combo lulo returns to names you can trust for their sophomore single, digging deeper into the diversified sounds of the caribbean that helped define their debut. while the first single took a jamaican foundation south into the neighboring continent, fusing the sensibilities of rock steady with those of classic afro-latin orchestras, this single goes far east. inspired by the heady and sublime sounds of foundational ska mixed with east african influences, (think buster s islam, don d s addis ababa or further east), the sieve & the sand is a brand new composition within this natural order, albeit with the fortune of different reggae eras and studio styles to draw from. divided into two parts (but also available seamlessly as it was played in the studio), combo lulo s talented players move effortlessly from the galloping shuffle of ska into a deep and dark, roots radics-styled instrumental. its a lovely ode to the original styles of reggae, but also another impressive accomplishment that will surely leave listeners and new fans in anticipation of the shape of things to come for combo lulo.

we are very happy to announce the 13th release of cabrera with two special remixes from the label boss, j.c., “vertigo” record that came out in the summer of 2017. side a comes with a special shed rework. rene is a huge influence for us and we are thrilled to have him on our catalogue. keeping the essence of the original, he made a proper raw dub techno banger. on the flip side, kastil, already part of the family, took “nyame” in a whole other level and made a fresh blend of fierce techno.

antoine harispurus was raised by a robot called v.i.c.t.o.r. the robot took care of little antoine and early on he gave him music lessons and also the right equipment, for example a roland 808. robotic, mechanical precision became significant for antoines music and soon he left the safety of his mothers toy store for the huge european club scene under his new pseudonym golden bug.
this year he releases two songs as a 7 inch vinyl and in digital format on hoga nord rekords. the a-side, “viaje a tenderloin” sounds like the inside of an east german military liaison in 1975 where the tabulating machines haven’t had service since the raise of the berlin wall. on the b-side “hitodoma”, guest vocalist jessica ho plays with her voice in a bubbly way above golden bugs characteristic metallic, world music influenced sounds and beats. the music would fit perfectly in a vast alien mountain landscape.
in conclusion, the music on this 7 inch is the sound of human and robot in close symbiosis - golden bug is music by robot and human for robot and human.

n our extremely talented artist pool we have the luxury of being able to work with local icelandic talent and for our 6th instalment in the lagaffe series we managed cook up a long awaited collaboration with a close friend and producer intr0beatz. intr0beatz has been known in the local music scene for quite some time and became one of the most iconic hip hop producers in iceland with the group forgotten lores. after the scene evolved and took changes intr0beatz reinvented himself as a house music producer. with intr0beatz you never go wrong. a long time hip-hop producer went housey on us, and he got the groove. house and old school hip-hop have a lot in common sampling and chopping old disco/soul tracks is the foundation of both. so this came naturally for him. the four-tracker includes the tracks dumpin (a1), mystery ride (a2), tapas (b1) and desco (b2).

tatu metsätähti and tatu peltonen formed their electro duo mr velcro fastener in the small town of turku, finland back in 1995. in 1999, after a couple of twelve inches, they released their first full length album ‘lucky bastards living up north’ on i220, which was well noted (not only for its hyper colourful cover art by the designers republic). the album took the duo touring in europe and overseas, and led to further releases on labels like stars-music, ali b’s air recordings, solina records, cyber dance and of course billy nasty’s electrix, as well as remixes for the likes of hardfloor, marco carola, dk8, transparent sound and aux88. returning to electrix with their third full ep for the label (and a gap of 13 years!) they have delivered their own unique and recognizable electro sound with two new cuts. ‘a monster in two worlds’ with its electro-funk sound, classic vocoded vocals and grinding groove is a perfect opener, while ‘bakteriofag’ (bacteriophage in english) like its name, creeps up like a virus, infecting the senses with its crisp and shining melody. additionally, there’s remixes of ‘a monster in two worlds’ from silicon scally (carl finlow in his electro guise) and m-twelve (the new moniker recently launched by billy nasty and surface’s nick dunton) to complete the line-up.

the electronic music duo andy cato and tom findlay took their first step in the music scene when they were working together in the music club groove armada. later on they released a couple of big hits, including “my friend” and “superstylin’”.

