next up on francis harriss newly-founded record label kingdoms comes something very special from brooklyn-based film composer, songwriter, producer and performer leah lazonick. movimenti della luna doro (movements of the moon of gold translated from italian) is a four-track ep from one of the most exciting musicians and performers around - a beautiful quartet of contemporary classical music with a twist. lazonick is something of a polymath, having composed and conducted orchestral and electronic scores for short films and commercials as well as being a classically-trained pianist. lazonick is also a connoisseur of analog synths and vintage drum machines, and will release a second ep focussing on these passions during the course of 2018. here we are treated to three luscious works for piano and string quartet, written for a one-off performance at studio off interarts, an art gallery in montreal. the piece was performed in a forest-like immersive environment, and was originally called in a forest (a piece in three movements). lazonick performed the piano parts along with a string quartet she had assembled for the performance/recording. lazonick explains: as opposed to most of the other songs/compositions i have written, i have no concrete sentimental story behind writing this piece. the motivation, inspiration and overall idea behind composing it was of a more technical nature, attempting to relay the music in my head at its purest form, without any compromises, by primarily making use of melodic and harmonic dissonances whilst still keeping the content captivating, musical and continuous.

justin robertson’s deadstock 33s released an acclaimed album in 2015, ‘everything is turbulence’, picking up plaudits from leading press, djs and music fans alike. now the label behind the lp, skint records, offers up the first batch of fascinating remixes from a broad array of dance music talents. running back boss gerd jansen, techno titan oliver deutschmann and argentinian house heroes (& vocal collaborators) dj pareja take on ‘metal taste’ and ‘bajo la luna’ with stunning results.

the second part in the hudd traxx 10th anniversary *now & then* compilation sees tracks from luna city express, sek, iz & diz and rick wade. berlin duo luna city express serve up a lush deep house groove that builds throughout the track, and will bring a smile to the faces of those who follow them on their beloved moon habour recordings. sek uses slick beats, trippy leads, a driving bassline and some *thug life* vocals to ensure this one has future classic written all over it. go back in time (to 2006 to be precise) on the then side to find iz & dizs *happy*. the words epic & journey are often misused in music but both can be mentioned about this track. it had devastating effect on first release and is set to do the same again nearly 10 years later. rick wade closes things out in fine style to fly the detroit flag on an all chicago / detroit side.

>the musical styles on moon harbour inhouse vol. 4< range from the deep house of luna city express and ekkohaus to the reduced groovy tech house á la tini & marc antona, andy catana and boris werner and the floor fillers by reboot and dan drastic. in this sense the selection of tracks mirrors the current breadth of styles represented by the label in its 12th year. since the third inhouse compilation, a lot has happened at moon harbour. in addition to the releases of the albums hello from planet earth by luna city express (2009) and paradigm shift by martinez (2010), the tenth anniversary of the label was celebrated with gusto in 2010 complete with the compilation and club tour, ten years of moon harbour. the year 2010 also marked the birth of the monthly moon harbour radio show. luna city express and dan drastic have been taking turns producing this show, which has already had more than 25 editions.

support from andre rozzo, alex jones, so inagawa, jamie jones, matthew styles-harris, laurent garnier, steve lawler, nic fanciulli. luna records is a new uk based label from respected club promoter/ dj/ producer paul bowen, the man behind middlesbroughs infamous >riff raff< events. the label is set to release music from some pretty well established artists with an emphasis on stripped back chunky house music and in that vein the debut single sees the much hailed german producer chris lattner step up get the imprint firing in the right direction. lattner has been djing for the best part of two decades, initially gracing the decks at hannover techno parties before word of his talent spread, seeing him strike out to play across germany. he has hosted a radioshow for australias pulse radio, worked as a booking agent for lessizmore and has had releases on labels such as einmaleins musik and wba. his passion for electronic music has shone through in everything he has done and led him to produce some great records, to which can now be added the luna debut >memory<. this single release kicks off with lattners original of >memory<, a solid tech driven slice of house with heavily effected vocal samples and a simple floor shaking groove. this is understated underground house music at its best, deep chunky and highly effective. first of the two remixes comes from ex-peace division man justin drake, who builds on the vibe of the original, thickening out the drums and layering some heavy filters over the sythn stabs to great effect. a straightforward and highly effective arrangement provides everything that is needed in this excellent reworking. finally we have a remix from bearweasel, who have been providing choice cuts in house music over the last year via labels such as tsuba, supernature, bloop and murmur. for their >lazy dub< they take things back to basics and turn in a slab of deep and dubby house with an emphasis on razor sharp percussion and earth moving bass. this is a superb debut from a label that is sure to become a major fixture in 2010.
