following up after the mental drop by detroits master of repetition, population one, we have a new signing hailing from the land of the rising sun, helping us to set the standards for this new imprint— uncompromised techno funk! japanese producer imugem orihasam has spent the past 3 years slowly evolving. his early work on ilian tape and esperanza sounds like that of an already seasoned craftsman digesting detroit bit by bit, with a focus on lush textures and swooning eerie melodies. this past year has seen a spike in activity for imugem, with releases on patrice scotts sistrum recordings, berlins nsyde, and adam marshalls new kanada—all showcasing a more focused and exuberant approach that has sharpened his reflective compositions. with gem, imugem steps away from the supple melodies and tranquil atmospheres for a trip deep into the power plant.

quickly rising on the horizon of the london electronic scene, croydon-based deft joins forces with wotnot music for an enchanting two-track ep with three beastly remixes. while driving dancefloors wild with an energetic and fresh brand of ghetto-tech and footwork, defts production on this release betrays his hip hop origins in a whole new way, with seductive beats, g-funk-esque top lines and unlimited swagger.

first up is tabou for the people by sofrito specials featuring l barrabas which twitch edited for his dj sets a couple of years back. the lovely people at sofrito kindly gave permission for it to be included on this release. its a relentlessly driving slab of 4/4 afro funk with horn explosions. next up is the 10th and final track in twitchs cumbia series. the first 8 were released on japans lets get lost label and the missing number 9 is being saved for a future release. colombias cumbia was born out of african influences. this track is based around a sample from colombian cumbia legend andres landero and is an attempt to fuse traditional cumbia sounds with up to date production styles. the end result is a slow motion hypnotic cumbia retaining the haunting melancholia inherent in the original sample. leading the aa side, twitch passed a wild highlife song by ghanas atakoru manu to glasgows super talented auntie flo (whose highly recommended future rhythm machine album recently saw a release) to play around with. auntie flo cut it up and added additional drums and bass to come up with this euphoric modern highlife groover

our friends in nyc just keep on delivering the goods! lee douglas re-vamps another duo of lost curiosities, with the a side offering up striding, synth soaked euro-disco & the b taking us into teutonic punk-funk mantra territory.

after a few months of releasing collaborative eps alongside sascha rydell and roman lindau, mike dehnert marks a quarter century of releases on his own label with fachwerk 25, a full-length album. comprised of 13 tracks and coming almost a year after his last effort, >framework< on delsin records, this new album sees mike experimenting somewhat. away from the dubbed out, functional and raw techno funk of his usual output, fachwerk 25 shows some concession to the album format, with more mysterious tracks of ambient buried amongst bits of acid, rave and plenty of unhinged sound design.

continuing motechs 10 year celebrations and a kick-ass party at londos fabric last month, dj 3000 now presents 10 years of motech (the remixes) part 2 ep ahead of the full length remix cd due this summer. part 1 already saw both dj 3000 and sascha sonido take on gerald mitchells belly dancer from mt-008. now uk techno legend, mark broom takes a brief break from his beardman imprint to add this killer interpretation for an impressive opener. next up we turn to goodlifes kiko who doesnt disappoint with his driving new rendition of dj 3000s defiant (mt-015), toughening up the original but still maintaining its funk-fuelled roots. the rest of the ep features a remix a track taken from franki juncas 2011 album invisible moods. firstly,ill be around gets the remix treatment from detroits luke hess, whose releases have appeared on the likes of echocord, kontra-musik and the mighty planet-e delivers a moodier take on things, with deep pads and a grooving beat.

the citizens bands second instalment for ramonas favourite label hollows their long lasting love affair. christian beisswengers (cb funk, one half of arto mwambe) is nothing less than dealing with the demise of an empire. >broken rome< is a codeine trip through early nu groove rave tracks as well as an ode to junior vasquez at the helm of the sound factory seen and heard through frosted glass. >densed< on the other hand tips its toes into the current deep house stream with an arto-mwambe-like hook and a thumping bass line. the spaces in-between those rudiments are taken up by the idm finger exercise and jewel that is >into<: ottoman dancing!

prodigal sons the deep space orchestra return to foto with the mighty blindsided track. ver on the flip the two remixes from medlar (wolf music) and another foto regular andy ash are equally as good. medlar opts for shuffling drums and a dose of the funk whilst andy turns in a classy bumping electronic workout.

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

straight japanese killer techno !!! tight, mechanical and brutal with an underlying funk, snow monkeys is the sort of multi-faceted beast that kobayashi is known for. the rough edges are allowerd full space to create tension but the track is tempered with some brilliant, shimmering and evocative melodies that slide into the mix for just the right amount of time before subsiding into the churning groove. one of the new school of japanese techno producer, a.mochi delivers a well pitched, moody version on the flip. pacey yet measured in its progression its a version that takes the originals tension to new levels and wont be a surprise for anyone who has heard his productions / remixes for the likes of figure, cocoon and a-wave. hideo kobayashi is one of the few producers who can skip from deep or vocal house though to searing techno with ease and snow monkeys is a perfect example of what he can do when it comes ot the tougher sounds

leeds/nottingham duo mak & pasteman might be in their 20s, but their musical influences stretch from the funk and soul of the 60/70s, through juan atkins proto-techno, to soulful house, d n b and uk garage. which wont surprise anyone listening to this, their debut ep for shifting peaks, a 4 track statement of intent that sounds like it couldnt have been made any time but 2012, but also feels like 20 years of hardcore continuum is embedded deep in its musical dna.
