songs about the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from arabic sounds, american funk as well as neighboring ethiopia. kamal keila was among the first artist we met in sudan during our two trips to khartoum and omdurman last year. he is one of the key figures of the sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. when we meet kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. each tape included five tracks. one with english lyrics and another with arabic ones. musically you can hear the influence of neighboring ethiopia much more than on other sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to fela and american funk and soul. his lyrics, at least when he sings in english which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. a brave statement in the political climate of sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called shmasha. a note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. both sessions stand as a hearable testament how kamal keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. kamal keilas album is the first in a series of releases covering the sudanese jazz scene on habibi funk. be on the lookout for albums by the scorpions and sharhabeel coming soon.

in 2015, something magical happened. we met a couple of talented young swedes named artur bra&#776,ndstro&#776,m and egil kahlbom who excelled at composing and producing these lighthearted, breezy disco-hued house tracks (or house- hued disco tracks, perhaps) that both fit the aesthetic and character of lph and brought something new into the fold. the result of that first encounter was marathons, a full-length album, their debut to the world, and now, two years later, we re back for the much-anticipated follow-up. rehearsal is a little briefer than its predecessor—it s five tracks—and has a markedly different tone, one that s less about dusty, sun-bleached samples and more about tightly-engineered and delicately-crafted songs. if the first effort was marked by its carefree naivete&#769,, the sophomore effort is, well, something a bit more advanced or, perhaps, rehearsed. what hasn t changed, though, is these guys ability to home in on grooves and coax something trasncednetally hooky, memorable out of them. the five tracks contained here are low-key in attitude but powerful and punchy in approach. they re uniquely juicy, nourishing numbers for mellow hours and fearlessly fun ditties for party hours. lots of love went into the lot of them, and we hope all s you feel when you let them wash over you is that. love

l_cio is a brazilian artist who brings his own flute playing to his music. he has previously collaborated with the likes of portable on the huge hit ‘surrender’ and is a live act who has held residencies at plenty of key clubs in brazil. he’s also toured all over the world from egg london to robert johnson in frankfurt and released on labels like perlon, soul clap records and d.edge. his eight-track album is an emotive affair with deep house grooves embellished with his own spine tingling instrumentals and flute.

after a brief time away from releasing music in 2017 to refresh his ears, essential house artist argy is back with a bang in 2018, as this debut ep on play it say it proves. greek dj and producer argy has been a prolific talent over the last decade plus, releasing a variety of sounds under a number of different aliases. his given name has always been reserved for house and techno, which is classically informed but always infused with the sound of the future. it’s come on key labels like bedrock, bpitch, ibadan, and most recently the martinez brothers’ cuttin’ headz imprint, and has spawned four fantastic full lengths. those releases, along with his storytelling dj sets, have made the these days label boss a much loved and ever-present part of the global underground scene. the excellent title track the way of kings opens up the ep with seven standout minutes of surging house. slick, powerful kicks drive it along as expertly crafted synths bring real drama and tension up top. it’s a tasteful bit of hi-tech soul for the peak of the night and is as essential as the title suggests. switching up the mood is the vibrant los animales, which has a busier, afro tinged groove and tribal percussive energy. lithe synths dart about to add dynamism and movement as vocal chants get you on your toes and the whole thing is sure to make a huge impact in the club. last of all, move like a panther featuring the new yorker in berlin, elbee bad, shows another side to argy. it’s a perfectly raw house cut with plenty of jacking chicago spirit. the drums hit hard, the synths are trippy and the snares force you to move. add in a dark bassline and spoken word mantras and you have a real piece of explosive club dynamite. these are three typically inventive and well-executed tracks from argy that are stuffed with original ideas.

the producer, multi-instrumentalist, dj and record collector gabriel cyr aka teleseen releases 5th album ‘the emotional life of savages via french imprint goldmin music. african rhythms, latin heat and otherworldly electronics collide like neurons, processed through a new york state of mind. the pancontinental sounds are mirrored in his own life, which has oscillated back and forth between various countries. a jazz background combined with a love for house and techno are ingrained in the grooves. also key is the samba, baile funk and mpb that inspired him while living in rio de janeiro, plus the sounds he reabsorbed on returning to nycs club scene.

