acid jazz is pleased to announce that it has teamed up with the legendary fania records for our latest 7 inch release. june 1st will see us release ray barretto’s “mercy mercy baby” lifted from his classic album “acid” produced by harvey averne. it is backed by an astounding and previously unreleased instrumental version, which is longer than the released version and has a stunning trumpet solo making it a summer dance-floor cooker. released on a specially designed label, which pays tribute to the first gold fania labels, this will be limited to a run of a 1000.
stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.
first release on supalatino, a fantastic new 12 inch compilation of five hard-to-find floor-friendly latin flavoured club monsters brought to you by the people behind the respected supafrico imprint. kicking things off in style is the truly awesome >meu amigo blanco< from brazilian songstress marcia maria. originally released as an impossible-to-find lp track from 1978, this track on its own is worth the price of the 12inch but theres four equally brilliant tracks to follow. first is ray barrettos brilliant eight-minute latin version of the stevie wonder classic *pastime paradise* followed by the uplifting vibe of spirit of love from the king of latin piano eddie palmieri. next up is the wonderful brazilian fusion of paulinho da costas >love til the end of time< which became a classic on early eighties jazz-funk scene and then rounding off this great comp we get yambus latin disco crossover cover of the classic >sunny< produced by the legendary milton hamilton. top quality - dont sleep!

tagged >the latin motown<, fania is perhaps most famous for its recordings during the coming of age of salsa from the late 60s to the late 70s, when latin (often cuban) dance formats like rumba, guaracha, mambo, son and cha cha fused with big band american jazz and the gritty punch of us r&b in the unique melting pot of new york.
strut begin their programme of fania albums with a series entitled fania essential recordings, tracing the development of the many genres featured on the label from latin soul to boogaloo to descarga. the first instalment, >salsa explosion<, provides a handy introduction to the classic fania sound through some of the labels major artists including celia cruz, mongo santamaria, willie colon, hector lavoe, ray barretto and the daddy of the fania family, johnny pacheco.

fania records proudly presents the release of the deluxe 2-disc set entitled hammock house: africa caribe, produced and mixed by the legendary joaquin joe claussell. this project is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year for djs, dance music fans and audiophiles alike. the project is a perfect marriage between old and new, a fresh take on classic sounds from the fania archives. late last year, fania records hand-delivered the original multi-tracks in a battered cardboard box to joe claussells nyc studio. what came to be was a project of ground-breaking magnitude. what you hear on hammock house are more than mere remixes. each track was approached and assembled differently, each on its own terms. as joe says, >some songs were edited, some were time-stretched...many parts were re-recorded...some new parts were recorded on top.< the first disc features nine classic fania tunes from lou perez, celia cruz, eddie palmieri, ray barretto and more, all re-worked with the joe claussell touch (full track by track notes are on a separate page). disc two is a live continuous mix by claussell, but not like your average dj mixing one track into another. joes stated goal for the mix-cd was to create an epic journey that begins in the motherland (africa) and moves to new york. >i wanted to do a futuristic mix, where stories are being created with soundscapes and tapestries, and segues work as introductions to each story.< never has the past sounded so present!
