the third in struts inspiration information studio collaboration series brings together an intriguing pairing between one of africas great bandleaders, mulatu astatke, with the next level musicianship of the heliocentrics collective from the mighty roster of stones throw / now again. known primarily through the successful ethiopiques album series and the film soundtrack to jim jarmuschs ?broken flowers, mulatu astatke is one of ethiopias foremost musical ambassadors. his selfstyled ethio-jazz sound flourished during the swinging addisÑ era of the late 60s as he successfully fused western jazz and funk with traditional ethiopian folk melodies. the heliocentrics have become known as one of the uks foremost free-thinking collectives of musicians, inspired by a wide palette covering sun ra, james brown, david axelrod and all manner of psych, afro and eastern sounds. the collective have featured on records by madlib and dj shadow. now a fixture within the stones throw / now again roster, they forged their own genre-breaking directions in the astral analogue groove on their 2007 debut album, out there. a number of tour dates around the release and headline slots at festivals throughout 2009 have been confirmed.

repress !! students red axes are very excited to present the first part of their new project called: trips, a multi media venture combining music, film and travelling across the globe in pursuit of extra ordinary collaborations. niv arzi and dori sadovnik are seeking to discover new grounds and sounds, and to record local musicians, indigenous instruments and present workshops for youth music schools. in march of 2017, the israeli duo touched down in africa for the first time, and set up camp in both ethiopia and ivory coast, yielding in africa, a triple header ep which features three slices of contemporary body music, with both east and west african musical motifs. the project will always present a musical release, on vinyl and digital, that was created on the trip, accompanied with a documentary, showing the whole journey.

nick anthony simoncino is synonymous with the revival of italian house music over the past five years or so, and so it feels right for him to be delivering this album to vibraphone. of course, simoncino has more than enough skills (and hardware) to make something truly special, and that s apparent from the opening strains of -mystic adventures- onwards. there s a sense of urgency and mystery woven into tracks like -righteous rule-, where haunting leads wobble over sizzling drum machines, and the overall mood is redolent of 80s soundtracks mixed with the uneasy side of chicago house music. maintaining a punchy finish throughout and constantly reaching for the spooky side of machine soul, simoncino has more than delivered for the legendary italian label.

ernesto chahoud’s ‘taitu’ is a collection of soul-fuelled stompers straight from the dancefloors of 1970s addis ababa. a breathless journey through the unique ethio sound that bands were forging at the time, the 24-track compilation is the result of the lebanese dj and crate digger’s decadelong love affair with the ‘golden age’ of ethiopian music.

the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel aviv’s mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica), i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata – i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. it’s a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood, and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them, each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day, in a small studio shack in addis ababa.

suns of dub is a performing ensemble and production team, creating unique sound experiences that blend live instruments and dub influenced genres. their hybrid reggae sound includes live melodica, steel pan, nyabinghi drums, live dub and dj effects. the group has been working and releasing music together since 2010.

trio kazanchis got together by coincidence in 2009 in addis ababa, ethiopias musical hotspot while playing jam sessions in melaku belays club fendika and mulatu astatkes own african- jazz club before touring europe most underground venues and related festivals.

after releasing around fifty 45 rpm singles and his first 33 rpm album (ethiopian modern instrumental hits aelp 10, re-released by heavenly sweetness hl092vl), amha esthete set about compiling his best 45s on a series of now legendary albums in 1972.

ethiopian records (born endeguena mulu) is a musician based in addis ababa, ethiopia. mulu first started making music while in high school, experimenting with a wide spectrum of sound palettes. his tastes and influences are as varied as his productions, ranging from traditional ethiopian folk music, to the dub heavy electronics of mala.

500 limited edition 180 gram vinyl double album that comes with 32 page comic novel. written and illustrated by ulrich troyer. songs for william is the first in a trilogy of experimental dub projects from ulrich troyer and deep medi musik. ulrich troyer was born in innsbruck and raised in tyrol austria, he studied architecture and music at university and now resides in vienna where he lives and works as a freelance artist and musician. ulrich has been producing music and experimenting with electronics for over 10 years on various projects that include soundtracks for movies, dance productions, exhibitions and sound installations. since 2005 ulrich has also been performing live as a member of the vegetable orchestra.songs for william sees ulrich explore his love for dub music and the experimentations of pioneers such as king tubby, sound dimension and rhythm and sound alongside the influences of mulatu, tony allen and the psychedelic sounds of selda. to accompany this release is the first part chapter of a comic novel featuring the main character william (a guitar effect pedal!) and his journey! all analogue synthesizers, effects, stompboxes, samplers, guitars, percussion and melodica played, programmed, recorded and dubbed by ulrich troyer at the 4bit studio vienna.