following on from the release of fba21 collected works 1996 -2017, which was released november 2017 matthew puffett decided to wrap up the project, with a handpicked selection of artists to remix key tracks from the compilation. amongst these figures are some significant influences on puffett s early years the set includes kirk degiorgio, whose reworking of ‘cross dissolve’ reimagines the track in full machine mode, serving up a slab of driving techno for the main room.

mr bongo presents the first 12inch in a series of remix packages curated from ebo taylors brand new album yen ara. the 81-year-old composer, arranger, guitarist and vocalist has been a key figure in the evolving afro-funk sound since the seventies, working with the likes of apagya show band, ck mann and pat thomas. this 12inch combines three of the best remixers in the business - the legendary ron trent, west coast talent flako, and disco connoisseur nick the record. you will hear the high-energy afrobeat, sweet highlife, jazz and konkoma influences that ebo is famous for, and the remixes have contributed their disco pulse, house groove, and hard-hitting percussive edge to the tracks.

fans of the berlin based nils frahm are by now familiar with his beguiling live shows where more often than not fellow touring artists are encouraged to join frahm on stage – the likes of rachel grimes, rob lowe of balmorhea as well as label colleagues peter broderick and Ólafur arnalds have all obliged with fascinating results. it will come as no surprise then that nils frahm, an accomplished composer and producer who signed to erased tapes in 2009, has extended his collaborative live musings to encompass the recording studio, working for the first time with noted cellist and fellow berliner anne müller to produce 7fingers.
with their first collective release frahm and müller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an intoxicating and delicious collection of songs. primarily a pianist nils frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase müller on cello. anne müller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the wolf-ferrari-ensemble, phillip boa and recent tours with agnes obel, proves an amp musical partner for frahm.

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks. »applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible. layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance. rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the ems studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«. the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular av performances.

colin potter is a sound engineer and musician currently based in london. he has worked within the fields of electronic and experimental music for over 35 years, collaborating with the likes of current 93, the hafler trio, organum, andrew chalk, and most notably as a key part of nurse with wound alongside steven stapleton. he started the esteemed icr (integrated circuit recordings) label in 1981 releasing a clutch of wonderful home recordings of his own, over half a dozen small run cassette only releases. ‘the where house?’ was recorded in 1981 at ic studio, a converted wash house in sutton on the forest in north yorkshire. the album was self-released on cassette that same year via icr. this expanded double lp edition features all 13 tracks from the original tape on vinyl for the first time plus 4 bonus tracks. ‘the where house?’ is a prime example of early uk post-punk/industrial electronic music. “combining dub, electro, and krautrock rhythms with psychedelic, kosmische noise in multiple mutations ranging from almost pop-wise songcraft to horizon-scanning motorik flights,” says boomkat. most of the damage was done by colin using guitars, synths, sequencers, drum machines, percussion, and modified toy keyboards with fairly primitive 4-track recording equipment. he was assisted on some of the tracks by stephan jadd-parry (guitar, percussions), jon caffery (guitar, bass, e-bow, percussion) and nick jackson (synth). all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is sleeved in a replica of the original cassette artwork by jonathan coleclough. every copy includes a double sided postcard insert with notes from colin.

repress !! artwork (real name arthur smith) launches his own label ‘unfinished records’ with the release of ‘let go of this acid’. described by smith as his “not so secret weapon”, ‘let go of this acid’ has been a staple in discerning dj sets, radio sessions and live streams for near on 18 months. the vinyl release includes the tracks ‘let go of this acid’ and acid lines , and comes with a sheet of acid artwork. a londoner through and through, artwork is a man who has been a key part of some of the capital’s most pivotal music scenes in the last two decades.

when it comes to soulful house, detroit native alton miller is about as ingrained as it gets. peacefrog, planet e, moods & grooves, mahogani and sound signature have all endorsed his talents and with an album looming later in the year, waella s choice sow the seeds with all things good. club music for the sensitive souls, with some arresting spoken word poetry and even a broken beat deviation. all things good is the fourth release from london label waella s choice, following hanna, ranger and the london on key compilation.

