hypeltd are happy to introduce another new talent in the form of j. alvarez. it is a name you wont know yet, but the man behind it – seattle based producer chris 214 – has already made a name for himself with some rude electro, techno and even ghetto tech releases on in-the-know labels like frustrated funk (a subsidiary of clone) harbour city sorrow (and again) and others. now, though, he is on a house tip, and it is for that reason that he has assumed this new moniker…
continuing in the tradition of offering up sounds a little less accessible than its older hypercolour brother, hypeltd seems to have once again unearthed a producer more than worthy of popular attention.

the french trio evergreen (previously name we are evergreen) grew up listening to pop music from the us and the uk. yet, like many of the most influential artists of todays french pop scene (fishbach, halo maud, etc.) they value both french and english to deliver their message. this new album Ôoverseas was recorded with ash workman (fran¨ois & the atlas mountains, metronomy, christine and the queens), and see the band use a warm sound loaded with synthesizers and draw influences from the likes of django django, air or metronomy to craft percussive electro-pop songs.

repress - al dobson jr. returns to rhythm section international with his debut full length lp. spread over 28 tracks and clocking in at just under one hour, this body of work provides a glimpse into the mind of one of the uks most talented, enigmatic producers. al dobsons debut mini album marked the inauguration of bradley zeros fledgling label back in 2014, proving to be a breath of fresh air to the london scene with its loose, undefinable sound and unique approach to production. as a newcomer, al dobson jr.s music didnt remain a secret for long, with major global tastemakers such as gilles peterson, theo parrish, dego, alex nut and osunlade being early adopters. as with other key releases on 22a and izwid, it didnt take long for rye lane volume 1 to go from obscure debut to cult classic, propelling the artist and the label onto the international platform. at once a continuation and evolution of the sound, rye lane volumes ii & iii offers a deeper exploration into the al dobson jr universe, moving with ease through tempos and textures but never losing that effortless magic that makes adj stand out from the crowd.

the 1986 album by american folk singer / songwriter loudon wainwright iii back on clear 180 gram vinyl.

tatu metsätähti and tatu peltonen formed their electro duo mr velcro fastener in the small town of turku, finland back in 1995. in 1999, after a couple of twelve inches, they released their first full length album ‘lucky bastards living up north’ on i220, which was well noted (not only for its hyper colourful cover art by the designers republic). the album took the duo touring in europe and overseas, and led to further releases on labels like stars-music, ali b’s air recordings, solina records, cyber dance and of course billy nasty’s electrix, as well as remixes for the likes of hardfloor, marco carola, dk8, transparent sound and aux88. returning to electrix with their third full ep for the label (and a gap of 13 years!) they have delivered their own unique and recognizable electro sound with two new cuts. ‘a monster in two worlds’ with its electro-funk sound, classic vocoded vocals and grinding groove is a perfect opener, while ‘bakteriofag’ (bacteriophage in english) like its name, creeps up like a virus, infecting the senses with its crisp and shining melody. additionally, there’s remixes of ‘a monster in two worlds’ from silicon scally (carl finlow in his electro guise) and m-twelve (the new moniker recently launched by billy nasty and surface’s nick dunton) to complete the line-up.

after being in the reggae band the heavymanners (parted in 2009) led by takeshi heavy akimoto, and participating as a supporting member of dry&heavy after which the band reunited with the original rhythm section, sahara (keyboard/programming) and ohkuma, who worked as the drummer of soul dimension, started the dub unit undefined. it is no exaggeration to say they have pushed the variously formatted term of dub to the far shore experimentally and furthermore, liberated the definition of dub to undefined. their debut 7inch vinyl released in march last year from their own label newdubhall is being well received even overseas and in the spring of 2018, this 10inch vinyl new culture days will be out, which will be their second release.

nyc label homage continues a hot streak with their third project from uk producer jvxta (pronounced jux-tuh). after an excellent debut on his label hardmatter, jvxta gifts homage with four ny-inspired deep house cuts. brawn is an immediate tone setter. the banging stand-out made waves overseas prior to it s online premier thanks to cinthie, who pressed it to dub plate and played it as the opening track at her boiler room set in berlin. the remaining tracks offer a look into jvxtas unique tastes, and listeners will find themselves lost in quick-fire deep jazz, dreamy 80s tinged house, and a rolling tribal cut that we wished never ended. serious selectors take note, homage is not messing around, and this is a project that you ll reach for again and again.

