where to now? records are proud to present beatrice dillons follow up release to the widely well received * blues dances*. this three track 12 inch sees beatrice step things up a gear in terms of intricacy, experimenting wildly to add to her already astute palette of timbre and rhythm. face a leads the record with the unmistakable skronk of saxophone cutting and jamming over the skeletal pulse of beatrices signature dubbed out techno landscape. initially the inclusion of saxophone acts as an aural abstraction or diversion to extract a little freedom from the pumping cavern of dark dub techno atmosphere punctuated with the mechanical juddering saw-bass, but as the piece develops and we become deep into the groove the inclusion of wild sax snorts trips us up and become the focus itself as new levels of complex melodic and rhythmic detail become apparent within this otherwise structurally obedient space. taking its cues from rabih beaini, miles davis * big fun* era, dresvn and keith hudson, undoubtably face a is a compelling, complex trip… heads down but arms flailing. face b continues the theme but takes the listener far deeper into the cavern. here the concern is more the effects of space within song, a moment where beatrice allows herself to move away from the floor to find a little more room for playful experimentation. the saxophone is further treated with a plethora of effects to compliment the array of dub signals that scatter and skip around the basin. the record closes with sonnier (walk in the light) which strangely somehow manages to feel jazzier in its components, even in comparison to a pair of tracks riffing on a manipulated free-jazz sax part. it sounds strangely unsure of its world, adding to this whole loosely slung, loping feel which somehow fits amongst the stern, brooding, and efficient synth play. beatrice masterfully manages to create a piece here that grows in intensity without ever increasing in pace or texture, every drop is intended to stir the listener a little more than the last. theres a sense throughout all the pieces of having rhythm imposed or even inflicted upon the listener but this is certainly not a conflict of ideas… there is optimism, harmony and above all - wild groove nestled within beatrices world of mutant shuffle.

geneve based pascal viscardi bring his rich and sweltering textures to saft with his first ep for the spanish label. the swiss producers paradiso ep is already the 9th installment and by no means an odd addition to the family. strongly rooted in soulful sounds with firm aesthetics and blissful melodies, this release is exactly what saft is all about. from the moment the pad in the title track starts riding, paradiso immediately hints to a deserted paradise.
tales from the emax (a2) is a groove laden anthem that will soothe those that are into soulful but firm sounds. on the b side, we find remix work of both originals. swiss house stalwart agnes stirs things up with his thriving rework of paradiso called la charme chambertin mixx. on the b2 cut we find saft familiar jefferson belmondo with a cracking rework of the title track *paradiso* called beach mix. 4 strong, groove-laden cuts that celebrate the saft sound like never before.

after the immersive techno pulse of qindeks effe 12inch, wavereform is thrilled to present the return of rising lativan talent juras lietus to our label for our fifth release. his debut single des-m marked our second release in 2014, and while the artist remains something of a mystery outside of his home city of riga, his productions sport the kind of well-travelled tones that transcend geographical location to deliver an infectious message. the single kicks off with metallic thump of >steiga<, which leaps out from the very start with an addictive chord line and a well-rounded kick. juras lietus handles the progression of his track with poise, feeding in a rich tapestry of percussive elements and teasing the filter on that distinctive synth to give the track a fluid, psychedelic flavour. balancing these elements out is a warm, undulating bassline that injects a joyous energy into the track, while the soul-stirring speech sample should be familiar to any socially conscious dancer. its a production that satisfies the needs of a party-hungry dancefloor while equally delivering the internal reflection that comes with all great dub techno.

vinyl only. the second release from young and exciting hoxton records label from east london features kiril - the ukranian legend who has started making waves outside home country. the collaboration between rush arp & maurice giovannini is another beautiful track with organic sounds that can stir emotions. triptil is a rising romanian star that has already developed his own sound, which can be melancholic at times but never fails to move the dancefloor. radu mirica is another talented producer from bucharest, romania that is determined to make the future in the music industry and judging by this track, he may be well underway.

the virgo ep is the 4th of mutewax’s non-stop output, featuring french artist cømpass. vindemiatrix is a classy, uplifting peak-time track that sneaks up behind you. if you were thinking of leaving the dance floor. think again. spica lays heavy on the kick-drum & thick bass-lines. it’s a mind-winding trip which reveals a mature twist on the classic acid tweets. arcturus bounces joyfully across the dance-floor and picks up the pace with its hard-hitting acid notes and infectious rhythms. porrima beautifully stirs the emotions - the melodic rhythms predict a sweet future, yet it retains an atmospheric nostalgia for all things which must pass.

those with a passion for heavyweight electro and drexciyan sounds have long held french producer franck kartell in high regard. he s been working away on the fringes delivering high-grade material for a decade, and finally got round to dropping his debut album, afterlife, last year. here he delivers a swift follow-up, effortlessly flitting between icy ambience, vector lovers style electro-idm, creepier compositions, and the kind of oddly symphonic, soundtrack-inspired fare that exists to stir the emotions. its a far more fragile sounding set than some might expect, but no worse for it. while theres little dancefloor material on show, kartell s downtempo fare is a cut above most of his contemporaries.