radio slave’s colossal ‘the revenge’ track now gets expert remix treatment from klasse wrecks label head luca lozano. luca has also released on the likes of optimo, sex tags ufo and unknown to the unknown and brings a raw, acid tinged sound to his beats. as a performer lozano’s versatile dj sets span between raw house, cosmic disco and dynamic breakbeat selections, which is why he’s become a regular at key clubs across europe and tasteful festivals like houghton. his ‘how bow dis’ remix’ is solid and features wild old school flavours in its huge drum breaks, a monstrous bassline and dark filtered vocals. it bangs for seven superbly heavy minutes with plenty of twists and turns along the way, and will transform any club or warehouse into a writhing, sweaty mass in seconds. on the flip, his ‘how bow dah’’ version is based around elastic drums and rumbling bass while a loose synth line darts about up top. some distant synths bring a sense of serenity to the madness and so despite the physical impact of this one, it also has real emotion to it.

bugs is aus label owner will sauls first solo ep in over 4 years and follows his inaugural release on new aus compilation series, inside out. heres will on the a side. bugs is inspired as much by dancing at plastic people/co-op to the bugz in the attic as is it is by carl craigs innerzone orchestra track bugs in the bass bin. hopefully i bring my own twist to these key influences. the map room tumbles with big, swinging drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout before matt karmill takes bugs off on a linear dubbed out excursion to complete the package.

through the years intacto records became a household name. the label was founded in amsterdam in 2004 under the collaborative genius of shinedoe and 2000 and one. it was launched as a platform for the by then strongly emerging amsterdam scene supporting a pack of local artists shaping a fresh distinctive sound which took over the electronic scene by storm. intactos defining sound included many styles and its catalogue is a melting pot of influences of which house and techno are the key elements. after running intacto records successfully for 14 years, shinedoe and 2000 and one have joined forces on their very first collaborative release. a ten year old unreleased 2000 and one track world of acid have been played out by shinedoe for years and received ecstatic feedback from the clubbing crowds. convincing him to release this timeless tune to scorch the dancefloors worldwide, shinedoe was inspired to do a remix. in return 2000 and one remixed her track acidploitation which she recently produced. acidploitation ep is the culmination of two dutch legends, defining their brilliant take on music once again

real name takeshi fukushima, takecha has been a key figure within japan’s electronic music scene for decades and belongs to the same pioneering crew as soichi terada and shinichiro yokota. now in his mid- fifties, ‘deep soundscapes’ is an album encompassing fukushima’s sound with every track written by the producer between 1990 and 2013. intricate percussion and crystalline chords set the tone in ‘deep drive’ before a funky bassline joins serene synths in ‘midnight things’. appearing in soichi terada’s mix for resident advisor (under its promo title ‘deep loop c’), ‘gradual atmosphere’ is comprised of a galloping beat and saccharine chimes, ‘factory 141’ sees takecha demonstrate a murkier aesthetic, whilst ‘rhodes detox’ is a definitive example of takecha’s flair for expertly balancing elements within his productions. an homage to shufflepuck cafe&#769,,, an old mac plus video game takecha would play on a black and white 9- inch monitor back in the day, ‘shufflepuck’ blends ghostly melodies with clicks, whirrs and pops. ‘calm imagination’ is a poignant affair from start to finish with its hypnotising atmosphere, contrasting to the more up-tempo ‘warm rondo’ with its soulful keys and purring low-end. tying it all together, ‘genuine innocence’ is a cut that takecha made two versions of, one with a solo from a pianist and another with more emphasis on the beat, the latter of which appears on this album.-

trias#002 is the successor of the debut ep by tom sue on trias records, available as a limited vinyl edition with risograph prints. the melodic main track >black oak< was produced by tom sue for the sinister short film >schwarz< by felix kruis. it features strong lead vocals by n!klas and chants by the movie actors. the dark atmosphere of the short film is picked up by the melancholic low key techno tracks >amberay< and >ceres<. the ep finishes with the banging remix of >black oak< by der schmeisser, der tietz and der foerkerich, ready to hit the clubs.

