adballons (made-up word from ”advertising balloon”) was a duo formed in tokyo and active only between 1986-88. equipped with some gear (casio cz-5000, teisco s-110f, roland mc-202, roland tr-909, korg kpr-77) and influenced by the music of d.a.f, kosmonautentraum, tommi stumpff, propaganda, the flowerpot men, cassandra complex, this heat, the pop group, spk and laibach, they released just one 7” in 1987 and played some shows in local clubs before disappear and become part of the obscure and inscrutable japanese underground scene. limited to 270 copies on 10” vinyl including the four original studio. everything remastered from the original reel-to-reel tape. each copy comes with a obi strip, an insert with some photos/lyrics/credits and a numbered card.

fouk are finally back on heist after their great ‘kill frenzy’ ep in 2014 and have taken mount liberation unlimited along for a remix. we’ve been waiting patiently for new material, challenging the guys to take the signature ‘fouk’ sound to the next level. fouk’s brilliance has been obvious on recent work for their own label outplay and razor ‘n tape, as well as their respective solo projects. we’ve kept a close connection, teaming up whenever possible for heist showcases, with highlights in amsterdam’s “claire” and paris’ “concrete-. seeing their work and enthusiasm made it abundantly clear that it would only be a matter of time before they’d show us what the next step would look -or better yet- sound like. anticipation ran high but boy, do fouk deliver. the excellent ‘with lasers’ ep still very much portrays their own style of loose, live percussion and many layers of funk, but they’ve expanded their vision and even toughened up a bit. their new taste for grit and an interest in the heavier side of funk is probably most evident on the opener ‘f3000&#8242,,,,,, where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush cosmic synth stabs. title track ‘with lasers’ is more of a classic fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with… erm… lasers. lots of them. the b side ‘see you on the other side’ sets a different pace, carefully blending guitar licks, rhodesy chords and vocal chops into a lovely groove that feels just as carefree and improvised as it feels exciting. swedish synth nerds “mount liberation unlimited” ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy -pepe bradock goes balearic- track where airy echoed guitars take turns with some equally dreamy and evocative pads.

jun kamoda has been a solid contributor to japan’s electronic music scene for quite some time. producing under his illreme moniker for over 15 years & also as member of hip hop trio baleine 3000. he is also a cartoon illustrator for japanese independent magazine ‘usca’.
2016 saw him release ‘the clay ep’ (with *that* physical graffiti tune) on new york’s seminal imprint mister saturday night as well as a track for a dirt crew recordings compilation. having recently remixed clap! clap!’s ‘hope’, jun kamoda’s debut for black acre is set for release in june.
infectious licks and raw drums come together to form ‘blind disco’, an animated production that blends a cacophony of samples into a raucous party jam. ‘ramen funk’ is a moodier cut by comparison, featuring a medley of percussive elements, vibrant guitar melodies and a seedy bassline, until ‘savanna on the palm’ chops up and loops a wailing vocal sample before leading into echoing chords and a twisted groove in a mesmerising conclusion.

it’s no exaggeration to say that geraldo pino and his band the heartbeats kickstarted the whole soul/funk/afrobeat scene in west africa. mixing highlife, funk and jazz, and using the latest equipment, they laid waste to all before them. in 1966 fela kuti was a jobbing musician, eeking out a living with highlife bands. when gerlado pino came to town, it changed his life.
“pino tore up the scene,” he recalls in an interview with carlos moore. “i knew i had to get my shit together. and fast!”

this is a collection of works from british musician gp hall, recorded between 1994 and 1999. for over four decades, guitar in hand hall encountered many styles, jazz, blues, flamenco, rock, folk, and classical improvisation. all contributed to the creation of his unique style. emerging from the british blues boom of the 1960’s, he then followed a long and winding path through various scenes and cultures. in spain, he was influenced by flamenco master manitas del plata before touring europe with liverpool band casey jones & the governors. he was commissioned three times (twice by the arts council of great britain) for original music and was immersed in the avant-garde scene of the 1970’s as an improviser, a pioneer of electric flamenco and a composer of large-scale ensemble pieces. during the 1980’s hall turned his focus to soundtrack music before reinventing himself as the solo performer he is today. with this strong foundation he branched into a tactile expression of his craft, discovering a new style which he called industrial sound sculptures. these sonic compositions are performed on electric and acoustic guitars as well as the six-string bass and are played with various techniques and implements including slides, battery fans, the psaltery bow, razors, toys, velcro and crocodile clips which are fed through sound processors to create a rich sonic environment.

next up on aus music is the welcome return of a good friend and label regular - the ever ascendant marquis hawkes. having released 4 eps on aus thus far, he makes his return in the form of a blazing, floor-focused 2 track ep which sits neatly with previous outings on the label. ‘the basement is burning’ takes it’s name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in hawkes’ home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a 5th floor balcony. having ensured the safety of his family, he made a dash across berlin to make a 10am live show, a few days later with the power back on ‘the basement is burning’ was born. the title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armoured with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. bursting synths are introduced before ducking strings chords bring the track to an ecstatic conclusion. ‘tower block boogie’ then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.

