matthew herbert and goldsmiths universitys in-house record label nx records presents the latest in their series of experimental electronic vinyl 12-s. nx14x showcases the work of two boundary pushing goldsmiths students: first, uk born and south africa raised composer galina juritz, whose chopped and spliced rnb doused in lush string arrangements enduces a fidgety unease and zero gravity lushness in equal measure. and second, rising dj and producer harry rodger, with two cuts of organic, summery techno that would sound perfectly at home pumping out of the nts radio speakers into a sun-baked gillett square.

rebar, the duo behind the made of concrete label kick off their self titled label. rebar is meant as a space for the artists own sound explorations, aimed at putting forth releases which combines their usual style with cross-boundary composition. rebar 1 sees a versatile three piece assortment with a seemingly common theme. field recordings make ample appearances in rebars work and this release makes no exception: a large part of the elements were recorded in and around train stations of a famous metropolis.

a new adepth audio record featuring canadian rennie foster, including a remix of nomadico (dj dex/underground resistance). the title track witch hazel is a 9 minute long track with no breakdown and a minimal approach to arrangement, with organic elements cycling in and out subtly rather than obviously beginning and ending. a rolling half time, tribal groove drives the power of the track with a haunting vocal sample and layers of percussion creating a heady, polyrhythmic hypnosis on the dance floor. not since rennie s well known devil s water has he presented such an overtly occult offering as this extremely finely crafted ep, and this song represents the initial seduction of the record to the listener very effectively. the second track, navigator, is a drum machine driven workout, again with a polyrhythmic and tribal vibe, this time drenched in a rich, holographic pad that morphs and moves in unexpected ways. minimalistic in presentation, this track is bass heavy and functional for the dj, yet artistic and emotional. the nomadico remix by dj dex of underground resistance takes the elements of witch hazel and re-constructs them in a futuristic style with a more driving kick and molten detroit attitude. a heavier techno approach to the piece, but still intact is the melancholic atmosphere of the original and siren song of the vocal sample. this mix includes a dramatic breakdown and unique arrangement familiar to fans of nomadico s awesome yaxteq label. the last track on the ep is called crossing the boundary is possibly the only track in this style to sample distorted vocals usually associated with black metal, making this a very unique, perhaps polarizing, experiment in sound. evocative of the desolation of deep space and suggestive of sonic dark matter. this track combines rennie s singular approach to dub techno with ambient and drone music and the result is like nothing else currently in existence.

the boundary-pushing colombian group returns to soundway records with another unique album: dreamy psych-folk, blending traditional latin rock with tropicalia, and lush string and choral arrangements. meridian brothers’ sound is a huge palette of influences and inspirations. drawing from traditional latin rock (including colombian, argentinian and mexican) as well as brazilian tropicalia, for this album alvarez incorporates string instruments - in particular the cello, both bowed and plucked - a timbre rarely used in his previous works.

the latest release on francis harris scissor & thread label out of brooklyn is another exercise in deep and meditative atmospheres. the label, comprised of a tight knit collective of multi-faceted composers, vocalists and instrumentalists, always strives to develop new projects based on a shared aesthetic, and this five track ep is both boundary pushing and fully synchronized with the labels approach. with melquiades blue caves melbourne based composer and sound designer alexander albrecht presents his solo debut ep following on from the tidal river album he released as part of the albrecht la’brooy duo. the title track blue caves is a skittering, weightless exploration of space, seemingly built around lush field recordings and fragments of melody developing out of the ether. avlemonas flows from a similar source, but crystallizes around an off kilter rhythm and occasional subby bass, balanced against swooping pads and piano motifs. morning breeze seems to revel in the evocative nature of its title, with hand played percussion backing more wistful, emotive piano sketches and wandering bass notes, before the track settles into a hypnotic groove. label head francis harris provides another take on the track for his re-form version, a more dancefloor aimed excursion that draws deeply from the classic deep house of the new york and detroit masters. ending the relases is patio, which drifts back towards the ambient territories of the opening tracks, with exquisite, understated instrumentation and a melancholic yet elated vibe.

nice price deal !!! indigenous electronic s is a recently launched vinyl only label, seeking to showcase a combination of both known and undiscovered talent. the label s first release is a 4 track ep, by siamak amidi, the creative director of analog room in dubai, as well as a producer, dj and volt music label boss. the ep showcases amidi s experience with the confluence of both analog and digital synthesis. the a side presenting newer material with the b side some of his older unreleased works. -unconditional love- a stripped down affair, deep, dynamic and ethereal without ever losing the focus on the groove with it s tight production. -retro floor vison aspect- takes us further into trippier post 5am territory, also stripped yet with enough going on to keep the senses tantalized, the standout hook to the bassline, swirling micro electronics with a variated jacking high hat, tried and tested. siamak s -tool- is a deep techy driving affair, with light haunting pads above and throughout track with original use of effects on the high end percussion. -you think you know it- is a rolling percussive track that comfortably rides the boundary between house and techno, with well defined low end and sweeping synth pads that once again show s amidi s abilities in the mix down to not swamp the track or dilute the groove. an ep for the dj s dj.

increasing access to new studio technology resulted in this splicing of dub reggae dna with cut-and-paste sampledelia. anticipating the later work of labels such as def jux, wordsound and anticon, this 1985 album paired crack jamaican session musicians such as the roots radics’ drummer style scott (by this point the instrumental leader of dub syndicate) and the congos’ ashanti roy with public image limited’s jah wobble and keith levene, not to mention the restless mixing desk boundary-pushing of producer and de facto member adrian sherwood. a more reggaefied take on the industrial funk sherwood was making with tackhead during the same period, lovers of digidub, outernational sounds and even the wilder reaches of 80s hip-hop will find much to get lost in here

music with soul is back with another boundary-pushing smasher. the unexpected debut from eládio & robinho, a mysterious afro-fuzzed-hair duo from the fourth world that has emerged to explore and expand the inexplicably hesitant relation between the classic rhythms of jamaica and the southern hemisphere of the american continent. “queimando quente” showcases a swinging brazilian-infused heavy-hitting reggae, masterfully painted by the hypnotic sound of a tenor-sax melody and a laid-back cuíca, all recorded in our very own barracao sound studio, under the baton of the unmistakable alex figueira of fumaça preta and conjunto papa upa.