the saqqara ep is a multilayered, sonic canvas from the mind of chris barratt, as he launches his new alias, baratt, for life and death. fine brushstrokes move from all areas of his musical hideout, spreading over five, varied, aural sculptures, each one warping and weaving on its own cosmic trajectory. pooling from key aspects of his eagles & butterflies project, barratt induces new musical shades, hinting at moments of disco and funk, through a lens of psychedelia. the title track is a late-night floor-filler - a bold yet uniquely personal necropolis built from riveting delays and arpeggiators. time bending sees dj tennis join in, stepping up with his trademark, rough around the edges production aesthetic, en route to unknown destinations. barratt hones-in on a confident, stripped-down style on khaos - rhythm versus melody just in time for festival season. 1983 soundtracks a ride to utopia on a rocket-fueled vespa, leading to collider, the land of un-quantised madness, where the most treasured of synthesisers live amongst their drum machine counterparts. flowing yet incredibly interconnected, saqqara is best interpreted as a mini artist album - the first of many barratt offerings.

the sixth release from the london-based sugarhouse imprint sees tekboys (label heads maurice jnr, jamie paul and seb miguel) bring forth a 4-tracker built for the floor. it’s already seen support from the likes of alex nut, bradley zero and bicep, amongst others, and looks primed to set alight basements and beach stages alike this summer. originating in 2015 with the much loved ‘magic mountain ep’ this low key, diy label has quietly been releasing hit after hit. alongside their much-coveted white label imprint ‘bouncin’, the guys from sugarhouse have picked up an impressive fanbase including bradley zero, alex nut, four tet, patrice scott, prosumer, kai alce and hunee to name just a few.

mihai popescu kicks off a new label, steppin motion records, with two of his own brilliant tracks. the romanian artist has been a key part of the scene since 2012, releasing on labels like soulsity, rora and bass culture. he has a slick electronic sound that is here for all to here on these two new cuts.

steppin motion is a record label based in paris and managed by swoop. it aims to promote music as an art, as something beautiful that gets your body and soul in motion. this first ep is in two parts, showcasing both sides of the label: the first part is the most dance oriented, whereas the second part will be more soul / beauty oriented. the amazing artwork comes from vesod, who is an italian street-artist painter from turin.

selfsuficient is first and is ten minutes of slippery house music with lovely chords and melodies all making for a warm and infectious groove. it is colourful, loose and rhythmic stuff that oozes a futuristic sense of soul. neasteptat is deeper, with rubbery drums and woodpecker like sounds all weaving round each other to cast a spell on those who hear it.

these are two terrific tracks that connoisseurs of minimal house are going to lap up.

known for releases on labels like overall music, innercircle and frole records, back to basics regular barnsley begins 2018 by returning to his vessel records imprint with big move ep . consisting of two low-slung originals, the release also includes remixes from bass culture founder d julz and cabinet records bosses cabdrivers. a compelling groove lays the foundation of time whilst quivering synths operate throughout, leading into d julz s remix that twists the original into a moody roller with tightly executed 808s at its core. forgiveness starts with clanking percussion as melodies add to the heightening atmosphere, while the cabdrivers remix takes the key elements of the original and plays with the harmonies to make them coarser.

hugo manuel is better known by his musical alias chad valley. a product of oxford’s prolific creative community, chad valley has amassed a catalogue that spans four studio releases, numerous collaborations and dozens of remixes. his 2010 debut — a self-titled exploration in swirling synths and sunburnt melodies — laid the groundwork for 2011’s equatorial ultravox, which gave his downtempo productions a decidedly more pop-leaning twist. it was with equatorial ultravox, and his 2013 album young hunger, that chad valley’s profile sprung forward, strengthened by a string of key touring slots supporting the likes of erasure, chvrches, active child and passion pit, and by his collaborations with el perro del mar, glasser, totally enormous extinct dinosaurs and twin shadow. after releasing 2015 s sparkling entirely new blue and continued touring extensively, as he now prepares to release his third full-length album in 2018. imaginary music includes the previously released singles “up again” and “la in august,” both of which bolster one of the strongest batches of material chad valley has yet delivered. the vinyl release includes a download code.

secretive frenchman ersatz olfolks follows fine appearances on conforce’s transcendent records and georgian imprint bassiani with an ep of clinical techno aberrations for low-key bristol label tutamen.