currently causing quite a stir on the underground, the jerome hill remix of marshall jeffersons s trax classic lost in the groove is a complete re-interpretation, solid jacking (hard) house music using the original vocal that s cut loud onto the vinyl and worms inside your head and has been doing serious damage in the clubs and festivals last year. now with all licensing and red tape cleared away, it s set for release. dancer boom boom is actually a collaboration between acid legend adonis and sidney winters, with a mix down by house legend frankie knuckles. this sat on the b side of am a dog on trax records and is rare & obscure to say the least, but once the needle touches the groove you know it s a killer. massive kick drums and mysterious organ scales, this one is a mad mad tune ! produced in 1987 (and sounding like nothing else from that year) it s been given a very slight and very respectful re-arrangement by jerome hill, remastered and cut super loud. strictly limited and if the previous titles on the label are anything to go by, this one will sell out equally quick.

theres no doubt that the apollonia trio are on fire, 2014 has been a whirlwind of berlin studio production, to reigning in ibiza, to dropping their debut album tour à tour to a rapturous reception. but straight back to the label with a new ep, they proudly present breaking talent diego krause. hailing from east berlin, krause already caused a stir amongst the heads with releases on his own label unison wax and co-owned beste modus, unison wax 02 swiftly landing itself a 4/5 on resident advisor and pricking up the ears of the apollonia boys. serving up three quality tracks very much in-keeping with apollonias own sound, you can easily imagine any one fitting perfectly into the later hours of their b2b2b sets. * right about now* establishes its presence with a powerful bassline and solid clap, before deep swirling synths enter, as does an echoing xylophone to truly euphoric effect. the slightly eerie, but mostly intoxicating, * dreams* brings a subtle groove and conjures up those early morning moments, while * manitu* the most peak-team of the three, is a bouncy number full of positive energy and a strong tech-house edge, that will go down a treat on any dancefloor

man of mystery, a sagittariun, may not be the first, nor the last, in a long lineage of techno producers to go undercover and under a veil of anonymity, but the west country artist doesnt use this cloak to stir up any hype, quite simply the music does the talking, and since 2011, has released a breath taking selection of music on his own elastic dreams label. and so the archer lands on hypeltd after only one other foray onto labels other than his own (2014s lost cities ep for secretsundaze).

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…

the efforts of label chief max_mand attic musics own fabrizio lapiana as so far proven to be a potent combination. sharing wax space for the last two releases on m_rec ldts discreet new 10 inch vinyl series, the pair have so far turned in a stirring duplet of some of the finest, fully-formed pieces of modern techno music. now, for the third installment, max_m steps aside to let a brand new outfit take the helm. the mysterious and so far unreleased overall severitynestles comfortably into the a-side with another swollen, undulating melodic arrangement, true to form of what we have seen from the series so far. then on the b-side, fabrizio lapiana offers more of his dark and groovy techno, toned in what has become a signature splash of vintage british-redolent electronica.

here s something to stir the loins of any discerning disco dj: a studio hook-up between veteran producer felix dickinson (fresh from his much-loved outing on futureboogie recordings), horse meat disco and one-time dfa man (and renowned multi-instrumentalist) marcus marr. there s an additional contributor, too: a mystery (presumably big-name) vocalist whose talk-box heavy delivery sits somewhere between prince, george clinton and pharrell. the track itself is something of a summer anthem in the making - an immaculately produced p-funk jam with the additional benefit of a shuffling, house-friendly groove. no details on how many copies have been pressed, either way, you d be well advised to snap up a copy while you still can.

usually found in partnership with blocks on their own narratives imprint, here we find escher flying solo with two beautifully contrasting compositions. deep architecture has already been causing a big stir online due to its wild time signature and off-beat percussive patterns. physically its drum & bass, but mentally its most definitely techno as it pummels with loopy drum insistency. spirit bounce, meanwhile, is a stark and breezy stepper that oozes space and shimmers with emotive synths. its a simple but soulful synthesis many have attempted over the year but only few have mastered... klute, marcus intalex and now escher, too. the return of 31 has been one of d&bs best stories so far this year.

newcastle upon tyne (uk) based turquoise blue presents a very special release featuring four original tracks from non-other than kostas tassopoulos – better known to many as ekkohaus. for those unfamiliar with turquoise blue, the label has been causing quite a stir ever since its first release in 2011, featuring music from household names including laura jones, kris wadsworth, dj w!ld and djebali, among many others. it was clear from early releases on heavyweight labels including morris audio, 2020 vision and liebe detail that this was a man with a big future but, to many, it was ekkohaus album release in may 2013 that defined him as a major player in the game. released by matthias tanzmann’s moon harbour recordings, the album topped many a download chart and was a firm favourite with djs around the globe. this is a landmark release for turquoise blue, which started life as a digital only label but after starting to press vinyl in september 2012, the label has gone full circle with this, their debut vinyl-only release. not only does this release sound incredible but it looks sublime and is as much a collector’s item as it is a dj tool. a limited run of 300 will be pressed on heavyweight, clear marbled vinyl.

argot starts out 2014 with the help of pittsburghs chase smith and his new single, stay. following releases for w.t. records and pittsburgh tracks, the up-and-coming producer hits new songwriting heights with *stay*, an impassioned modern disco tune featuring lauren ojanpas smouldering vocals and a live bass line courtesy of karl ojanpa. smith also provides the swift charge of *27 summers*, a rave-influenced house jam whose banged out piano chords and brass fanfare will stir the dance floor.
