over the clouds, over the palm trees, there’s club paradiso. club paradiso is a mission. this italo-duo comes from rimini, adriatic coast, and brings forth the golden age of the spanking riviera club culture. travelling through time and space with synths and drum machines, they mix the past(a) and the future. it’s not all about nostalgia, it’s the future they like. the new ep titled “panoramica” sexily rides the summer vibe with infectious body-moving rhythms. the ep is an hypnotic and groovy journey that starts off with “batongo”, a tribal and exotic dancefloor banger that will let the sweat out of the listener in zero time. “espresso notte” is filled with organic house grooves, dreamy pads and a synth that tells you a story that could go on and on and on. “gulliver” and “litoraneo” pick up from there and bring the sound scenario down heavy with 70s-80s disco sounds and boogie, transporting mind and body to a warm and mellow planet. “panoramica” reflects perfectly club pradiso’s goal of mixing past and future, an über-cool ep that is both club and disco friendly.

in 1999, the duo of dj t-rock & squashy nice formed in atlanta. squashy nice is an accomplished beats producer, and dj t-rock is a scratch-master responsible for battle records on the likes of bomb hip-hop records, stereo-type, and replicant music trading corp. together they released three party-ready instrumental hip hop albums for new zealand’s why records label. now based from coast-to-coast (squashy nice in new york and dj t-rock in los angeles), the duo has joined the cold busted family for their fourth album, the satisfying seventeen track back to the essence. showcasing the variety and breadth that squashy nices beats and samples and dj t-rocks scratches can provide, the tracks on back to the essence swerve from party rockers to soulful, thoughtful numbers featuring vocals from new zealand vocalist miss glue. among the standouts are the opening hit the breaks, combining harmonica, 60s style fuzz guitar, heavy beats, and some crucial vocal scratches, let them be, with miss glues lovely vocals providing a counterpoint to acoustic guitar cut-ups, and watch the clouds, featuring gentle piano, a loungey string section breakdown, and wistful vocals from squashy nice. back to the essence should be ingested whole, as its plentiful tracks radiate fun, funk, and good vibes. its like a virtual block party dropping down wherever its cuts are playing.

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the “hotlanta soul 4” kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on ‘a love like yours’ were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple’s ‘complain to the clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

folamour represents the present and future sounds of the disco/house hybrid, staying true to the glitterbox sonic philosophy. his tracks share the same production values as the timeless records from classic disco imprints in the late 70s, melodies are super-tightly harmonised, instrumentation is lively and the rhythms are designed purely for dance. ‘the power and the blessing of unity’ is almost a mini album, exploring all the facets of folamour’s sophisticated house and disco tendencies. the title track sparkles with brass stabs and a textbook swinging disco beat, ‘island of recent father’ breaks things down into synthy house goodness, ‘let’s grab some smokes’ channels a more contemporary low-fi sound and bringing it home with ‘home beyond the clouds’, folamour closes with uplifting house hooks and percussion. it’s a real trip.

shadow play, the brand new label owned by parisian artist le loup and his partner pura, drops its second release courtesy of the bossman himself alongside chris carrier. the two men got together in the studio and cooked up some tasty goodness. the first of four tracks on this release is the intergalactic opus phoenix lights , which works off serene pads that transport you out into the cosmos, along with a warm, soothing bassline and electronic chirps and bleeps. research programm (outro) takes us into more obscure realms, as chris carrier and le loup sample a scientific vocal and create a mesmerising bed of sounds underneath it. on the flip we kick off with clouds reflection , another track which features a sample from an old instructional video. this track has minimal composition, with dreamy astral pads, shuffling beats and a grumbling low end. in the second half chris and le loup introduce more twinkling fx, to engage and hypnotise you... to bring the ep to a close we re presented with v-shape , which begins with a layer of clever drum programming aimed straight at the hips. once you re moving get ready for the juicy bassline, and a sultry top end that grips you and gripping progression. the perfect to end an utterly fresh ep..

a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. on my last couple of albums i challenged myself with regard to formats, trying to push the envelope as far as what exactly constitutes a rap record. talking (bleep) and problems were my last two lead singles, both markedly unconventional. i adore both of those songs and i adore both of those albums specifcally for the new creative fulfllment i enjoyed while making them. there’s much more of that to come, but after spending 3 years outside of the box i was left with a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. thats veins. - homeboy sandman

