deep space orchestras use of weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split ep, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. this expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. dso s beautiful and surprisingly fragile -mendoza- leads the way, with 7 citizens calming, alien house groover -fatum- close behind. arguably best of all, though, is other worlds -coldname eld-, a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, head high style pianos. it is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the detroit-included haku.

what happens if you ask two up and coming and highly talented uk producers to create a track for local talk, then get a hyped house duo from manchester to remix it? you get the bitter love ep from the true rebels together with a fierce remix from deep space orchestra. its two very different takes in both tempo and energy. the original version is a battle of piano stabs with a bouncy yet filthy bassline that results in midtempo house burner with a slight techy feel. the deep space orchestra remix takes us straight to detroit, fusing classic techno sounds together with modern house.

theres no need to do a big introduction of deep space orchestra. si murray and chris barker have releases on a number of heavyweight labels (e.g. delusions of grandeur or use of weapons) and regular guest appearances at club nights and radio shows throughout the uk and rest of the world. their second ep for quintessentials is some raw and analogue business topped with the dso funk! wolf music hot shot krl adds some piano and old school power on his remix and we must admit were delighted!

prodigal sons the deep space orchestra return to foto with the mighty blindsided track. ver on the flip the two remixes from medlar (wolf music) and another foto regular andy ash are equally as good. medlar opts for shuffling drums and a dose of the funk whilst andy turns in a classy bumping electronic workout.

marcos cabral and jacques renaults latest on the prowl 12 inch features the return of andy ash, the man who dropped >another world< with them last year (otp007) as well as a grab of edits on otp party breaks way back in 2010. as is to be expected with the talented, young producer, the ep is all groovy, bouncy, high-octane house with a hardy injection of disco glitz.

ly sander & michael j. collins join forces to bring you raoul06 via raoul, a deep, soothing ep. no response is a laid back and haunting piece, featuring warm bass and soaring pads. percussion is kept simple here, with the focus on the bass groove and introspective wording. home listening and chill out sessions arent complete without this air-y number. to bring it up a bit, the >deep space orchestra remix< lays a beat and a groove under the track and takes us to galactic depths. a cool energy is spread throughout and saucy percussion takes the levels higher. this is a late night dance track that gives goose bumps. it will certainly help to reconnect senses in the early morning. >russian roulette< displays nice use of delay and relaxed percussion. this hasnt got the boom of techno, but it does have the space-y synths and ambience to bring you up to your feet. when everything is in place, it feels right an afterparty delight.

following on from their last two sell out eps, foto recordings (run by ali ooft!) enlist the talents of deep space orchestra for release number three in the catologue. first up >riding in my imaginary jeep< showcases their trademark old synths/modern production aesthetic to full effect, taking in classic drum machines and warm synth lines to produce an epic piece of deep house. second track >sir shina< sees them doing some deft sample-manipution with a big chugging midtempo jam the result. ooft! meanwhile give >riding< the once-over, beefing up the low end whilst retaining most of the musical parts.

die letzte fsoj vol. 11 ist schon fünf jahre her, die erste kam 1995 raus. ich habe das gefühl die zeit dreht zurück. ein bischen erinnern mich die tracks - vor allem die langsamen stücke, wie so mancher sound - an die ersten >future sounds of jazz< compilations. ich kann sagen, ich hatte eine gewisse leerstelle von 2007 bis ende 2010, sah weder die notwendigkeit, noch hatte ich lust empfunden, eine neue fsoj zu machen. es gab seit 2007 schon den ein oder anderen tollen track, aber nicht genug, um gleich eine compilation daraus zu zimmern. zugegeben war ich, wie viele andere, mehr dem disco-, edit- und deep house-fieber verfallen. bin ich immer noch, aber die musik fusioniert wieder stärker mit den vibes, die ich für fsoj suchte.
es begann in 2010, festigte sich in 2011, ein déjà-vu ritt mich plötzlich, der viel beschworene zeitgeist wehte wieder. haufenweise gute tracks, interessante projekte, die von der Ästhetik, vom sound und feeling den frühen 90ern, oder meinem gutdünken ihre reminiszenzen aufwiesen. immerhin sind seit der vol. 1 schon zwei generationen nachgewachsen, sagt man doch, daß alle sieben jahre eine neue generation entsteht. ich denke, die jüngeren projekte (z.b.: lo tide aus australien, anchorsong und ragout delapin beides projekte aus japan, scrimshire, letherette, laszlo, sepalcure, eden) die hier vertreten sind, spiegeln das eindrücklich wieder.

a return to vr from ben sun, who delves into deeper territory on the original cut, emotive analogue synths washing over a roland drum groove and a swirling female vocal, all underpinned by a warm, rumbling bassline. the flipside features some heavyweight remix work from the prolific deep space orchestra (use of weapons, art, delusions of grandeur) and label mate tyson ballard teaming up with vincenzo (poker flat, dessous). vincenzo and ballards mix is a heavy hitting, moody take on the original, with subtle, dark strings and a growling, evolving bassline, while dso round off the release with trademark fat drums and soaring melodic synth work.

the second vinyl sampler features the production skills of some very exciting, emerging new artists. first up is deep space orchestra from the uk. having recently caught the eye of gilles peterson and top house imprints like delusions of grandeur, it seems that dsos music is now starting to get the attention that it deserves. andy ash from liverpool is another producer who has been consistently turning out top quality underground house sounds for a number of years now, most notably for the revenges l.e.s.s. edits series. meanwhile, italian producer nicholass blend of disco edits and original 90s house sounds has been creating quite a stir, and has seen his standing as a producer grow weekly with various releases on imprints like small world disco, mo more hits, kojak & dikso already, as well as an increasing demand for remix work.
