the first release from sign bit zero features two powerful edits from mick wills. giving new life to the track, ‘center’ by ale mania, a san diego based band, the cuts here contain wholly new structures with a greater focus on the oppressive yet powerful vocal parts and the uplifting string section. by extending the (acoustic) drum track and giving it the groove and strength we have come to associate with his edits, mick has created for us a unique take on the new wave / dark wave genres – ideal for any dj who wants to showcase this sound in a club-focussed context. ‘center’ originally appeared on the ep, ‘a, who sings that beat?’ on volar records and was written by andrew montoya, who has kindly granted us the permission to present this record to you all.

there is significantly more than a scintilla of exuberance on cosmin trg’s first 2016 venture on his own fizic imprint. number four in the series further explores the dense textures present on last year siiiep, but largely dispenses with the ennui in favour of a different discourse. oblic offers a brisk groove that ebbs and flows among graphite-thin layers of percussion and sonic debris. the recurring dust sample amplifies the vigorous rhythmic attributes of the track, rendering it withprime dance floor capabilities. serpenti takes distant sparkles of mutant chimes, wraps them around the relentless pulse of thudding kick drum and soaks everything in static. granules and grit are extracted from circuitry with a focus on razor sharp sound system efficiency. produced by cosmin trg, transformed by matt colton at alchemy mastering, with original artwork from cosmin himself.

the next installment on aus music sees the return of a relatively new addition to the roster rob glassett aka fold. throughout previous 12inches on manmakemusic and electric minds and on his outstanding netflix & chill debut for aus last year - fold has laced together dusty house grooves built with a classic approach to sampling funk, disco and soul records. next up - his lennys jam ep starts up with a dub techno groove built with delayed and panned stabs and sharp, pacy drums. rosie lea lays out a rich and sunny groove as a playful sample filters into focus over deftly treated drum kit samples and a buoyant bass line. tracksuits and tennis shoes then follows up with a no-nonsene party jam a short funk link is set over a booming kick that closes up a nicely varied package.

delsin records welcomes back dennis van gemert aka area forty_one for a second ep on the label. it is a second part to the nocturnal passions series started back in 2013, and come five years after his first ever release, which was on ann aimee in 2011, once again fusing ambient with techno, downtempo and electro. nocturnal passions part 2 is seven minutes of slithering electro funk. full of twinkling keys and spaced out chords, it has rugged bass and bumpy drums all making you want to move. voyage is then a raw, beat driven yet still brilliantly serene affair with angelic chords, consolation is a comforting, mid tempo tumble through the galaxy with soft focus, rippling melodies and gentle churning kicks and orbiting is a suspensory, fully ambient track that sounds like a slow journey up to heaven. this is teary eyed, emotive stuff that comes from another world entirely.

zackey force funk was born into this wild world in tucson, az in 1974. in and out of prison since the age of 17, zff began producing on pirated software his brother gave to him once he had given up a life of crime to focus on writing tunes and raising his family. first discovered by kutmah back in the golden era of myspace, zackey’s signature “force funk sound” swiftly grabbed the attention of a number of formidable producers. as these tunes were scattered across various labels, finding their homes on their respective collaborator’s projects, zff continued to hone his style, delving deeper into the psychedelic future funk realm of which he has created for himself. the fruits of his discipline all add up to “electron don” hnr52 a 15-track collection of early productions that serves as the initial transmission of a fantastical mind that has many more stories to tell. “electron don” gathers together various unreleased and classic tracks recorded by zackey force funk circa 2009-2011 in tucson, az. included here are a treasure-trove of classic productions by the electron don himself, as well as tracks by luminaries salva, mike gao, lorn, jellphonic, cupp cave, crimekillz, mark lowe and paolo xz.

italian melody makers modular project reveal their debut ep, a nature-dubbed and organic five track effort merging tech house and electronica. the endeavor kicks off with the nostalgy laden yet upbeat leaf, whose steady bassline gives leeway to a dreamy developing, synth lined harmony. aptly entitled into the woods, the second track goes into deep territory via distorted synths, a wave-reminiscent element that remains its central focus til the very last sequence. the woodlandish journey fully unfolds at the third track, a contrastingly darker ...

2015 has been a busy year for soul intent. relocating from nottingham to bromley, releasing -the fruit club ep- on lossless in march, his -wanna fight ep- dropped on klute s commercial suicide in august, the sci-fi themed -replicant- marked lossless music s first digital only release in october and his -late night sleaze ep- has been awarded mixmag s dnb tune of the month (nov 15 issue). on top of all this alex is about to launch two (yes two!!) sub-labels for lossless music. the first of these is exkursions. exkursions will cater for the deeper, more experimental side of dnb & electronic music. though concentrating it s tempo focus around the 170 mark exkursions will also be taking explorations down into slower soundscapes. the first release is a 3 tracker from soul intent and the tracks have already turned the heads of respected selectors including doc scott, presha, loxy and logistics. we won t say much for than that, we ll let the music do the talking.

andre crom returns to off with a deep and moody piece of house music. based on a layer of solid drums and a warm bassline, the track evolves with a gliding synth hook and bell theme, topped by a haunting vocal featuring bramwell. berlins rising star jonas saalbach delivers a spacy interpretation, altering the original theme and introducing new synth layers. finally, london-based ashwort adds a toolish deep techno remix, only using fragments of the vocal to give more focus to the groove.

