a year after his extremely versatile debut ep for figure, viers comes out with another batch of tunes that again set him apart from his peers both in production value and creativeness. touching on the tropes of classic detroit techno, saxton presents a beautifully delicate opening track, rife with life from within the machines while still steadily thumping ahead. it’s the mix of this vital momentum together with a certain restraint, allowing each element to breath. so much that even the slightest adjuments cause maximum effectmetro, as felt on suitably titled stomper nothing changed where everything hits in exactly the right place. same goes for the incessant dialogue of tones on zehn, which sigha expands into a pensive piece, layering soothing washes of synths. not only an exceptional ep in its own right, figure 85 further cements viers as a skilled craftsman with seemingly endless imagination.

after releasing their debut full length album on kompakt last year, hunter/game return to just this with another immersive offering. on the dead soul ep the duo continue to refine their expressive yet subtly arranged sound. the title track unfolds slowly, sculpting the melody, texture and suspense. joey andersons take on dead soul is airy and atmospheric without losing it’s pulsing flow. isolation covers a broad spectrum and is filled with contrasts in which an intense bass interacts with a delicate and breathy melody. balance is key to hunter/game’s music and this ep is no exception

after more than 2 years of waiting berlin-based artist fabian dikof is back with a new release on best works records his ep the who his trade-mark sound remains: catchy arpeggio-sounds with tech-house synth usage. with these elements he creates a very mature tapestry that gives the tune great dynamic play in its rhythmic morphosis. the track camouflage features berlin-based vocalist ann weller from the band ann & bones. last but not least remixer dubspeeka reworks the original giving it a more minimal techno-flavour and with its tool-character it hits the dance-floor full on. the who ep is yet another great stepping stone for fabian dikof. there is more to come from this gifted producer.

love notes (from brooklyn) serves up another winner, this time with the sonic stylings of the illustious (and also brooklyn based) octo octa, whose not unimpressive discography already includes releases on such heavyweight labels such as running back, argot, and deepblak. from the opening, echoed chords and unique percussive qualities of eyes low, through the spaced out funk of touch formation, to the early morning vibes of i feel, this ep delivers on all levels. this is the 9th release on this fine american imprint and they show no signs of slowing down their sonic agenda.

ant plates vinyl only ventures continue unabated, taking a break from the yse saint laur ant releases and turning to minus the majors instead. whether its just plate in another one of his guises or not is unclear, but the music certainly fits in with the more exploratory, downtempo nature of previous vinyl only releases. he looked is an especially funky number that revolves around crafty beats and warm moog-esque synth ripples. things get more broken on jizz jazz, and then drongo manages to go even further out to sea in its quest for the perfect balance between funk and freakiness.

the cocoon recordings very own inhouse compilation series dots and pearls is back once again and takes us on a tour to the expected sounds of the upcoming spring season. frankfurt based christian burkhardt starts the selection of four exclusive and previously unreleased tracks. his -karambolage- breathes spring air and creates an early summer feeling par excellence. this tune will even turn gray and rainy april weather into bright sunlight. on spot with playful and positive harmonies and a very subtle 80 s synthie-pop flavour. this one here definitely makes us want more! next in line is argy, one of our most long standing cocoon recordings artists. his -how late it was, how late- has an undeniable 80s retro charm, too however it follows a completely different direction than burkhardts -karambolage-. this one refers strongly to an early 80s acid sound and reminds us of great productions such as -on and on- by jesse saunders. we cannot tell how far argy s reminiscences goes back but for the ones who know: -how late it was, how late- will bring you back to the great times of labels like rams horn and their rational youth s -dancing on the berlin- wall. brave and surprising at the same time and above all: -übercool-! with -baroon- by markus fix follows another acid track - however, this one has a far more epic flavour full of warm analogue strings and based on a hypnotic arrangement. fix -baroon- is defintely less retro than argys and burkhardts contributions - a deep tech house gem made for the first sunrises of the upcoming allnighter open airs. with -euphrasia- jim jules accelerates slightly but goes also deeper at the same time. his production follows the cinematic mood of markus fix but paints a darker picture. this one takes us on an intensive musical journey. deep, slightly gloomy and extremely hypnotic, -euphrasia- is almost captivating and bewitching and a perfect conclusion for this highly diversified fourtracker.

hands off is back with another stunning release. this time we asked trinidadian deep to release two tracks on a fine 10inch. we love his deep music, trinidadian deep has a very unique sound, and we think that this release is something very speciel. he released tracks on labels so many quality labels, and we can t wait for this to drop.

