ben klock needs no further introduction - he is the epitome of the bleak, hard minimal sound. his album >one< is currently available on ostgut ton, and as a remixer he has earned the highest acclaim for his version of depeche modes >peace<. bens >jack mix< is fittingly titled and lives up to all the expectations of the name. the track is stripped back to a resounding, hammer-like beat framework - minimised for maximum effect.
bpitch legend sascha funke delivers a surprise with another astoundingly reduced remix, at least by his standards. he turns away from the melodic richness of his current album >mango< in favour of repetitive fragments and an extended arc of tension which will surely make his >immolate< remix a massive after-hour hit.

bristol-born and london-based producer rekordah takes charge of lo fi funk records second instalment. as well as running the independent label pollen, rekordah also promotes a series of parties of the same name with efa (which have hosted artists of the caliber of mike slott and slugabed among others), and crafts his own brand of cosmic, dismembered hip hop, in that wonky style everyone is raving about.
>cherry coke< on the a side, is full of bubbling sounds that evoke the soda drink your nephew drinks while he plays with that atari you found in the attic, played over a dilla style beat, whilst in the flip side we find >butternut<, in which p-funk synthesisers rise side to side with space age special effects, frantic syncopated drums and 22nd century boom bap.

repress! this track was already teasing us on one of theos mix cds and now sees the daylight finally!! a choir of children sings a loose line over a raw rare groove/disco like house beat. kicks are deep and hard. again theres a lot happening throughout the track making this an adventurous listen. on the flip a more obscure outing, edgy keys, a vocal hookup on a very moving rhythm track, another example of a long spun out theo trip. tip!!

stroke typifies the twisted darkness so prevalent in italian techno right now. constructed from a tight stripped back groove of low-humming bass and booming kicks the track bounces along against a off-kilter backdrop of acid ripped effects. a legend in techno, rino cerrone makes a welcome return to analytic trail with his remix. taking the late night feel of the original and evolving it over a tight shuffling groove the effect is to accentuate the warped vibe and discreet energy.

another show stopper from french outfitles umins. its all about the remixes on this dope three tracker, as home and garden kick things off with a tough, synth heavy retro 80s mix thats a totally new sound for these boys. on the flip brett johnson shows why hes the man, killing the floor with a truly bugged out take on the original thats just got prime time madness written all over it. sounds like a bit of plastikmans spastik in there! icon on point with an essential underground release.

next up on eglo records after the hugely successful vacuum ep by floating points its the debut release of west londons stevie j aka funkineven 1956, featuring hackneys new queen of funk & soul, fatima on vocal duties. 1xtras benji b has already been going mad over it, and the track is slowly building a reputation at a number londons underground jams and warehouse parties. sonically it occupies a similar stratosphere to dam funk, sa ra, bugz in the atitic, dorian concept, joker etc, but with a west london twist and deeply crafted vocal melody.

all the tracks on this double vinyl demonstrate his innovative approach to music, running the full spectrum from soft ambient interludes to the more uptempo beat trickery. accept manages to combine both extremes and is an apt opening track, demonstrating the two faced nature of aardvarcks productions, highly constructed beats and beautiful melodies. taa baa sounds like it emerged straight out of londons co op, though aardvarck has not been to this broken beat mecca. th #1 is pure ambient bliss and followed by the deep spacious beats of dim. steps is based around a seriously crunched up hip- hop break, think domu scrapping with the funkstorung boys. the original version of zom is track 7 (ignore the tracklisting on the cd) whilst the stunning remix by attica blues tony nwachukwu is actually track no. 17. upset is based around deep raw bass, the structure of the track is created with pin point beat work. flight simulator is a silky smooth journey, proving that aardvarcks beats dont have to be broken. the stuttered synchopated bass stabs of th#3 combined with its fearsome breaks push the edge of the nu jazz envelope and gentle is an uptempo number combining the skip of 2 step with smooth german jazz styles - one for the quirky jerky types on the dancefloor. th#6 is another deep ambient soundscape helping to ease the pressure after the frantic percussion of knet. stampot shows aardvarcks ability to counter fearsome rhythms with melancholy chords, the forward flowing synths float the listener over the near chaotic drum programming. finally, the album closes with the weeping strings and treated piano of anders, bizarrely twisted and warped sonics. one beautiful voyage!

played by karotte !!! with his newest ep on wagon repair (ghosts in the ai - wag058), mathew jonson looks to both the past and future to create a stunning release. track 1 - ghosts in the ai - is the first solo production that was made in wagon repairs new berlin studios. finally, in a real place to work, and with a lot of new gear to play with, mathew focuses on evoking both the future and technology to wonderful affect. track 2 - technology - comes from mathews past as it was created around the same time as tracks like octagon came out on iiwii. originally, it was going to be the first cut on his debut album that he was planning to release. on the day that mathew was looking for a b-side track for the ghosts in the ai ep, his brother, nathan (hrdvsion), played it over the phone asking him why he had not released it, as it was one of nathans favourites. it worked much better than the other track that was going to be on here so thanks, hrdvsion. track 3 - the alchemist - comes from mathews involvement this summer producing the music score for the old classic silent film faust, which was screened, complete with cobblestone jazz playing the score live, at the 2009 timewarp festival. the alchemist was written for the scene when faust is working in his laboratory then walks out into the snow to summon the devil to help with his work. a fitting piece indeed!

in a fresh, light and nippy way mr. russell drums us out of the indian summer into the oriental autumn. pipes of pan prance above this cool arab beat and take a rocking guitar line in between. and because germany becomes extremely cold these days, fenou #9 heats up more pressing than its predecessors and warms us on top with a vocal taken from the arabian nights that crackles in our ears. the flip side shows more deepness and blows over a warm breeze of spanish dance air on the guitar. vocals whisper longingly above the drums, engrossed in thought far away at the seaside. with this record autumnal coldness is long forgotten and expelled.

emptyset is a bristol based production project formed by james ginzburg, aka ginz, boss of the multiverse network of labels and paul purgas a longstanding electronic dj/collector and curator of this years we can elude control compilation. their collective agenda has been exploring techno music’s diverse influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed sound design. inspired by the city’s culture of bass lead production as well as the global resurgence of electronic music, the sound has been described as techno meets dubstep folded back onto techno again, a description which is perhaps the most insightful to date. the project owes credit to the classic releases of m-plant, sahko and chain reaction as well as more recent producers such as alva noto, deathprod and burial. emptyset acts as a research project connecting the ideas of a modern dancefloor with experimental approaches to music and its design.

a1) aller retour. indeed we do like it very much, when a tune is like a punch – and this one pushes tremendous. underlaid with a sharp kick later, the strongly-held bass line involving from a small stream to an all-compelling stream. on top we receive a very un-christian boot with some oriental like organ-pipes. what more can you expect. oh by the way- there is actually a river in lower saxony with the same name like the track – however has nothing to do with it. b1) nevermind. indicate left and right over. and then a lob shot instead of a straight shot. this is a little what nevermind feels like. an assault from the deep, with a soft climax rather than with brute force. our recommendation for phasing out after an extensive club night
