r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.

der wahl-new-yorker chrome sparks veröffentlicht vielseitiges debütalbum auf counter records! chrome sparks (aka jeremy malvin) weiß, wie er seine tracks im besten licht stehen lässt. sein selbstbetiteltes debütalbum, das via counter records (ein ninja tune-sublabel) erscheint, sticht heraus mit einem funkelnden sound: eine euphonie aus hiphop, house und hell leuchtender arbeit am synthesizer. die platte ist das endergebnis jahrelanger arbeit in malvin’s marinewerft (seinem studio in brooklyn) und einer abgelegen hütte nördlich von new york. allein dort hat er einen ganzen monat allein zugebracht, um den ablenkungen der stadt zu entkommen und um diesen prozess zu destillieren, was anschließend zu einer periode intensiver kreativität wurde. auf dem album selbst finden sich zusammenarbeiten mit dem australischen duo kllo (ghostly) und body languages’ angelica bess (die auch bereits mit machinedrum kollaborierte). das album ist sowohl ergebnis eines obsessiven produktionsansatzes als auch über die rastlose jagd nach neuen ideen. sein kreative mentalität wurde sowohl durch live-auftritte als auch studiogegniedel geprägt. sie ist das grundgerüst, das es ihm erlaubte, so viele diffuse ideen wirklichkeit werden zu lassen, die schlussendlich in einem hervorstechenden und vielfältigen debütalbum resultieren.

originally released on anthony shakirs frictional recordings in 97, fbks knobs & switches is set to drop on rekids newly launched re-issue label r-time records. since his debut fbk has had a prolific career spanning a number of decades, releasing on rekids, barba records, and the now defunct diametric. this release follows on from the sir lord comixx re-issue, giving classic tracks the acknowledgement they didnt initially get first time round. the release starts with the robust kicks and stuttering hats of rollin on 6/4 as murky notes make their way into the mix, making way for the sci-fi inspired synths and infectious claps of reservations & misgivings. packed with fast paced drums, feedback employs a sultry bassline and euphoric harmonies until skipping percussion and echoing effects conclude the package in the tet offensive.

the ‘matière obscure ep’ is the first in a two-part series, whereby each composition was made using only recordings from one specific material (metal, glass and wood). the process involved taking everyday objects and making them resonate in every way possible, such as striking them with mallets or using a violin bow, and building up a sample library. ‘weld (metal_01)’ kicks off the release with its syncopated percussion and gritty groove before moving into the cavernous ‘molten (glass_01)’ that’s composed of rolling drums and sinister atmospherics. ‘carve (wood_01)’ is a lot bouncier by comparison, with its fidgeting bassline and murky tones until the menacing ‘cast (glass_02)’ concludes the package with machine inspired effects and a cacophony of stabs.