ghana s dj katapila is back with more minimalist dance music productions, this time inspired in part by his travels overseas. following the success of the re-release of his trotro recording a couple years ago, katapila has been playing in europe and the uk, bringing his style of breakneck-paced, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink west african club music into a very different conte, giving katapila (real name ishmael abbey) inspiration in the kind of music he has heard in places like london. so he made some new music, here we go!

last summer during an evening spent with my friend dj topha, we came upon the everlasting subject of old versus new. i m finding so much great music right now, and not just digging back in time but exploring our own timeline geographically too, he said, the level of production these days is rising fast. you have to check out these snippets from a new label based in casablanca. not long after, in an interesting twist of fate, driss bennis and i began to exchange music: i shared his soundcloud for the first casa voyager release, and he sent me a promo copy which i played out a lot. it seemed only logical to ask him for music for basic moves. later that summer we met in paris for a convivial back to back at dawidu s shop, te iubesc records and sapology. it was as simple as that, and in a few weeks basic moves 04 was ready. night train and overseas blew me away by their quality - the tracks are retro-esque yet fresh, and stem from a loose approach to electro. their arrangements are very smart, not everything is revealed the first time round. the more you listen, the more you understand that the power of the tracks lies in the details. together with ailsa s artwork, stefan s cut and chris mixes the release fell so smoothly into place. i have come to realise how important it is for the scene to release recently produced music as well as treasures from the past. you can t build a community by only playing old records. it s about a combination, about finding gems that glide together. old and new. and for that, i think both these dj booth tracks really fit the bill.

dj punkadelix a.k.a. mayu kondo who based in tokyo, will starts a new project of music production called mayudepth. this ep titled -sneakpeek- featuring the voice by fashion model rie miyamoto and includes remix version by akiko kiyama who is an artist play on a global stage.the cover work shot by a female photographer masami sano and artwork by mayu kondo herself, this album artwork expresses her unique way of seeing things as a collaboration package with female artists working in various fields.the label is “shiki kyokai” which owner by dj shuffle master,who is an innovator of japanese techno sound, which continues to release from overseas top labels such as tresor and bpitch control.

touch sensitive is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist and production wizard michael di francesco. his debut single body stop was one of the first tracks released on future classic, all the way back in 2004. fast-forward to 2013 and his debut ep pizza guy / show me became one of the one of the most internationally beloved releases of 2013, due to the cult status æpizza guyÆ received. since then, touch sensitive has been relentlessly touring and writing, with recent highlights including supporting performances for disclosure, cut copy, flume and flight facilities. now he is back with his infectious, 13 track debut album visions, including the return to spotlight with his eclectic first single lay down, with its blissful melodies and driving keys getting praise and features on tastemaker blogs both nationally and overseas.

over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of keiji haino. through a vast number of recordings and performances haino has staked out a ground all his own creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. for all this, his 1981 debut album watashi dake? has remained enigmatic. originally released in a small edition by the legendary pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in japan and far fewer overseas. original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over. watashi dake? presents a haunting vision stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. written and composed on the spot haino’s vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920s blues and medieval music yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. coupled with starkly minimal packaging featuring the now iconic cover photographs by legendary photog rapher gin satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement.

born roy samuel reid in saint thomas in 1944, i roy was one of jamaicas all-time greatest deejays. a natural-born toaster, his rhyming raps always sounded effortless, whether describing the harsh realities of the inner city, or making light of nonsense nursery rhymes. a former employee at customs and excise, he was first active on a sound system called soul bunnies in the rock steady era, moving to son’s junior in 1968, and later, to the legendary supreme ruler of sound, defecting to the rival stereo sound system after that. hits for harry mudie and other producers soon followed, and after the killer debut album presenting i roy impacted overseas, the toaster began spending frequent periods in london. his longstanding working relationship with hit-making producer bunny lee led to some of his most noteworthy albums during the mid 1970s, the 1977 set cant conquer rasta is a superb showcase-style album, on which the toaster blows hard lyrics over five of lees killer rockers rhythms (recorded with the likes of johnny clarke), each complete with a corresponding aggrovators dub on the flip, all mixed by prince jammy at king tubbys studio

