reissue - cass mccombs, singer-songwriter born in northern california in 1977 and currently residing somewhere in that state, is set to release wit’s end, his fifth-and-a-half album and third on domino, on april 11th. the result of two years recording in various homes and studios in california, new york, new jersey and chicago, wit’s end was produced by cass with ariel rechtshaid, with whom he also created catacombs.sounds that conjure the colors purple and black, this is his darkest record to date. it seems he is going deeper into the mania of a man buried alive inside his self-made catacombs, banging the stone walls, crying to be let out, and enjoying the quiet away from the outside world. however, he is not a man afraid of his own shadow, for in this environment of complete darkness, no shadows can be cast. this is a world of total feeling. here, words become a catalyst away from the slavery of arbitrary thought and toward feeling.

the process of receiving and listening to demos is akin to the proverbial needle in a haystack - poorly labeled cd’s or mp3’s are handed out indiscriminately like flyers for strip clubs in times square (circa 1970). “i really think you are going to like this,” or “all nude girls,” and “dj ‘x’ played this at space,” or “24 hours live sex show…!!” but in the end, just like the harsh reality of a stripper in daylight, the demos fall well short of anything mildly interesting and certainly nothing you would bring home to mom… until madato… from the first group of tracks he sent it was clear that a nice guy from naples had sent us the needle we had been looking for. “naples may not be a place one would consider to be particularly inspiring, from its outside appearance, chaos, and plenty of junk on the streets - it takes a deeper gaze, beyond, and into madato’s dream world. madato is always looking at what’s beyond the waste. inside his dream box you might find laura palmer making out with ian curtis, charles bukowski writing a fairy tale, or perhaps john nash singing along to bauhaus songs…” file under: trippy disco inspired dance music, not defined by a genre but more of an attitude. post-punk undertones mixed with psychedelic sensibility

one would be curious as to what a track such as this one would sound like. images and visuals floating through your head as you press play, the airy, angelic pad intro induces you into a trance-like state before soothing piano lines and a pitched-up vocal reminiscent of the early hardcore era takes you away. as the drums come in with a half-time feel, it is easy to imagine japanese taiko drummers playing their part. once the break takes hold, a short span of melodic heaven uplifts before the drums take control again.

12inch full of music with a definite sense of place. eerie synthesiser pulses, funk-infused drums and languid guitar-scapes have been part of the musical topology of düsseldorf since the early seventies: and this particular release pays full tribute to that legacy, with jagd auf den hirsch (hunt for the stag) comprising an eerie piece of swampy lazer-forest rock. this sound is also a modern day staple of düsseldorfs nightlife at the salon des amateurs, a small bar attached to the kunsthalle art gallery that is an oasis of hypnotic disco nightmares. the salon is where der räuber und der prinz made their first live appearance in 2008 (when the original composition for moogwalzer was debuted), and both members of the band frequently play there: ralf beck with his bodyrocking club act unit 4 and sebastian as half of art-rock duo noblesse oblige. meanwhile two of the guests on this release - detlef weinrich also known as toulouse lowtrax, contributing words about a ghostly maiden on moogwalzer, and thomas klein contributing drums to jagd auf den hirsch - are both original members of the quintessential düsseldorf act kreidler. salon dj resident vladimir ivkovic also had a hand in the creative clarion call for the jagd auf den hirsch (hunt for the stag). to complete the circle, düsseldorfs new resident and desolat mainstay guti wrote his remix in the middle of the night in buenos aires, as a kind of letter to his new home-to-be. there we have it: a true tribute to a city we love, with tracks for the dancefloor as well as moments of melancholic contemplation.

>les patates<, the fresh new rrygular release by tassilo, one half of pan-pot, is not an homage to french agriculture but a serious techno smasher with high club potential. at first, theres just a nice party atmosphere and … then this rough beat drops in! the small potatoe >petite patate< surprises by adding rudimental elements like the hihat and snare drum always a little late. but you have the feeling you havent missed something yet. this number just sneaks from behind and lulls you in with billowing pads until you sense the final rave sound as a self-evident consequence of it all. the message by g-tech right before the drop proves right - there is not a lack of vibration here! its all about the mixture … and in this case its just felicitous: male choir, clanking cymbals and finally the riff that this track subsists on. tassilo knows how to send the short melody-figure through the different stages of sound design, even though it might have been lively enough without it. this gives the big potatoe >grosse patate< a level of dynamic, that most contemporary techno releases just dont provide.

this is a remix package of legendary 80s kraut rock record >moebius, plank, neumeier – zero set< which have been influenced to many artist .zero set was produced by the half of cluster >dieter moebius<, the drummer of guruguru >manfred neumeier< and conny plank who were acclaimed as one of the best recording producer. conny have worked for kraftwerk, ash ra temple and name a few. original ricardo villalobos remix is 33:38min long. remix is split to pt1&2 to the vinyl release. there are no set date of the digital release at the moment. please look for vinyl!!

new chain is the debut long-player from new york s small black. richly coloured and thickly layered, it is an absorbing, eclectic and obsessive body of work. the brooklyn group have succeeded in melting together locked and popped drum-shudder, gauzy spirographic synths and subtly contagious, half-remembered melody into ebullient bursts of evocative, subliminal and thoroughly modern pop. the songs are equally informed by the rhythmic bounce and stylistic swagger of more left-leaning contemporary radio rap and r n b as it is the submerged kaleidoscopic swirl of the early 4ad dream factory.