there are west coast classics, and then there is music to driveby, the third lp from the group that birthed mc eiht: compton’s most wanted. although the group started in the late ‘80s with multiple mcs (including tha chill and boom bam), by 1992 eiht as pulling the group’s vocal weight – supported by dj mike t on turntables and production – and even producing and co-producing tracks. music to driveby might lack beats-per-minute variety, but to fans that’s not a bad thing. across the board, this is mid-tempo, super deep, funky hip-hop, made for cars creeping along boulevards across the west and south, and it’s about as good as it gets for such purposes. just about filler-free, the album struts intensely and with purpose, as eiht throws tales of cali street life at fans for an hour straight, almost without a break. this solo marathon is given a respite only once, with scarface’s guest spot on “n 2 deep,” an excellent hood roller supported by a soulful guitar lick sampled from lyn collins’ “do your thing.” elsewhere, eiht rolls alone and intensely, on cuts like the classic mash single “hood took me under”, the album’s second single and tim dog attack “who’s fu**ing who?”, the hometown big-up “compton 4 life”, and hustle tales like “jack mode” and “i gots to get over.” after this album, eiht released more classics under his own name, and with similar fan worship. it was the continuation of a legendary career and music to driveby still ranks high on anyone’s “west coast legends” playlist.

hoga nord rekords is finally releasing druk 11000! this 7inch is a collaboration between silverbullit, fontan and the bhutanese group aa yang - ensemble. the project took shape during a mythical trip to bhutan where the swedish composer and multi instrumentalist johan ‘the count’ westman who’s living in the country, hooked the altitude sick scandinavian musicians up with aa yang - ensemble. the local monks then blessed the musicians under mystical ceremonial procedures. with protection from the dragon of thunder, druk 11000 has produced some of the most powerful, loving and life embracing music yet to have been released on hoga nord rekords! the songs springs toward the top of gangkhar puensum, bhutans highest mountain, building a mighty storm, noticeable all the way to the scandinavian woodlands!

irenic003 is a cooperative effort by roger gerressen and his well known accomplices sinan alakus and ivano tetelepta. disc one is a collection of novio dub tribe tracks accompanied by an amazing remix by the incredibly talented udmo from australia. known for a string of well received and beautifully produced ep s on analogue attic, udmo took the original and did a nice stretched out rework for the early hours. on the second disc we find a few tracks from the vaults, two raw recordings by ivano tetelepta and roger gerressen and a track done by the labelboss himself..

the 12th installment in the falling ethics series is an adventurous piece of work. tensal and p.e.a.r.l. team up on this split ep to showcase their production styles which are mainly built around crafty drum loops and buoyant synth experiments.
tensal takes care of the a-side where he takes care of one flaming techno cut for the dancefloor which is followed up by two adventurous pieces of electronica.
p.e.a.r.l. also took care of three cuts on the b-side. the opening track “joy of rapture” is a straight forward demonstration of machine heavy techno. “fall before you” is a deep and soul wrenching cut that showcases p.e.a.r.l.’s more delicate side. “red flame” is a piece of horror reminiscent ambient.

tone depth has been making music for many years but he doesnt seem to get older...... he just gets better and better. this is his 2nd release on noir music and i can assure you there’s more to come in the near future. “escape” contains 3 instrumental and very intense tracks. they are all cleverly build for the underground floors. they each have their own special signature and carry that powerful tone depth production level. each track on this ep immediatley made me “escape” into the music, took me on a journey and captivated my attention throughout the running minutes of each piece. i have been playing these tracks since the day i received them track by track and they really do grow on you (play for play) like great music always tend to do.

its been some 7 years since reggie dokes was last seen & heard on a wph release, so safe to say this one is long overdue. our detroit hero took a bit of a hiatus from music production in recent years, but he is back and has been cooking up some serious heat. on wph 004 one of the tracks received a slight edit treatment by fcl and so red d decided it would be a nice twist to do the same on this one. but seeing as san soda was globe-trotting again red d handled the edit duties solo. which is all academics really, because in the end its about reggies unique detroit sound. transpose & jazz is my mistress will appeal to any adventurous dance music dj because they cannot be categorized or compared to anything. they are reggie dokes tracks and reggie dokes tracks are what they are: reggie dokes tracks

last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

keys in the ignition, no turning back: dubfire and miss kitten are about to take us on another late night road trip. and this time there are two very special ways to ride, plotting new routes from where they last dropped us off in 2014 with exit, and presented in miss kittins own artwork, the two long term friends and musical kindred spirits cover a side each with two version journeys youll never forget. kittin jumps straight on the autobahn in a tank-shaped techno hummer. thumping the tarmac down with every gas-guzzling kickdrum, lights blur and trace and the mission gathers momentum as we cruise almost majestically into a brighter unknown. dubfire brings us back home via the trusty widescreen house plains. roads running parallel with the grand, emotional highways he once took as deep dish, the vanishing point is far on the horizon where a vast sky of twinkling stars opens up with a feeling you could ride for days on end. unhurried, restrained and timelessly crisp and futuristic: trips like this dont come about very often the keys are in the ignition, care to take a ride?

