berliners dirk leyers and nomad expressed their hard earned musical freedom in a dogma: the use of a roland tr-808 analog drum machine in every single track. they programmed the machine to lay poly-rhythms over multicultural drum and percussion tracks, fascinated -and sometimes puzzled- by its own characteristically sudden swing and accent changes, and named it: africaine 808 - their third and first female band member. in the first year of their musical joint venture, the three spent quite some time in remixing and editing some of their favourite african and island funk tunes, transforming the old gold into modern dj and dancefloor friendly tunes. the sound of organic grooves mixed with 808-beats and analogue synthesizer basslines became soon a trademark sound, and more and more samples got replaced by live played guitar, bass, organ and percussion. the trio experimented with different tempos and styles ranging from slow cumbia and exotic rumba themes to island-funk and percussive disco, electro and house. in spring 2012 they first took the project to another level, turning their tracks into a full live act at one of the vulkandance nights in berlin. today the project is growing and integrating guest musicians, drummers, percussionists and vocalists - for live performances as well as for recording in the studio. 100% sonic voodoo golf channel every time!

booka shade are set to release crossing borders featuring fritz kalkbrenner from their 2013 album eve on embassy one / blaufield music. booka shade first met fritz when he asked them to remix one of his songs, as we are fans of his voice, we thought it would be a great idea if he would sing a vocal for one of our demos for the new album. he came to our studio with the lyrics of crossing borders and within 1 hour, the song was recorded. crossing borders is enriched with acoustic and chilling electronic tones and demonstrates the trials and tribulations of the every day struggle weve got to go on, even if we stray, crossing borders to another side

further collaborations are also on the horizon, with a return to making music with friend and cohort ricardo villalobos as butric with the two figures being anything but generic, it promises to be another feet twitching, brain melting escapade in butchs musical ride.

berlin-based staffan linzatti returns for his second release on chronicle with another uncompromising selection of linear techno constructions sculpted with an unfaltering vision of how hypnotic body music can transcend simple rhythmic needs. icy atmospherics and razor-sharp production make for one of the strongest manifestations of linzattis distinctive sound in a career bristling with standout releases for labels such as stockholm ltd, balans, and his own searchlights records.

bristol music has always stood strongest as an alternative to the lowest common denominator, and so it is with brstl as the label continues to provide a platform to previously undiscovered talent in the underbelly of the citys flourishing house scene. following lauded debuts from shanti celeste and jay l, the sixth installment in the series turns to another unknown in the shape of samuel. as with other releases on brstl, 006 is made up of two distinct halves. on the a-side, >numberuma< delivers machine driven house of a rugged and charming nature. the drums switch up with playful intent but largely centre around a forward-charging 4/4 pulse with a faint hint of tropical flavour rubbed into the groove. meanwhile the limber lead keys speak of sunnier days through a cracked lens while the accompanying chord swells intone an equally uplifting and nostalgic message. while from the outset the track may be wrought from simple ingredients, the dynamic interplay between the different elements belies the producers years. on the flip, >groove therapy< opts for a more esoteric approach made up of long, dreamy lead-ins full of distant pads and delicate percussion and transitions as smooth as silk. indeed this track makes a smart foil to >numberuma<, choosing to snake its way into the subconscious through delicate melodic content and an undulating beat rather than rambunctious rhythm. slow-release filters draw that aforementioned pad in before sending it out to sea once more, and all the while the stripped back drums tick out a hypnotic chant. once again a pair of unique tracks loaded with character prove brstl to be an essential outpost for the most creative 4/4 music emanating from the west country.

the first release is always a big milestone for any label. in our case the first one (astrac ep) is also a long anticipated one, the title track waiting to be released for a long time. so far there is nothing ordinary about ztrls career as he had a big fan base without a single release or a dj gig. as a result of his ongoing inspiration by ricardo villalobos and encouragement from a:rpia:r s petre inspirescu among others he sharpened his producer skills which yielded astrac ep, another 2013 release on pluie/noir recordings compilation (pluie/noir year one) and an independent release on soul.on records titled >soul two< which was also remixed by the hungarian laurine frost. on top of his producer activity hes an avid record collector and a regular guest on uks rejam radio show, hes also done a podcast mix for the romanian nightclubber webzines unknown 500 series.

