht (drums) and christoph lenz (bass) - singer christian erne entered the band in 2000. since he left plenty enuff in 2007 philipp albrecht and jessica sigfalk took the micro power. plenty enuff have been experimenting with sounds from the sixties for almost ten years. starting off with a traditional type of ska they soon switched to a dark blend of roots reggae. their large amount of shows already brought them to the jazz festival of montreux this year.