wrltd series continue with the 12-inch by maltese producer christopher buhagiar. previously known as n.d (natch records, subself records, reaktivate), now he hides under the name of hail blk. with launching of his own self-titled label, he took a step forward in his creative evolution, producing raw analogic techno on the edge between harsh post-industrial grooves and deep hypnotic soundscapes. now we can hear this kind of magic in original tracks on the a-side of the current ep. on the b-side there are 2 amazing remixes of the title track: the apocalyptic industrial anthem by tomohiko sagae (rodz-konez, hue helix), and the multi-layered hallucinogenic excursion by datura dilema (subsist, modularz).

what happens when one of the most exciting electronic music projects of the last fifteen years meets the pioneer of cosmic disco? the result is stunning and with no doubt one of the most interesting things we have heard in a while. psycho radio was born in 2002 from an idea of the italian producer daniele tignino and sound engineer pat legato, with vocals from british singer leroy c anderson. they burst in the music scene with an innovative sound that took inspiration from the 80 s new wave, funk and electro grooves. tracks like in the undergroun and right stuff brought a breath of fresh air in those years, and they still sound very actual today. 2016 has seen the addition of producer da lukas to the project, with psycho radio now back with an explosive new single called bad reputation. once again with the captivating vocals by lc anderson. the legendary disco innovator daniele baldelli teams up once again with marco dionigi to bring us two stellar remixes that move from the funk infused vibe to their trademark cosmic balearic journey. an essential record for the final summer days.

at last! this one took literally years to piece together. does dennis bovell need an introduction? i think not but in case you dont know, he is a musical polymath, top flight producer, dub legend and one of the finest artists the uk has ever produced. optimo music has worked with dennis before when he went into green door studios and dubbed out golden teacher to the max. this disco plate ep was already in the works before then but various circumstances caused it to take until now to see the light of day

stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.

what if we took you back to your untroubled teenage days, when all seemed complicated and easy to reach at the same time? that is exactly what cassius managed to transpose in 15 again: a carefree music, coloured by some deep songs, like an emancipated soul, but always tormented. the hit “toop toop”, sampled by madonna or david guetta, among others, and the intense “la notte” illustrate perfectly this state of mind of the youth. pharrell williams is present on the song “eye water”, a beautiful ode to our planet and its natural resources, and cassius has got further exciting surprises for you. we’re releasing their third album once again for this summer, a real shot of freshness to relieve you from the heat!

record kicks are extremely proud to present one of the hottest new names on the retro soul scene, the tibbs! proceeded by the smashing single next time , the tibbs debut album takin over will hit the streets on may 20. produced by paul willemsen (zuco 103 / lefties soul connection), recorded at the electric monkey studio in amsterdam using only vintage gear and mastered in nashville by soul veteran bob ohlsson (the guy who took care of mastering for many motown hits), takin over is indeed a breath of fresh air! from floor-shaking soul tunes like dog days , get back tuesday and next time , to the deep soul of wild way and funk stormer suffocated , singer elsa bekman - supported by a super tight big band - will impress everybody with her unique raw, gritty vocals that do not fear comparison with big names such as amy winehouse and duffy. based around amsterdam and founded by a bunch of northern-soul and funk disciples, the tibbs started in 2012 taking inspiration from the golden age of soul music. in 2014 they self-released a demo ep and they also released a 45 vinyl on german funk label tramp records. now, after a few exciting years turning heads and spreading soul tunes all around the country - including appearances at the legendary north sea jazz club and a live performances at national radio 6 - the tibbs are finally ready to make their official debut on record kicks. take notice, because the tibbs are the new name to watch!

good things come to those who wait. the long-anticipated land of light debut, a masterpiece of an album and pillar of the esp institute, was unveiled in late 2012, slowly followed by the gorgeous remixed ii. since then, many have longed for the missing first half of this two-part package, the universe is kind and has finally delivered remixed i. on side a, kuniyuki takahashi (mastering engineer behind seminal esp releases, and legend in his own right) took the bull by the horns remixing flares—a piece of music so entrenched in melancholy, with such fluid performance and production, its hard to imagine anyone taking it deeper—he has unarguably triumphed. on side b, esp institute veterans tambien rose to the same challenge with flares, the bavarians taking a refreshing uptempo approach, a contrast to the swells of guitar and synth. closing the release is the seahawks blissful re-imagination of bell rock outpost, slowly and steadily setting sail into a dusky vision of the scottish lighthouse after which the song was named.

rekids begins 2016 with the launch of an exciting new talent. south korea-born dj and producer peggy gou has been honing her production skills since her days in london. now based in berlin, gou has drawn on her years of djing to help shape a sound that draws on detroit & nyc house, as well as the african rhythmic sensibility and boogie funk influences she shares with early sounds duo nu guinea, with whom she had piano lessons and sought production advice from as her music took shape. in addition to her work as a stylist and fashion producer, gou has also drawn on her art & design abilities to create the ep artwork.
