the beacon crowns ashurst hill in dalton, lancashire, looming over the verdant english countryside nearly six hundred feet above sea level. this spartan brick monolith was erected in 1798 as a watch tower to warn of french invasion during the napoleonic war — & there it silently remains, keeping infinite vigil. it stands in tess roby’s mind. the beacon calls to her. “throughout my life i have felt the pull to return to it,” she says. “i’m beckoned by father’s roots & by the sullen landscape of fields leading to the coast.”

first terrace records is honoured to present the beacon sound choir singing sunday songs - a project conceived by peter broderick and brought to life through collaborations with a number of portland-based individuals including david allred, holland andrews (like a villain), branic howard and heather woods broderick.
beacon sound choir is one of broderick’s most ambitious and avant-garde projects to date. utilising the harmonies of a 35 strong choir, sunday songs plays out with an almost religious undercurrent, the product of individuals inspired to commit a divine act of collaboration, recalling the rare splendour of a community in seamless alliance.

uk-bred, berlin-based neinzer returns with a two-piece record on london’s yumé. taking found sounds from the city he lives in the fear explores themes of personal desire, the fear of failure and rejection. juxtaposing this side, the beacon employs a heavily resonated rain sample to create a dreamier work centered around a throbbing bass line and aerodynamic chords in the mixolydian mode.

for much of the brooklyn duos career, beacon has worked with a kind of effervescent, forward-looking r&b that evokes out-of-body experiences, but with their new l1 ep, the music is anchored assuredly to your flesh, bone, and physical senses.

thomas mullarney and jacob gossett, aka brooklyn duo beacon, introduced themselves to the world with the no body and for now eps, both released last year on ghostly international. the eps were united by minimalist, r&b influenced instrumentation, and also by a lyrical theme, with both serving as meditations on the darkness that underpins the most intense of human emotions: love.

for now is the second ep by brooklyn duo beacon, five songs that continue the bands exploration of the dark spaces under the surface of human relationships. as with the bands debut ep no body, for now is a record that conceals a great deal of depth beneath a melodic veneer— again, there is a stark contrast between thomas mullarneys honeyed vocals and the words he is singing, although this time the mood is perhaps less sinister and more reflective.

while for many of his contemporaries repetition became a new standard rather than innovation, jacek sienkiewicz with every release seems to be broading his musical horizons and challenging new territories. beacon seems to be even more organic than previous recognition releases, and the warm, yet unstoppable beat workout suddenly goes all jazzy and cinematic, with irresistible saxophone hook. big surprise here, but jacek blends the sounds into one of his trademark, 12+ minutes long, massive club anthem. another surprise is brought by the flipside - this remix is courtesy of the man of the moment michel bauman, here applying his soulphiction alter ego to dark, smoky and very tropical variation on a familiar theme. all over, another very impressive release from jacek sienkiewicz, man who never fails to impress.