steve monite’s album, only you, is a prime slab of nigerian boogie. it’s sinewy, compact and sexy, a little bit of disco mixed with a big dose of funk. loose and groovy, it’s a sonic seduction from another dimension. with legendary producer tony okoroji at the desk, and influential musician and sound engineer, nkono teles, creating magic on the synth, the title track is raw and melodic, dark and sweet at the same time.

new uk based imprint aiming to bring you atmospheric and emotional treats that toe the line between bass heavy, electro leaning, house & techno and everything in between. the label’s first outing comes from the duo thread. tabor kicks of the release and it’s a motorik workout that combines elements of minimal techno and acid, with a squelchy bassline and moody synth melodies all carried along by tight percussions. dalling is a straight up electro jam, a galloping start/stop percussive pattern, ever-present pads with more layers of squelch added for maximum effect. on the flip brackenbury picks up a couple of notches on the bpm counter - driving proceedings to 130+, a proper heads down techy number with elements of micro house, filled with quirky sounds and lush pads layered on top of syncopated percussive patterns. the final cut on the ep conningham does away with all pretences and hits you in the face with another dose of unrelenting space music. heavy bass line, crunchy electro percussions and sci-fi atmospheric pads rounding off the first release in style.

days of being wild continues their collaboration with berlin based french producer franz matthews, releasing his first solo ep, the spacey, cosmic ostkreuz. half of the duo languages, whose 1st ep the label released at the end of last year, franz matthews explores a very different sound on his first solo effort, all space disco, retro synths and funky guitars out. title track ostkreuz has been road tested by the days of being wild crew on dance floors all around europe all of last year and has created euphoria and anticipation in equal measure. this is a cosmic hit from outer space, all constructed around well known ingredients that thanks to franz matthews musical and melodic talent rise here to epic heights. the b-side guns of rixdorf is another devastating peak time tune. while remaining in the same vein as ostkreuz, it feels more high energy with its irresistible funky guitars calling and responding over a driving bass. days of being wild always try to pair producers with remixers that will shed a new light on their work. its no exception with ostkreuz, who gets the reinvention treatment from no other than moscoman and rodion aka the claydermans. the cosmic vibe is still here hovering on top in the opening chords of the remix, but soon enough a sub, housier bass makes its way in the mix and wont let you go until the end. carried by shuffling claps and a bouncier beat, the groove here is totally re-invented, taking ostkreuz from peak time to the darker edges of after land.

welcome to season five of the jazz jousters sessions. after four years of non stop album releases we thought we d take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. we decided to attempt another locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. so here we go...
mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

clutchy and fatty....high desert crunch meets city life punch for this collaborative project in sound. instrumental elements of soul, jazz, hip-hop, rock and more resonate throughout the record. just what any clutchy hopkins or fat albert einstein fan would ask for, track after track of laced up loveliness. these two gents pair banging rhythms with lush melodies and top them off with their signiture low brow high fi sound. guaranteed for some straight nasty. acoustic and electric instrumentation set the tone and in their individual stlyes, clutchy and fatty navigate your journey through psych folk caverns of cactus dust and marine layer funk with bloodshot rust. it is distinctive, original and fresh, paying homage to the past, present and future. visionary folk funk.

the second release from seattle-based collective secondnature comes from simic with the discussion of interests ep. three tracks of psychedelic and effective electronic music that falls somewhere between house and techno, along with a remix from slow life lead producer s. moreira. discussion of interests is another marker in the development of secondnature’s musical realm, expanding it from the dark and cerebral techno of fugal’s “oil panes” ep to one that includes more groove-laden tracks with expressive melodic content.

when tresor founder dimitri hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in east berlin on march 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of berlin s most influential and enduring techno clubs. “we didn’t know what would happen 10 months later,” he says. “we signed a lease for a year. which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months…”
as tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the us, germany, china, france, austria, italy and the uk, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification east berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

danilo braca (danyb) arrived in brooklyn from his native rome in 2011 playing around town, running sound at the output events & slowly allowing these edits - informed by many years working the floors across europe - to evolve on and off the dancefloors of new york city busted vol. 2 continues the journey with a fine foot-stompin slap bass jam, followed by a foot-workin & vibe heavy jazz funker. the b side gives us some top drawer psychedelic soul and another awesome cosmic cut that wraps up a package of the finest obscure floor-shakers around one hell of a 12- ladies & gentlemen !

braindance records, giving the morning calm a second chance. having only appeared for a few live sets mainly dedicating himself to production, go dam, is a silent actor for the change in seoul s music scene. with a diverse spectrum of influences and genuine love for alternative electronic music, we are given a unique identity portrayed through his sound. the “alternate dimensions e.p”, first output of the label, opens the doors to another dimension comprising of electro infused melodies. reminiscent of the mid-late 90’s uk intelligent techno-electro sounds it also combines heavy detroit influences with a peculiar sonority that will invoke you into the story within the alternative soundscape.

