using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.

finnish techno icon mono junk aka kim rapatti joins forces with berlin based freestyle man aka klas sasse lindblad, known for his productions on classic labels like sähkö and moodmusic. pata ep starts with the hard hitting techno title ‘not a love story’, haunting vocals, simple synthline, slicing percussion and deep bassdrum, all u need to make an effect, this must be heard in a big sound system. following with ‘need your lovin’ the ep takes a more electro approach, mesmerising love story with jupiter-8 bassline and 808 beats accompanied with vocals on this track too by mr rapatti. the ep ends with ‘stella polaris’, a production which started as a jam in 2007 in berlin at sasse’s blackhead studios and was finished 10 years later in 2017 in the same location. reminiscing of early 90s electronica time when everything was pure and gold and when these fellows also were starting their careers. ‘stella polaris’ leaves no one cold with emotional themes of analog synthesis and depth of the bass.

i discovered benoit b through his own label - banlieue records. he’s part of a new breed of young french producers who make music without any hang-ups and that are inspired by the entire history of house and techno and everything in-between. i liked the combination of club beats with a deep, super melodic approach. the 6 tracks featured here almost make up an entire album that reflects benoit’s skills and sense of production. everything is here -from ambient experiments to heavyweight club tracks and beyond. here, bear witness to the new sound of france (even though he lives in berlin!)

it’s hard to imagine being at the cutting edge of electronic dance music for over three decades, and never resorting to cliché or tired gimmicks in order to create unique and forward thinking music, but matthew herbert is still channelling original and thought provoking ideas into his projects all these years later. via his accidental record label, he has always excelled at left of centre productions, and through a variety of genre aliases (including doctor rockit, wishmountain and the matthew herbert big band), his imagination has always run wild, resulting in an infectious catalogue of music over the years. “brand new love-, featuring the vocals of rising star, zilla, finds herbert creating a dense and dramatic bass heavy cut. a steppers beat, utilizing herbert’s trademark sampling techniques, it’s a killer cut with sweeping cinematic qualities that sounds head and shoulders ahead of the rest. special request, the jungle heavy arm of paul woolford’s many recording talents, is enlisted to put his breakbeat spin on the original, and turns in an absolutely lethal version, choppy breaks, spinbacks and booming subs come with intent, whilst a sumptuous string arrangement accompanies zilla’s vocal for a truly uplifting spirit. “the peacock-, with its loose beats and opaque stabs, rolls along with its industrial undertones and ravey motif, discordant at times but a truly hypnotizing but in the finest of side b1 traditions. bringing up the rear, “cheekbone” is frenetic and charging micro tribal rave (a new genre classification right there), a glorious medley of percussion, earworm synths and guillotined vocal samples, showing just why matthew herbert is as vital an artist now as he has ever been.

‘in time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer wrongtom and hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle mc’s the ragga twins. ‘in time’ strips back the jungle, d&b, garage sound that the ragga twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. throughout the record, the ragga twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene.

12inch sleeve designed and hand screen printed by alex from cassegrain. arcing seas is back with arcs-03, a unique ep of selected tracks from the first two releases, remixed by the mover, peder mannerfelt and shifted. first up, rave and techno legend the mover presents his first new material since 2009. after using the slogan “see you in 2017&#8243,,,, for years before, this marks the start his return. he turns trappist into a hard hitting electro workout using original parts that explode and punish the senses. peder mannerfelt introduces the b-side with his take on skull gun. broken beats and exciting percus-sion sit atop deep kicks, disorientating quick fire samples and rapid snares, showing how versatile and on-point he is. finally, shifted is called into action with a signature deep-sonic soundscape. rumbling kicks and high frequency textures occupy the sound field, alongside reverberating samples from vultures, making it his own. label info: arcing seas is an anagram of cassegrain. it started out as a secret alias, releasing a couple eps on our circula sound. the secret was less well kept after the duo appeared at berghain under this name.