one year has passed since the pilotwings’ first output « agorespace ». expectations went further in 2015 as they contributed to the rave-ish j-zbel project. the pair is now back on bfdm with another ode to rurality and old-fashioned analogue. including 4 tracks, « molitor 71 » goes deeper into retrofuturist nostalgia and bucolic mood. a1 31 septembre (on va tout niker) introduces full-on panflute melodies and uplifting korg exotica. as the trancy chicago dream fades out, a2 les invasions babar unveils its weird combo of electro beats and massive patrick cowley-esque synths. unplanned bass moves lead this jam while an undertaking voice calls for no less than « the greatest experience of your life ». things settle down on the nocturnal b1 congo libre. focus on breakbeats and sophisticated rhythms evokes trance beats, while sparkling synths emerge from everywhere. the ep ends up with a floating ambient piece called buruganda ouverture and designed for the listener to rediscover the meaning of his existence. molitor will give you faith in humanity and flutes again.

disco tools 1° moods is the first ep of sampling moods records label. in this first release eddie lays down the defining ingredients of his label: disco-funk samples, distinct rhythms and recordings on tape. assisted by his mentors, eddie sets out to make his mad passion for a particular music (…classics from the paradise garage, the loft sounds and the disco-funk hits) amalgamate with a galvanising rhythmic construction, which is raw and rough.
as a piece of art that touches our mood, sam try to make us rediscover the power and love of the original classics, through the continuous repetition of the samples. the label focus on a specific musical need and want to offer a contemporary garage house, raw and essential interpretation of some rare groove hits and other disco classics. the choice to add only rhythmical scores is due to enhance and exploit the sample itself.

the vinyl factory has teamed up with french label zone for another rugged techno four tracker, this time from close associate and well established production talent maelstrom. though his name suggests total chaos, maelstroms music belies intention, focus and precision. often marked as exciting newcomer to french techno, maelstrom has actually been making music for over fifteen years. with a cryptic history of aliases and side projects, illegal raves thrown in warehouses and fields and basements, the artist has really come into his own under this moniker. the optics ep showcases metallic techno, acid house, industrial noise and stark ambient sounds, forging smokey machine music for those with a penchant for post punk and a soft spot for the spikier end of the techno spectrum.

the analog music project is a musical act that focus on building a coherent sound stage using only vintage musical instruments. its debut album odyssey features seven original themes, as well as covers from artists such as krafwerk, roy ayres and vangelis.  from electro-bossa to cosmic-swing, the projects revives and reinvents classic genres giving them a modern analog twist. when listening to odyssey, which was developed over two years of hard work, one can hear a fine selection  of exquisite musical instruments.

the imogen label launched back in september with a pair of ilija rudman remixes of london acid jazz favourite brand new heavies. this second release sees them change tack somewhat, adopting an archival focus to dig out two tracks by croatian hero ilan kabiljo. known mostly for his 90s work, kabiljo comes from legendary croatian music stock - his father was composer and musician alfons alfi kabiljo. this expression 12inch sees imogen dig through the ilan archives for two rare and unreleased tracks records in 1990, with a side cut cool nights a supple midnight saunter through jazz funk that highlights kabiljo s compositional class. golden days is just as good as sounds like a loving homage to the 80s.

2015 has been the year that moon harbour turned 15, but rather than focus on the past, matthias tanzmann s label has continued to serve up fresh future sounds. the next artist to do so is lewis boardman, a long time uk talent who has released on a clutch of fine labels in his time.

uk house veteran phil asher arrives on rekids with the latest project in his storied career, a collaboration with emergent london poet & musician james massiah. having chanced upon him a performance during a fiona bevan presents night at dalstons servants jazz quarters, asher immediately approached massiah about a possible collaboration: as soon as i heard james i knew i had to work with him. his poetry is infectious, textured & interesting. time & space took years to imagine but 25 minutes to write. it took james approximately the same amount of time to lay his poem down. asher approached matt edwards with the results, and the time & space ep was confirmed for release on rekids: two original cuts of futuristic house emboldened by massiahs electrifying street poetry, and a reprise version of the title track which steps away from the dancefloor to bring the lyrical content into sharper focus

as benedikt rugar s superbly illustrated cover art for the recent cocktail d amore compilation nothing matters when we re dancing proved, the berlin collective proudly celebrate their status as a forum for berlin s gay community to fully express themselves. with no releases on the label since that compilation arrived in january, discodromo and dj boris have now unveiled a sister operation with a focus on edits under the wonderful name cockring d amore. the debut release features contributions from label regular massimiliano pagliara, the unheralded trent and founders discodromo.

eleve welcomes leonid into the family with otherworld ep. the madrid-based irish producer has deployed during the last years some of the finest records of the house panorama, for labels such as sistrum, dolly or more recently freebeat. this record fits perfectly in the red series started in eleve 02 by dj f and jose rico, with the focus on the dancefloor. leonid brings a three-track ep whose amazing sound and percussion, trademark basslines and detroitish leads and pads promise to transport many dancers to other worlds. a side starts with xana, an esoteric house excursion with a mechanical edge. next track is púca, in the spirit of his deepest previous work with a characteristic syncopated bassline. b side long track is embarr, an adventurous imagination trip across the sea, classic leonid elements such relentless percussion and heavy bassline meets acid elements to create a one-way ticket to universal sub-conscience.