following his first ep for accidental jnr in the summer bambooman is now back with something entirely different. the downtempo experimental designs of the ‘feel ep’ give way to his latest offering ‘shudder’. available on 12” and digital the 4 tracks of shudder weave through a club music tapestry like a chainsaw through custard. the opening and title track is hard to describe, a mix of off kilter synth stabs and hammering snare that routes you to the floor - it’s one of those tracks to whip out of your bag to remind the crowd they have no idea what is coming next. track 2 ‘grasp’ with a blissful detroit groove under deep rich melting chords is a perfect blend of early funk house style and super crisp new production. side b opens with ‘m1’ a lazy floor track with washes of bells, static and detuned synth above a bed of solid kick and shuffling bass. finally ‘kyrian’ closes proceedings, another club friendly slice (despite being in a 7&#8260.8 time signature), the track could have led the ep in its own right but feels like the perfect bookend with its shifting almost garage like 2-step feel and glancing vocal hook.

sixth ep on firescope records the new sub label of the legendary b12 records. this release is by b12 ft yonii, uk techno fused with wonderful pure and beautiful vocals. b12 established early 90’s with a multitude of releases appearing on warp records uk, b12 records, soma records, delsin records, firescope records, art , buzz, de:tuned. the ep entitled in vain is the first ep featuring b12 and the wonderful singer songwriter yonii. these are real songs, with real meanings and are the the result of a pure and wonderful collaboration. the tracks tell a story, and with open ears and heart they will deliver the message clearly. “sympathy” a very acoustic sounding drum and percussion arrangement held together with glorious b12 esq pads is the opener here. the vocals elevate this track to another level, with a dangerous equilibrium of vulnerability and distain. “shotgun” straight in with a heavy synth baseline and lyrics. a menacing track featuring a vocal that floats effortlessly on a downtempo b12 vibe. an exposed interplay of rhythmic melodies and dark imagery. “moth” a busy beat and synth driven backdrop provide the platform for yonii to tell her story of love and pain. is it all in vain? why must we gravitate towards the flame that ultimately extinguishes us…. “sympathy (beatz)” & “moth (beatz)” just the beatz of the main tracks :-) finished in glorious white and green splatter vinyl with exclusive full colour artwork by the wonderful catherine prendergast aka cellar doo

another year, and another birthday has come for steyoyoke. this year marks our 5th anniversary, and as such we would like to present our 5th anniversary compilation, filled with unique remixes and new faces on the steyoyoke map.

it’s time for local talk to go local again with another swedish producer, eric ericsson. with numerous releases out in labels like planet e, fragile and freerange he’s one of those producers with one foot in the techno scene and another in the more soulful house scene. basically, he s not a one trick pony! for his release on local talk we would say he lands somewhere between classic chi-town house and thumping nyc house groove but without sounding too retro or washed out. its simply real house music! we begin with love it, a real bumpy house track with analogue basslines and swinging fender grooves that will work both stateside and in the european house clubs. the second track the chi is as the title suggest a homage to chicago with a slight old school boo williams fee. - dope! but thats not all, to give the release a broader twist we got man of the moment oskar offerman (berlin) to remix love it for us. oskar goes more deep with his trademark sound and gives us a dark mix that will sound amazing in your favourite berlin club of choice.

berlin collective away ready the 4th release in their catalogue. with 001 on the label being a va, 002 being an ep from joe claussell & mr.ties as away soundsystem and 003 being a second va - they now present a split 2-tracker from label mainstay move d and his pairing with jonah sharp under their collaborative guise of reagenz. whilst keeping an anchor at berlin’s about blank, away have hosted parties at numerous other venues across the city as well as barcelona and throughout have maintained a welcoming and free spirited attitude. harnessing this attitude and channeling the collectives detroit influences, away have developed their imprint which has so far taken shape over a set of 3 analogue-heavy vas. next in line follows suit in melding tough drums with motor city pads. natural in their progression, both tracks spark ardour as they steadily develop adding another fine addition to a blooming catalogue.