valencias alex font welcomes romanias sepp to acme for the first instalment of mis hermanos rumanos for an intricate split vinyl release limited to 250 copies. acme boss alex font has been producing nuanced house music for over a decade, cultivating a signature style that blends funk, jazz, latin, and techno whilst fine-tuning his skills as a club dj throughout europe for years. meanwhile, uvar and catren founder sepp, who s one of the most influential producers of the new romania minimal-techno scene, has kept equally busy creating and curating quality minimal, including appearances on apotek studio and ada kaleh romania, not to mention an album on uvar. first up, sepps cantecul fusului combines rolling grooves with hypnotic atmospherics before alex font s murph injects a visceral low-end bounce alongside slithering percussion. next, font keeps the reigns with mambo 3, a heady dance-floor number riddled with crunchy drums and a dusty aesthetic before listen to me closes the ep with the eerie phrase just listen to me echoed among crackling ambience for a meditative finishing touch

peripheral minimal is proud to present the new 12inch by the french electronic pioneer, philippe laurent, entitled, phoenix. this will be philippes second release on peripheral minimal after the infectious synthetic classic 12inch, mithra. phoenix is a three track ep featuring two brand new tracks on the a-side, phoenix (featuring philippe s trademark robotic vocals), and, agapao. meanwhile over on the b-side, we have the 13-minute electronic opus and highly representative of his early work, exposition 4, a never before released track from philippes extensive archive, and recorded in 1982. the e.p. is representative of philippe s latest forays into contemporary synth music, but still with a retro futurist edge and influenced partly by german pioneers kraftwerk/late 70s kosmische and au courant electro/synthwave acts, fitting into the current enthusiasm for early 80s synth pop and minimal wave. the ep is presented on white vinyl and limited to 300 copies. mastering by martin bowes @ the cage.

second release from the label offers up broken rhythms, jacking grooves and deep spirituals. hold me explores lyricism within tight repetitious rhythm, on which saxophonist tyrone isaac-stuart explores hook lines and story telling whilst bassist jordan christo maintains control over the low-end spectrum. that he man of hers melds jacking, upbeat tempo with romanticism and melancholy on top, with louis ktisti providing guitar accompaniment. one s own permanent faith, on the other hand, provides for a moodier and more subdued spiritual dance rhythm, which warms one up before the spiritual explorations in would you tell me about you. in this final track, the guitar rhythms provided by jabriel alsuhaimi and spiritual exorcism of the saxophone by tyrone isaac-stuart present a different angle in the approach towards discovering the endless groove.

releasing timeless music has always been one of the main aims of hivern. sometimes, this purpose asserts itself in curious manners. take margot s moderno , a track made in 2003, several years before the label was born. actually, when pepe and giaga produced the piece for a punk oriented art installation, margot didn t even exist as a project. 14 years later, moderno sounds as fresh and contemporary as it can be. it s one of those cuts that chases a very specific idea with a very unconstrained scheme, that knows exactly where it wants to go, but is not sure about how to get there.

long time friends cesar merveille and ryan crosson return to visionquest to reignite their ‘merveille & crosson’ project in late may with three fresh, intricately programmed cuts. visionquest boss ryan crosson and parisian cesar merveille need no introductions, with the duo’s back catalogues featuring material on the likes of revered imprints cadenza, desolat, little helpers and mdrnty. 2011 welcomed the introduction of their ‘merveille & crosson’ project, with their debut album ‘drm’ on visionquest gaining plaudits from industry heavyweights including ricardo villalobos, and after a five years absence here we see the duo return once again to deliver ‘dream state’, a three track ep that oozes quality from the off. the a side is home to title cut ‘dream state’, a production that tumbles and twists smoothly around meandering synths, crisp percussion shots and a bumping low ends, typical of the duos free flowing and evolving production styles. on the flip, ‘guns’ sets to work through pitched down vocal loops, sweeping sonics and rich textures all reinforced by a driving bassline that carries plenty of groove, before ‘time contraints’ slowly unveils itself with a series of off-kilter gliches and pops, delicate pads and sophisticated sound arrangement, concluding yet another fluent and immersive offering from merveille & crosson, and an excellent addition to the visionquest catalogue.

wake up! 009 catches steevio in a lonesome mood. over three tracks the freerotation co-founder cruises through weightless negative space, sketching out contours against a backdrop of deep shadows and warm, melancholic pads. * machlud* opens like a mission statement, sorrowful and barely-there, before moving to the more nervous lounging of * forgotten futures.* on the b-side * green therapy* picks up the pace, bouncing with a lightly kinetic swing. luis remix wrings some raw pathos from the originals immaculate depths. yet it remains of a piece with the source material, rounding out an ep of heady, ephemeral moments.

lost in time continues on it’s path exploring timeless underground house music with number 8 in the series. the ‘last step’ ep focuses on the extraordinary production talents of tuccillo, the italian musician widely regarded for his unblock studio. this record marks a deviation in direction for tuccillo, who is recently returning to his roots, making stripped down minimal dubs aimed directly at the dance floor. lostime008 includes four new cuts which can best be defined as ‘romanian’ style in essence. in fact raresh from a:rpia:r and livio & roby from premiesku are early supporters. the title track kicks things off with rolling percussion with more than a hint of latino attitude. dubby stabs and detroit style chords soon join the party and intricate changes in the drum programming keep subtly lifting the track throughout. ‘changed’ opts for a totally different tact, opening with lush, dreamy pads which evolve alongside rolling snare patterns and bass grooves to reveal a heavily harmonised spoken word vocal. on the flip side, ‘drum engine’ opens with feint, delayed vocal stabs which are joined by celestial, swirling pads, before being abruptly stripped away to reveal a menacing growling bass finally, ‘titled’, takes thing in a more minimal direction with airy pads and acid bleeps panning around the mix, showing off tuccillo s immense production talent