one of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer cornell campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican recording artist. taken under studio one founder clement sir coxsone dodd’s wing at a very young age, cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. he remained based at studio one for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for king edwards in the ska years. he then briefly joined the sensations in rock steady and recorded at treasure isle, before moving back to studio one as leader of the eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as stars and queen of the mistrel, and giving early coaching to slim smith, jacob miller and bassist robbie shakespeare. joining forces with ace producer bunny striker lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. the ropin lp was issued on third worlds justice subsidiary in 1980 a sub label set up to handle strikers product in the uk (though hits like mash you down and the title track had been handled in jamaica by joe gibbs). one of the albums outstanding moments is bandulu, an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the late night blues rhythm, while opening cover, just my imagination, has an uncredited toasting portion from errol scorcher.

with just one 7inch release to their name in the form of the 1981 release, jive baby on a saturday night, the cult of the jellies was possibly accidentally assured with the long lost song being rediscovered by collectors and championed by sonic youth s thurston moore no less. picked up and reissued by the stellar trunk records in 2010, the b-side cut, however, was sadly overlooked. now emotional rescue are proud to license the conversation and remaster it especially for this rerelease. based around a simple drum and bass rhythm, interspersed with crowd noise, playful female vocal yelps and sprinkled with dub effects thrown in to the mix and you wouldn t probably think too much would be going for a track that the band put together in the last two hours of their studio time after jive baby had been completed. however, what you get is a killer gem of pop-punk-dub oddness that gets your head nodding to its infectious, repetitive rhythm laden with effects. with just this one (perfect) track available for license it seemed only right to hand it over to the in-house production team, apophenia, to do their increasingly trademark dubbed out reworking, this time in the form of a true, but respectful version for the flip. with both members of the jellies sadly now living overseas this piece of early 80s british dub as it were, can now be fully treasured for posterity while also, proving a nice little smokers delight.

hirofumi goto aka rondenion made his debut releases on still music back in 2005. shortly after, he released a streak of detroit infused house 12 on rushhour, aesthetic audio and more to great critical acclaim. a dj and producer born in japan. he began working as a recording artist in the late 90s under the name hirofumi goto, and released his global debut, >ameria ep<. it drew attention for its dark beats, unusual for a japanese artist, and was played by top djs like derrik may. he changed his name to rondenion to show respect to chicago and detroit, and began working on an overseas release. ultimately, his love bound ep was released by major labels such as >rush hour< and became a big hit. it reached the top on the rushhourstore sales chart, and became popular in europe. in 2012 he formed >ragrange symphony< with his old friends no milk and kez ym, and he is currently working on a number of projects for his own record label, >ragrange records<.after being approached by roundabout sounds for a remix, discussions shortly after were directed towards a plan for releasing rondenions debut album on both vinyl (roundabout sounds) and digital (plug research). the result is the luster grand hotel debut album, ready to drop in september 2013. luster grand hotel is the most accomplished project from rondenion, an absolute blend of detroit and chicago house, reminiscent of the music from moodymann, theo parrish and rick wilhite. a must have for any real house music fans.

shinichi osawa made his debut as the leader and bassist for mondo grosso, a band formed in kyoto in 1991, with an album mondo grosso released in 1993 from for life records (japan). in the heightened acid-jazz movement, the album got great reviews and was well-received overseas as well. in 1995, after finishing off the tour following the release of the second album born free, the band was disbanded.

only unreleased new tracks from dj deeon and slugo....though he s revered among chicago djs and around the world as the original master of ghetto dance music, deeon started small, on chicagos south side. he sold his dj mixtapes in the parking lot where he lived, and played house parties in the projects. these crowded living room parties started the feeling and inspiration for the sound deeon produced, music he simply refers to as, >for the strippers, for the street<. while tracks like >accelerate< on dance mania were doing well overseas, he was getting little support or play from local chicago clubs. deeon calls ghetto house the >stepchild of chicago house<. eventually the incredible response from his music forced the clubs to concede and play his records. these >techno with a ghetto edge< tracks have found way to the decks in clubs around the world. deeon found his home on chicagos own dance mania label, where he released hits like >let me bang<, >who you wit<, >da dick suck< and >the freaks<. deeon is currently signed to databass records, which is rereleasing most of his back catalog with new remixes!