d edges cultured off shoot olga is back with a new ep, radiolarian, from german-bulgarian stefan goldmann. again it is a perfectly well sculpted ep with deep and sleek lines that get right into your head. the man behind it is the co-owner of the excellent macro label and for more than fifteen years has released intricate house and techno sounds. he is a deep thinker and master of hi-fidelity sound design and intricate grooves, so is perfect for this label. radiolarian is first and is seven sublime minutes of tunnelling techno rippled with neon melodies and firefly like pads that burrow into your brain. it is a high tempo and high impact track but a subtle one that works its magic slowly. building to a number of peaks, it then pulls back and the whole thing starts again. on the flip, streams is freaky and unhinged, with weird synth sounds making for a trippy atmospheres as minimal beats roll below. perfectly detailed so as to work on both head as well as heel, it rounds out another fine ep.

over 3 years ago, casey tucker was thrust into the limelight after 15 years in the shadows. never truly getting the recognition for is detroit influenced and post rave sound in the 90s, for those that knoe reissued some of casey s classic material and unearthed some gems on dat in 2013. fast forward to the current day and a recent treasure trove was uncovered and some fresh dats untouched since the late 90s were discovered! ben promptly bought a dat player on ebay and shipped it to casey s home for the un-dusting to commence. fttk has worked with casey to present another round of authentic material spread across a further three eps. the track carpet dancer has been in demand since the fine balance recordings gained deserved attention. originally featuring as the a side on the very first fine balance ep, it evokes all of the emotions that caseys music can muster. juxtaposition is a slower groovy effort with meandering chords, trademark fizzy percussion and topped off with a lush string finale. whatever comes to mind rounds off the ep with a rolling percussive bassline, delicate arps and smooth sweeping pads.

following up his tender, soul-searching, journeyman 12” on lobster sub-label mörk last year. the northern hemisphere’s drum fanatical enigma roza roza returns with another round of heavily swung, choppy drum jams, all shrouded in a smooth aura of glistening hi ends, smooth carpeted pads and rankling, chiming basses.
“-”was by far one of the most off-kilter eps we’ve released so far, and sadok sudei picks up where the frenetic drum skits left off, reaching further afield for inspiration and providing a refreshing angle on core elements and ideas distilled from detroit techno, arp-led ambient and uk dub and bass influences.

aus welcome back label favourite shenoda for his third release on the label, burn backed with a remix from juxta position. previous releases on hypercolour & electric minds have seen shenoda firmly on the ascent but its in his recent outings on aus that his bold, rugged club music has really reached its zenith. burn follows suit with its predecessors with its power being rooted in seismic, analogue drums that are balanced against soft, allaying melodies. the muscular vista then rolls out punching stabs and tight, shuffling drums before label mate marquis hawkes dusts off his juxta position alias and delivers a pacey and forthright take on burn. melodies are softly mangled and given a spectral quality that recalls his mazury on dvs1’s mistress wrapping another solid addition to the catalogue as the aus music family continue to deliver the goods.

starting in 1990 recording for sheffield label ozone records under the name of panic with a release called voices of energy, which was then licensed to buzz in belgium, buzz 001, buzz then went on to release classics by carl craig and derrick may. he set up his own label in the same year solid groove records. the label had 30 vinyl releases over thirteen years and tracks were licensed by derrick may, terry francis, pete tong, adam x, and carl cox.as well as this he ran another four other label s, textures, dark, dot, and cheap knob gags.

synthetic gold records 3. another selection from a personal collection. this time by greek dj and producer anestie gomez. beginning with the beautiful and hypnotic khan - leni on the cross (olympia), a track first published in the 1997 silentmoviesilverscreen cd album. then a2 eloi brunelle - neneh, originally released in the 2001 cd album eloi brunelle ? elsonic project. on the bside andres garcia - invisivel, a minimal house stomper, which was out on on grand cru 2008, a various artists cd, by connaisseur recordings. sgr003 will be pressed on 180gram black vinyl and presented in brown cardboard sleeves.

another sizeable bite outta the big apple ! the mighty ny edits series returns ! very limited and mysterious one-off 12 s emanating, as you might expect, from the city that never sleeps put together by a legendary ny record store owner from a personal stash of edits constructed for back in the day club play, which still sound super fresh and effective today ! always a presale sellout - so don t snooze

this is the fourth ep the paris legends dan ghenacia and chris carrier have made together over the last year, and it’s just as fresh as their previous efforts with plenty of bounce, depth and funk. first up on the a-side is ‘the blue grass’, a deeply sensual cut with a potent low end. therein lies the groove, which is utterly captivating – made to get you writhing with glee, this one is aimed straight at the hips. alongside that sleazy bassline we have jazzy notes, swinging percussion and otherworldly bleeps and chirps. all of which makes it a great intro to this sterling ep. on the flip side, we have ‘blue stick’, another ridiculously groovy riddim with warped voices floating above a set of crispy beats and a raw undercurrent of emotion. minimal in composition, and the effect is deadly. lastly, to close out the three-tracker, it’s ‘kind of blues’ (can you spot the theme here?!). when it starts off, this one is a stomper with a moody expression. the beats are hefty, the bass morose and the analogue effects strangely cosmic. more twisted vocals are filtered in the background, giving this one its weird hook. the vocal reveals itself in the breakdown midway through before the track bounds on to its finale. dan ghenacia and chris carrier deliver three firebombs, perfect dance floor material with tight grooves and killer production. would you expect anything less?! go get em…

