this is how it started focuses heavily on the early days of the chicago sound, especially in the formative years at ron hardy s music box.
following chicago s disco demolition night in 1979 the genre s popularity fell dramatically, hence fewer disco records being released.in this era chicago s djs such as hot mix 5, hardy, knuckles & jesse saunders played a variety of styles mixing in italo, electronic pop music, electro-funk and older disco joints often playing their own edits which focusing on the portions of the songs which always rocked the dancefloor. at the end of 1982, when dj frankie knuckles left the warehouse to open the power plant, ron hardy started to dj at the warehouse s new location until owner robert williams renamed it the music box. in 1984, a local label released a 12-inch single called -on and on- by locals jesse saunders & vince lawrence who had simple made the song in order to replace a record which had been stolen from saunders collection, the -on & on- bootleg disco megamix by mach. hence chicago house music was born and a modern day phenomenon followed.

here s something to stir the loins of any discerning disco dj: a studio hook-up between veteran producer felix dickinson (fresh from his much-loved outing on futureboogie recordings), horse meat disco and one-time dfa man (and renowned multi-instrumentalist) marcus marr. there s an additional contributor, too: a mystery (presumably big-name) vocalist whose talk-box heavy delivery sits somewhere between prince, george clinton and pharrell. the track itself is something of a summer anthem in the making - an immaculately produced p-funk jam with the additional benefit of a shuffling, house-friendly groove. no details on how many copies have been pressed, either way, you d be well advised to snap up a copy while you still can.

george whyman & joseph westphal present their debut on lochmann records: a catchy club track with hot vocals by thefirstlostgirl, that brings the crowd to sweat. the track comes with remixes by airdice, melokind and vamos art.

repress 2014 - next up in the 10 inch series on mos_deep another heavy 2-tracker of d marc cantu, which will be followed by a (mini)-album later this year. the opening track is a fierce chicago-styled banger kicking off with an extremely solid and frantic bassline while d marcs low-pitched voice asks us >how are we doing?<. the track slowly evolves into a deep and atmospheric masterpiece with spatial strings slowly expanding throughout the track.
>how are we doing?< is counter-balanced by the fragility and subtlety on the flipside. >a second earth< is a laid-back and emotional retro-futuristic techno track overflowing with sadness and melancholy, echoing the sounds of the artificial-intelligence era. like a lost vessel drifting through space this track captivates and terrifies at the same time. a beauty and a beast!

in 2011 it got a little quiet around the co-productions of fraenzen texas and ruede hagelstein aka the cheapers. but since the beginning of the new year the lights dont go out in their studio doing beats and sound. next to releases on areal records and bar25 the uy063 was born. title of the name giving a-side goes back on a quote from paris hilton who wants to tell with >amazeballs< how super cool she finds things. anyway the two artists made it real with their concise bassline which will make the people reliably squeak more than hobby djane hilton. on the b-side things turn a bit more severe: egyptian summer quotes with samples the arabic spring in africa and produces a revolutionary ground mood which has never been heard before. on b2 however there are the cheaperesque absurdities on the microfon like we know them. depositing skillfully their own vocals in the belly of a hungry electro monster.

how the other half lives is a new label run by london-based portuguese dj and producer zntn. the label launches with on rushmore by the deadstock 33s and stopmakingme. the deadstock 33s - uk club legend justin robertson of lionrock and revtone fame, former hacienda resident and prolific producer over the years - combines forces with stopmakingme - the fabric/kill em all resident and bugged out! regular with recent productions on bang gang, codek and moshi moshi - for on rushmore and as you are. this marks their third collaboratory release, after an ep on tigersushi and single on gomma.