as a logical next step after big crown’s excellent (and sunny-approved) mr. brown eyed soul compilation from september, the label has started digging into the vaults of sunny’s key-loc records label to unearth some legit soul classics – which are hard to find even in san antonio, and clean originals will cost you a pretty penny if you ever luck into one. the album has been remastered and includes original album art.
the band is tight, the sound is honest, the vocals are dusky and deep, and the album is an undeniable soul and texas music classic, ready to be discovered by a whole new generation of music fans. dive in and be ready for a permasmile, thanks to that patented sunny sound.

vienna-based producer sam irl popped up on our radar a couple of years ago following stellar releases on jazz & milk, but honestly we should have been paying far closer attention as this guy has been making the best crunchy, mpc-driven jazz-infused house music dating right back to 2006. ep’s for s3a’s sampling as an art and collaborative projects with patrick pulsinger and dusty have won him fans including gilles peterson (leading to a release on brownswood), mr scruff and session victim amongst many others. his live sets have also seen him perform at the hallowed grounds of panorama bar and sonar festival. for his debut ep here on freerange sam has delivered four tracks which perfectly showcase his production skills and knowledge of what makes a dance floor tick, kicking off with title track rain technique. quirky keys and a playful groove help build a warm and charming vibe, light and bouncy yet deep and driving enough to get your dance on to. trust follows with loping, lopsided percussion forming the basis of the groove, sparse rhodes pads punctuating the beat and adding just the right musical element to the mix without cluttering the beats or compromising the sense of space. flipping over we have all thats left which sees sam utilising his trusted tr606 for some lovely snappy snares and sizzling hihats. chiming arpeggios join the repeating chord riff creating another simple yet uplifting and playful mood which cant fail to get under your skin. closing the ep we have a wonky, shuffling house track which once again shows sam proving less is more, sampling his key elements into the mpc and jamming out the arrangement in a live and improvised way which brings a fresh, somewhat naive appeal to the production.

wave stu might just be the platonic ideal of icy, emotionally fraught synth-pop. on his debut release for origin peoples, stockholm-based musician michel isorinne puts paragons of this style like orchestral manoeuvres in e dark in his slipstream. laced with spoken-word passages from films and television shows, wave stu weaves a loose tale about the nature of time, physics, and mortality that can be summarized by the key phrase, uttered by a woman scientist somewhere throughout the album, magic is in the molecules.

after a handful of singles that instantly became favourites for djs including bicep, scuba and laurent garnier, london-duo athlete whippet deliver their 12” debut. “hands only” is a balmy, nonchalant yet carefully crafted house gem incorporating striking live performance.
the record was welcomed with open arms by key tastemakers such as xlr8r (“shimmering and seductive”), resident advisor and complex (“heaven sent for djs”). taking on board fellow producers max graef and seb wildblood, “hands only” is a refreshing and effortless 5-tracker following their recent release on exploited records.

the next yoshitoshi classic is here and it s a heavy one - dino lenny s -i feel stereo.- anyone on the scene in 2001, when this monster tune was originally released, remembers its pulsing rhythms and ear-catching vocal hook. seventeen years later, -i feel stereo- is back with three remixes from some of the finest artists around. steve lawler (working here as lawler) has crafted a badass, bassline-driven house track that pummels with all the energy of the original. steve continues his reign as as key innovator in dance music, modernizing this classic with unquestionable finesse. the red axes boys deliver their silky smooth brand of minimal house with a variety of distorted arpeggio riffs, futuristic chimes, and other left-field sounds that make their remix truly unique. it s another ace production from the israeli duo. last but certainly not least, up-and-comer frankyeffe, who delivered the goods on his collaborative splitting minds ep with loco & jam last fall, serves up some impeccably produced techno for big, loud rooms. the italian phenom s mix is absolute savagery. of course, it wouldn t be a yoshi classic pack without a remastered original mix.

three years on from 01, this tenth cassette release & the seventh volume of the oddities compilation series brings another four newcomers to low-key bristol outfit, tutamen. joel john, moní moní & half nelson follow stellar appearances across the technosphere to bless us with their wares, and define jocular presents an intriguing debut appearance.