this record definitely takes a bit more of a layered approach - natan h offers us yet another unique, immersive, and charismatic release for acid camp records. acid camp records is rolling through again, this time with an artist known for his atmospheric and cosmic-oriented tracks, natan h. conveying inspiration for this record, just a little nod to extrasensory experiences and perception, is undoubtedly fitting for acrs second release. the opening track, atmosphere, breaks away from 4/4 timing with o-kilter drums that traverse into a heavier beat, pushing the track forward just to bring it right back at the end. followed up with a remix from techno serialist, conforce. through his use of a low pass filter, polyrhythms, and fervor conforce delivers a track nothing short of the prototype for driving techno. remote view pt. i turns out an ambient break and taking the listener to a space of the ethereal and planetary. the ep closes with remote view pt. ii, which incorperates layers of hi-hats, delayed strings, and synths that alternate throughout the arrangement in syncopation.

another late night disco chugger by the italian warehouse bizarro -bottin-. synthetic dark groove, hypnotizing cinematic dreamwave. reborn sequential sounds that bring life to this strange solar system. -quesdarse irse- has a sitar played by the great beatrice scarpa-bb- of italy accompanied by whomping liquid analog treats to this future classic.

house hit makers mother recordings are back with another tight two track package. this one comes from the label boss nhan solo, a real house talent with plenty of great singles and eps in his back catalogue, most often on his own great label.

ibon’s debut release three ways ep is a journey through old-school trance and heartbreak. the ep draws lines from the energy and style of the danish-norwegian’s striking dj sets. from demanding sirens and aggressive bass rollers on maur to the broken melodies on no cry and svever, this three-tracker reflects the high paced energy of yet another copenhagen talent on this third release from ectotherm.

super rhythm trax release their first record of 2017 and it’s a return for jared wilson who steps up with four tracks of deep acidic house music. these tracks burrow away and are certified ear-worms from the opening ‘getting that feeling’ with it’s warm bassline complimented by lush pads and on the other end of the scale, the sparse menace of ‘it’s the message’, it’s another great ep from the detroit acid don.

already heavy hitters on the house music scene since their first releases back in 2012, waze & odyssey continue to carve out club burners with such ease, and their first release of 2017 finds a suitably fitting home on edible. the duo of firas waez and serge santiago have seemingly not put one step wrong in their ascendency within the house music circuit. be it releases for labels like wolf music, elrow or their own w&o street tracks, or remixes for the likes of disclosure, totally enormous extinct dinosaur and metronomy, w&o have found that knack of delivering sure fire winners time after time. already a staple in label boss eats everything’s dj sets, ‘down with tha’ has all the hallmarks of a bona fide club classic, if the hyperactive drums and looping vocal refrain doesn’t draw you in enough, then the downright funky bass lick that prominently packs a punch really provides the killer hook. the, quite frankly, face melting breakdown surely seals the deal, and we are anticipating this cut to ring out loud across dancefloors over the coming weeks and months. competently propping up the release, ‘seizure’ goes on a spacey, bongo odyssey (geddit?), serving up a rolling, dubby drum workout that culminates in a rather impressive snare roll breakdown that’ll have you frothing at the mouth. snatches of female vox and whistles are dotted around the galloping jungle drums, whilst the elevating key chimes provide the perfect musical lift. another slice of completely freshhouse music from w&o!

back on the selector tip, nyc loft trax compiles another volume of really nice deep, chunky and funky grooves! the a side promises a great selection with the first two tracks by kick that funk & bonjour sounding like a 1990 s chicago meets paris reunion! the 3rd track by subtle approach is created using deep dirty sliced and diced samples blended to perfection: stellar work. then there is a totally different vibe on the b-side starting off with a brazilian house groove by dubrazil surely influenced by the maw sound no doubt! next blackdub s classic disco meets detroit piece -melodies of dub- gives us a bit of theo parish or kenny dixon jr. feeling, hot! the final track by pascal cordoba is jazzy groove touched by australia s dj freestyle, who is on the radar lately due to the jordan fields & roy davis jr. warehouse find of -the session- on nu jack city records. you should have all 8 of the nyc loft trax vinyl at this point if not, why not?
