acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

cvn is the work of japanese electronic artist and core member of the now defunct synth punk duo ‘jesse ruins’ -nobuyuki sakuma. a work that is distinctly sci-fi in it’s intention, ‘exposure’ is comprised of six tracks that veer from battered & scorched weightless warfare workouts to bright & melodic mutant electro to desolate and longing fragments of cracked ambience.

london based punk duo black volume are not easy to classify. their delirious industrial post punk sounds at times like proto house and at times becomes some sort of mutant electro. their b series sound is made of a conglomerate of filthy percussions, unexpected samples and something with the appearance of melody, with a weirdly addictive result. black rubber is james brown wearing black leather at 40ºc (in the shade) while suffering a mental breakdown. excentric melodies sliding down rhythmic dislexia. negative return blooms from an improvised beat with no traceable sequence, on top of which we find rubbery synth lines, creamy interferences and mysterious sampling, everything sounds like melting from old vhs footage with the future we enter a romantic dystopia. sensual and passionate but equally crunchy, it rises up through cheap calculator arpeggios, pitched vocals and obsessive bass lines. streetfight evoques a desolate landscape, devastated and radioactive. distant echoes from an extinguished human race that left behind only majestic rusty ruins.

high mobility weapons unit continues its exploration, entering an unknown solar system and landing on a desolate mining planet. the counter rockets ep is the second release on the imprint, drawing influences from heavier, lo-fi territories, whilst still maintaining hmwu s characteristic space techno sound. the a-side starts off with the title track, counter rockets , which is a dj tool that combines functional bleeps with machine processed percussion. a2 serves up abandoned interstellar tomb , a fusion of atmospheric deep space bass and jacking drum patterns. on the b-side, deep sea deposit kicks things off with a poly-woven synth line that contorts and shifts throughout the track. finally, excavation site rolls along with its muted melodies and haunting fx, all built above a floor of sub-bass.

“volna” is an uncompromising and unadulterated approach to techno. the ominous “olga” intertwines desolate synthpads with a raw acid sound while the metallic abrasiveness of “drawner” constitutes a glowing tribute to industrial music. “signal” is a more aerial iteration of infinite fields’ techno with its chimerical melodies.

a new four track ep by hexagon aka conforce on his own imprint. doing what he does best. making deep imaginary techno music with otherworldly authentic atmospheres without any concessions. the title track sucks you into desolate interstellar territories paying hommage to 606 rhythms with emotive strings on top that determine the total atmosphere of this killer advanced electro cut. human meets machine in it s purest form. pitch black leans on accurate programmed heavy broken percussive patterns and is the most functional track of the ep. functional but it s haunting atmosphere lifts this to a different dimension. continuum dives deeper into sonic territory with a mysterious stealth missional vibe caused by it s unpredictable sparkling crispy effects and mysterious pads. systematic repetition leans on pulsating modular bleeps and dubby basses and is the most techno orientated cut of the whole ep. it wouldn t be a conforce record if there weren t any strings and pads attached to it.

tom demac tears down the gazelle twin original compositions and rebuilds them with feverish candor. *belly of the beast* pounds hard with rubbery percussion and rattling hats like chains, the gazelle twin chants her mantra *i ll beat them all at their own game…* demacs padded cell like production is most definitely some of the best work we have heard him do to date, and this dark sound aesthetic spills into his take on *guts*. like an electro take on a john carpenter score, demac carves out a futuristic and desolate take on gazelle twins celebration of urge resistance and taking pleasure in the complexity of the mind.

while their sporadic appearance remains a frustration, it s hard to find fault with boe recordings halal prepared series of eps. this third installment of the series, which lands 12 months after it s predecessor, contains another quarter of high quality deep house jams. the real highlights - to our ears, at least - are the two tracks that doff a cap to classic detroit techno, whilst keeping their feet firmly rooted in deep house. both -star struck- by chicago deep and havantepe s -plane waves- capture the retro-futurist spirit and stargazing electronics associated with the motor city perfectly. elsewhere, keep an eye out for taelue s -desolate dreams-, which offers a bittersweet trip into ultra-deep house territory.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.