former half of the defunct pitch & hold duo under the banner of which he operated from 2006 to 2011, simon halsberghe steps up on brussels’ very own vlek with his debut solo ep as simon hold. first heard on vlek s 2016 mix for resident advisor as they were appointed label of the month by the high­ranking platform last autumn, maqam bruxelloise reflects the wide­angle beauty and compelling diversity of the belgian capital and its throbbing heart, a city at the confluence of cultures and languages. across a finely­layered interplay of synthetic modulations and intricate polyrhythms, hold lays out a riveting kaleidoscope of pattern­welded textures and prismatic synth motifs played and arranged accordingly to a contemporary interpretation of the traditional arabic maqam system of improvisation the track draws its title from. an ode to brussels all­embracing effervescence. translating as -soft drone- or -pleasant noise-, the gritty dhajij doux then welcomes you into a more disquieting, bipolar audio scenario that evokes the reality of living -in a sometimes difficult and hostile city-. a curiously matching negative of the opener, in this that it taps into the same generous and plural matrix universe as main source of inspiration, but eventually opens on a more nuanced outcome, here hold clearly shows a further abrasive facet of his work: harsh and vibrant, the track may be replete with a lead­heavy amalgam of sizzling bass and jagged drumwork thrown into the furnace, light and hope still manage threading their way through dark clouds and turbulence, slowly but surely turning this rough­hewn stone into a truly haunting gem.

elizabeth merrick-jefferson is one of those artists who seem low-key. theres not a lot of information about her, if any, except for the existence of the first two records and a lone interview. one released in 2013 and the other in 2014. listening to either record tells you her music might be a lot of things, but low-key isnt one of them. powerful and colourful, direct, and with 313 references embedded in its dna, she pulls it off with style. elizabeths third record is no exception. it has found its home on our mothership label, burek. three happiness is tailor-made for the dance floor. it wont leave anyone with a pulse standing. playful synths, wonderful strings, and infectious groove make it impossible to ignore. knowledge revolution is layered and paced, painting a somewhat different picture. melancholy and a sense of mystery envelop this track, whose leitmotif vocal appears just frequently enough to provide insight into the title. the last track of this ep is fittingly titled noctilucent clouds. its a drumless track with a rhythmic main synth counterpointed by sounds which give off the impression of clouds shining through the darkness of winter nights. another amazing release from burek.

jann arrives on pinkman with a soundtrack of breathless panic, an ode to a blighted world of diesel fumes and indifference. rhythms are grizzly, gored and torn. thick chords judder, revving like a clapped-out engine as metal slashes at savaged snares. acid scorn is poured on this inhospitable world, amplified by the haze of distortion that clouds jann s hard and cold vision.

master jazz pianist tenorio jr. aka francisco tenório júnior only recorded this one album, “embalo”, originally released on rge in 1964. rumour has it that he was arrested and thrown in jail (and possibly even murdered) while on tour with toquinho and vinicius de moraes in argentina in 1976. he has not been seen since...

goldmin founder romain lanteaume aka einka meets terrence dixon for a 2nd record which is nothing but a logical suite to the one released last year. this one is probably less deliberately dark but to us the edge was not dark at all, like what we tend to call melancholy isn t obviously a negative feeling. we believe there s no real duality between things and states. there s an incredible amount of degress in between. its always a bit more complex and deeper than the first impression!

fifth interval gather together some of the most forward thinking minds in the dub techno sphere for this various artists ep. those already acquainted with the label will be familiar with the likes of federsen and tomas rubeck, who headed up the first and second releases respectively. they are joined by dub techno luminary brendon moller, aka beat pharmacy and alessandro crimi, for this four tracker of perfectly contrasting arrangements. federsen opens the proceedings with the sunset sequence of bay blues, cascading keys rolling through the gaps in a subtly broken drum arrangement, making for effortless and captivating listening. beat pharmacy contributes his first original material to the label after a brace of remixes last year. showing true mastery of the board, chromed chord stabs are pushed and pulled around the mix in true dubwise style, drifting over a malleable bassline that packs a serious punch. on the flip side, tomas rubeck crafts a tightly woven backdrop of constantly evolving, organic atmospherics and powerful drum work for io, and this muscular workout is perfectly contrasted by the swung grooves and kaleidoscopic synthesis of alessandro crimis fractal clouds, which closes the ep.

paris, 1954. henri-françois rey wrote the thema of the piece la bande à bonnot and asked boris vian to write the songs in order it to become a musical comedy. la bande a bonnot was the name of a french illegal anarchist group. as soon as the piece was played at théâtre du quartier latin, french authorities made it being stopped. musical parts have been lost. 1971, jacques canetti has been told the original handwritten lyrics of the boris vian songs have been found again. jacques canetti asked louis bessières to re create music parts. 1975, jacques canetti released this record with songs being performed by judith magre, yves robert, lucienne vernay, pierre jamet, kim ibarra, maurice barrier & cécile vassort + 2 bonus tracks whose lyrics were suppsoed to be too for the original spectacle.

after an excellent new album “yoyogi park”, our favorite german producers made great remix package. one of the most respectable label giegling artist kettenkraussell made two version. one is dark deep house and one more is electronica style which reminds us jan janelik. our hero roman flugel remix is more uplifting and trippy, this is simply nice for the club. lake people remix is old school electro style but sounds very modern and playful. enjoy!