alexander kowalski is someone you should know. not only is he a resident artist at our club, but with uncountable eps and several albums on heiko laux label kanzleramt and others, he has contributed more to electronic music than many others. to have a separate platform for the darker and harder productions of his, he created the alias d_func. a while ago. when he approached us with the tracks that are now on the record in hand, we immediately fell in love with the mills-like energy of them. perfect drum programming, driving synth lines two perfect tools for any proper techno set. the dirt mix of revalism which is included in the digital release package puts the original in a more modern jacket with its stompy beat – another proof of how well alexander knows what the djs need to please their crowd.let the dancefloors burn!

jimmy edgars blossoming ultramajic imprint gets off to a typically brazen start in 2014 with an ep of fiercely visceral club music from us born, berlin-based producer danny daze. a self-confessed lover of classic electro, the 3 tracks present contain the mechanical aesthetics and skewed sonics of the labels he holds close to heart, whilst packing an undeniable punch that will see these drawn for time and time again. daze is the first in a whole slew of acts to be welcomed onto the roster over the course of the year, and marks another exciting chapter for the burgeoning label.

vinyl only! second round in the little hill, for this ride, rave in the hill ep, we have more techno raw material, another two original tracks from label head lorentz, with techno-stomped works. here little hill team-up roberto bosco (wave music) wich propose a remix full of atmposphere and again owl(bpmfamily) strike us with his strong interpretation!

third release for serie limitée. still 300 copies, 180g, no digital and no repress. a1 is, once again, reserved to chicagos underground pioneer joey kay who released his first record back in 1994. a raw house track with a neverending intro. the next track is pure deepness with another production from moscows young talent shyam. as deep and dark as russia s winters.. as usual to complete this side, the label manager, monsieur cedric, prepared a short bonus track. on the b side, the french co-founder of serie limitée, steve frisco, strikes back with a classic deep sound inspired by the early 90s after hours... ... while our friend from denmark, desos, owner of deso records, vibes ltd etc... closes the third volume of this story with a nice and deep house gem.

*it all started in 1974 with the purchase of my first mini moog and another 70s dream machine, a white mellotron m 400.* so starts klaus hoffmann of his 40 years love affair with the mellotron. moving from prog-rock guitarist to cosmic disco warrior in a space of a few years, the birth of cosmic hoffmann would lead to a number of classic kosmiche albums through-out the 1980s. before this though came space-disco. initially recorded in 1978 after endless late night sessions exploring the new realms of this free form electronic music, the first incarnation was recorded live to tape for a failed film project. an uplifting spaced-out synth journey, it was the later reworked version that would go on to become the lost cult classic. with added disco syncopation taking the track into interstellar spheres, it appeared only as a flipside of cosmic hoffmanns first and last single, *weltraumboogie*, in 1982. unfortunately the release did not make much impression at the time but has become highly sought-after for the more leftfield dj and music lovers in the years since. now fully licensed and remastered, the inclusion of the unreleased 1978 original will be only add to the collectors dream.

optimo trax is an offshoot label of optimo music for tracks aimed at djs/dancefloors. yes, we know there are too many record labels already, but we felt an overriding desire to start another one as so much music that didnt seem quite right for optimo music (i.e. music that was specifically designed for dancing) kept coming our way. like the parent label, optimo trax will release music by new artists and excavate forgotten classics.

its safe to say that 2013 has been the biggest year in gregor treshers career so far. remixing depeche mode & moby, releasing his 4th full length album and completing another tour around the globe spanning over more than 8 months, there is no stopping in sight for the man.

daze maxim adds another episode to his practice of long-form explorations, on this his second release for lisbon’s assemble music. this time hes joined by a master in this field, baby ford, whose remixes over the past few years continue his own distinctive development of extended minimal house trips. dazes beginning an ending rides a skippy, loose beat for several minutes, the snares and hats gradually opening up as wordless vocalizations exclaim and interject with increasing regularity, the bass bumping contentedly underneath. pads join the equation for an intricate midsection – evoking memories of alcachofa-era happy experimentalism that nonetheless fit within daze maxims disciplined and dancefloor-oriented approach.peter ford recasts the original into his now unmistakable soundspace, where the push and pull between front-and-centre rhythmic components and evanescent background atmospherics creates that recognizable but undefinable sense of emotion, felt but unexplained. in ford’s world there isnt anything as simple as a beginning or an end, so the remix provides a valuable counterpoint to the original. given their now impressive track record, its no surprise that assemble music has pulled off another cohesive statement that works equally on the body and the mind.
