french producer lb aka labat returns with a new lp named “fake memories” on his own label alélah records. he surprises us with some more hip-hop and r’n’b music, liberating his love for jazz rythms and harmonics. known for his talent at playing with samples, this new lp expresses his actual potential, offering a large use of instrumental stuff : violin and piano chords, guitar riffs… together with delicate voices that balance with the old school drums and procure gentleness to the sharp hats. the b3 eponymous track even discloses the man’s voice, with lyrics sang by himself

following hivers excellent ep, let recordings again welcomes american dj and producer jon hester to their imprint. currently based in berlin but with previous spells in chicago and minneapolis, he returns to the label for a second ep following 2017s communication ep, and other outings on the likes of rekids and dystopian. his adventurous drum programming and high speed techno style kicks things off with radiance, a manically melodic track that takes you on an energetic trip. impermanence is a deeper, more cinematic piece that features rueful pads but still a driving drum line, then stratospheric has huge, hammering kick drums and squelchy synth sounds as well as dancing keys that bring warmth, groove, and soul. last of all, this high class excursion is completed with horizon, delivering barreling drum patterns and edgy pads that trap you in suspense as it races on. all four tracks deliver a high impact techno sound that very much looks to the future.

rarefied return after a deliciously jazzy release from their sister label. this time label mainstay zygos is at the helm for a release that blends rarefied’s penchant for outer-national sample digging, trap rhythmic formations, and psychedelic soundfields for a three track ep that feels like some other-wordly vhs tape found in the woods.

to conclude the unsung and defeated series we turned our attention to the distopic wave group wavering hands. the duo comes from bern and zurich, and this is their first vinyl release. the use of real drums, guitars and vocals is an unusual field for us, nevertheless, as it is clear now, we have shown no fear in going wherever our interest take us. and this time is pure new wave, kraut rock inspired music. a perfect ending for this series of unsung and defeated local heroes.

fuji is the heavily percussive and improvisational style of nigerian popular music, at once modern and yet deeply rooted in the traditional islamic yoruba culture of nigeria.

sami baha is a turkish producer based in south east london. his music was introduced to the world via his 2016 ep “mavericks” (planet mu), recorded while he was moving from istanbul to london where he’s now been living the last 3 years. sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.
while his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, “free for all” expands its range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of mcs from all corners of the globe: uk drill squad 67’s dimzy, stockholm’s yung lean and chicago rapper and singer dj nate (aka flexxbabii) who’s previously recorded on planet mu as a footwork producer. the record also features the rowdy sing-song of egyptian mcs dawsha and abanob from cairo whom sami met while on tour in egypt.
