i�m really flattered that they�ve let me release their first full solo release, and i love how they�ve brought out each others deeper and more emotive sides in these 2 tracks. shit robot is a hero of mine. i basically wore out the grooves on a bunch of his dfa stuff from just over 10 years ago, and i�ve avidly bought everything he�s released since. i met him this summer for the first time when we shared the bill at a festival, and was so happy to find that he�s also lovely guy in real life. they say you should never meet your heroes, but i don�t subscribe to that as this meeting led to not one, but two fantastic remixes for me me me 08. the originals are a bright mix of melodically analogue left leaning house, while the remixes zero-in on a punchier dancefloor vibe, with an epic version goodnight, as well a more heads down disco dub.

the house band of bunny �striker� lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of jamaica�s most prominent and musically expressive session players. the shifting core line-up spun off from the soul syndicate and thus typically featured earl �chinna� smith and tony chin on guitar and bernard �touter� harvey on organ. carlton �santa� was the main drummer, but carlton barrett of the wailers band and �benbow� creary were sometimes featured. most crucially, on bass, aston �family man� barrett shifted to fully fullwood (and occasionally, earl �bagga� walker), until robbie shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. the band was responsible for the popular �flying cymbal� style that took jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975, its excellent cuts of cornell campbell and johnnie clarke material mixed at king tubby�s studio - a must for all serious fans of dub.

roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy, but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck, brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s, along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke, sugar minott and the african brothers, and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone, together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy, sammy dread, roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown, with production veteran bunny �striker� lee and sugar minott among the contenders, but in any case, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, he produced a range of captivating work for various producers, much of which is rightly coveted today. �ital rock� appeared on barry�s 1983 lp i�m still waiting, issued by rocktone international, a spin-off of sugar minott�s black roots outfit, based in queens, new york (with a further branch in toronto), the b-side has dean fraser�s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut, rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.

after the huge success of their first collaboration, doorly and el prevost are back for part two: this time the world touring doorly serves up a hot original that gets remixed by red rack�em and el prevost, while el prevost also serves up an original of his own, all on his own no speakers label. the first ep, featuring a lee foss remix, got support form the likes of paco osuna, solomun and groove armada and this second instalment is set to be just as big this summer. doorly is a dance heavyweight who headlines clubs like space ibiza on his global travels, releases on cajual, hot creations and dirtybird and is no stranger to hitting high places in the charts with his big and infectious sounds. as a dj he is energetic and can make a mark on any dance floor, and so will this new tune, �sonder.� it is six superbly deep and atmospheric minutes of warm, rolling drums and searching synths that bring an intergalactic feel next to twinkling keys. jostling percussion brings a little loose funk and the whole thing is sure to lock in dance floors. el prevost then steps up to remix after 15 years of putting out killer cuts on labels like third ear. his music has made its way into the record bags of tastemakers like steve bug, dj hell and steffi and this excellent remix shows off his singular style again. it is a little tougher and more energetic than the original, with sprinkled hits, rumbling bass and pixelated synth lines dancing about up top. then comes red rack�em, the bergerac boss who had a huge hit with �wonky disco bassline banger� last year. it was one of the tracks of the year and has been followed by an equally brilliant album by this esteemed house veteran. his remix here is big, bouncy and off kilter thanks to its coarse hi hats and punchy rubber drums. great vocal treatment adds more wonkiness and broad synth strokes flesh things out into another sure-fire party starter that sounds like little else. last but not least, el prevost offers up a solitary state mix of his own �temper mental�. it�s a hugely inventive track with great synth modulations burrowing deep into your brain as dancing hi hats and whirring bass encourage you to cut loose and shift freaky shapes. this is a strong ep that really packs a punch across four standout tracks.

tutti hill�s �when the going gets rough� was listed on the label of her arock single in 1964 but the record actually played �whoa whoa, baby take it slow�. at last this gorgeous mid-tempo dancer from ron miller and lee porter makes it to 45. the flip is a piano and voice demo from the same stable but garrett saunders� magnificent baritone makes the song a must-have. what a pity he did not record more.

one of the most accomplished and celebrated bands in the field of contemporary, unclassified pop music. almamegretta are masters in combining a wide range of elements such as dub, funk, reggae, world and electronica, all filtered through their own deep southern italian roots. now let�s discover the dub version of ennenne. dub is a unique discipline. a strange and sometimes unpredictable music practice. it was just after the release of ennenne that we decided to take back the multi track recordings and start to rework the music through the mixer. in order to give a new shape to the project, we thought it was a good idea to invite some of the best producers and musicians on the dub scene. following a very natural process, our vision began to take the shape of an international all star event, including contributions from historical dub artists such as adrian sherwood, lee scratch perry, dennis bovell, and actual celebrities of today such as gaudi, vibronics, manasseh, khalab & messmorize, and mario conte one the most interesting producers on the italian experimental scene. a bunch of old and new friends with whom we share the same vision.

as noted on another release (see ropin), cornell campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican singer, and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. he began his career for clement �sir coxsone� dodd in 1956, when rhythm and blues held sway in jamaica, and later cut some ska songs for king edwards. he then passed through the sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at treasure isle, before returning to studio one with the eternals, scoring huge hits such as �stars� and �queen of the minstrel� as the 60s gave way to the 70s. his greatest phase of popularity was them brokered by hit-making producer bunny lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the 80s. the 1975 album dance in a greenwich farm was first issued on the grounation label in the uk. along with a re-working of �stars� re-titled �the sun,� a re-working of �queen of the minstrel� as �girl of my dreams� and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album has the boastful �conquering gorgon� and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the gaylads� �no good girl,� a version of the heptones� �why did you leave me� and a killer cut of the uniques� �watch this sound� (based on �for what it�s worth� by buffalo springfield).

one of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of jamaican music, the paragons have a long and complicated history. first formed in the ska years by bob andy and tyrone evans as the duo of andy and ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of howard barrett and john holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties, following the subsequent departure of andy, holt, evans and barrett made the paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. they had an incredible run of hits for duke reid and coxsone during the mid-to-late �60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before holt�s solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. then, in the mid-1970s, the paragons reformed, cutting material for new york-based labels such as clocktower and clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in jamaica at harry j for bunny lee mixed with work cut at bullwackie�s studio in the bronx, along with re-workings of classics such as �left with a broken heart� and �memories by the score� is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

delroy wilson the original �cool operator� was also known to many as �teacher�. a title given to him as he unselfishly taught the up and coming singers including one youth dennis brown, the art and delivery of singing technique. delroy�s rich tone to his voice added a depth to any song that he chose to sing. delroy wilson (b.1948 kingston,jamaica) began his musical career at the school that was coxonne dodd�s studio one label. after a brief stop in 1969,which saw delroy working for producer sonia pottinger�s tip top label. again producing such hits including �it hurts� and �put yourself in my place�. the 1970�s saw delroy wilson�s arrival at bunny �striker �lee�s door and what would result in a winning formula,scoring hit after hit. it is from this great period in delroy�s career that we have compiled this selection of killer tunes,cut with the drum and bass rhythm kings themselves sly dunbar and robbie shakespeare.such classis as �who care� ,�can i change your mind�,�get ready�,�you must believe me� and the timeless title track to this collection �here comes the heartaches�. an album of great tracks cut with �the hitmaker from jamaica� bunny lee and his team. a match made in heaven�.enjoy the set�.
