parisian veteran dj deep and romain poncet (well known for his traumer allias) released their first sergie rezza album on desire records in 2015, the album received heavy support from dixon, laurent garnier, hunee, antal to name a few. they now decided to start sergie rezza s own imprint. sergie rezzas sound is heavilly influenced by ambient, electronica, dub, jazz, industrial, funk, and also techno and house roots.

mihail p first came to light on respected label seventh sign before popping up just recently on verdant recordings alongside esb, and now he s back once again with the multiverse ep on distant worlds. his influences are clear, from the elegant melancholy and attention to detail of early uk techno to the snappy electro rhythms of drexciya, and he exercises those influences brilliantly on each of these four tracks. there are abundant tender synth lines criss-crossing intricately programmed drum machines in a true celebration of machine soul, all shot through with a heavy-lidded ambience that makes for some of the most captivating techno out there at the moment

icelandic techno veteran yagya enjoys a release on x/oz that celebrates both new and old material. the tempo is noticeably ramped up on -one weak light- but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious icelandic hue. -existence is weird- is no slouch either, but yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. -a very long daydream- is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while -getting closer to an unknown goal- sees the re-release of a track yagya released as rhythm of snow back in 1999.

hailing from the dark and mysterious world of bunker records, shemale makes a welcome return after many years of silence with this fantastic release on tabernacle. -star chamber summoning- sets a powerful tone - this is ambient music that demands attention through its sheer force of presence. -way to hyperborea- actually taps up some kind of beat structure, but it still behaves like a wayward backroom track with its undulating bassline and gravelly, brutally submerged beat. -shores of the western sea- is all analogue soundtrack bombast of the finest b-movie kind, and -wisdom of the stars- strikes a more nightmarish note in its use of discordant synth drones.

sterns edits returns after their well received and recently repressed amadou balake excursions, this time with ben gomori turning his hand to guinea for a third instalment in the series of re-works from the sterns music catalogue of african gems. balla et ses balladins were one of guinea s national orchestras formed as a result of the newly elected president, sekou toures authenticite policy of the early 1960s, which sought to promote guinea s cultural identity following independence from france in 1958. gomori takes the scalpel to two cuts recorded during their years on the state-run syliphone label, making good use of bandleader balla s lively trumpet playing. the gently haunting nyo is taken on a stomping slo-mo chug with a head-nodding bassline and stuttering fx creating a shimmering effect on the tropical guitars, while the rousing horns of wilikabo are laid over with rasping synth bass for a punchy juxtaposition. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.

spanish techno artist aiken is back on his own timeline label with another ep that offers up four more of his evocative takes on the genre. it comes after previous outings on non series and semantica and is his label’s first release since 2016. “basic principles” is up first and mesmerises with a pulsing lead synth line that forever changes shape. pummelling drums power along below and add up to a disorientating and hypnotic overall effect. “theory” is deeper and more rubbery, with manic synths and pads all racing along and pilling on the pressure while “midline” is right out fo the jeff mills playbook with its molten sci-fi synths journeying through outer space. clean, crips drums are upright and taught and get you on your toes, then “restriction” closes things out in superb minimalist fashion. this ep covers plenty of ground, and all of it is utterly compelling.
