for mimi music, komplexx (poolside recordings / silhouette noir) has delivered a melodic techno / progressive crossover. this moody tune is deep yet melodious and builds beautifully. it’s just one of those tracks that works, with its genre-crossing coolness and excellent production. the remix is provided by our lovely house-specialist sascha dive (deep vibes, cocoon, raum). the german master turns the original into a brooding techno affair which is driven by thumping bass and sparse percussive elements. the remix keeps building until there’s nowhere left to hide, turning the track into an absolute floorfiller!

next in line to work with underground imprint getme! is uk artist nicky otter, with gme012: i can t really explain (it), a two track release out on 14th march across vinyl and digital platforms. across the ep, nicky ventures between parameters of ambient electronica and big, bad club tracks. nickys outsider sound find its perfect home on london s getme! label, both artist and label undefinable by genre, shape or sound. a-side i can t really explain (it) is a straight call for the dance floor for those after sounds on a more house and garage tip. originally trained as a drummer, nickys percussive talent shines across this bassy number, complete with creeping melody and layered vocal samples for a track nodding to club edits from a nostalgic time gone by. moving into murkier territories, b-side sketch original slow is journey through the darker strains of electronica, hazy techno feels and euphoric ambient vibes. dreamy melodies and carefully mapped out drum patterns meet here, giving sketch original slow an other-worldly feel.

juan atkins and moritz von oswald – the two indispensable protagonists of the electric garden – plug back into the wilderness. ‘transport’ – the new full length effort of the borderland collaborative project – brings together a new set of studio-refined sequences aimed at colonizing some of the dark energy that pulsates through those areas that are thoroughly electrified, even if not ‘on the grid’. ‘riod’ is the first streak to bolt through. the detroit-berlin axis triangulates to a third point which, like the atomic particle that lives in two places at once, flickers between a form of techno-charged ambience and a futuristic club-jazz which cannot be broken down into constitutive parts. borderland remains caught in a state of enraptured stillness, invisibly moving between every imagined future for electronic sound making. the result: a font from which springs serene and exhilarating musical ideas that vibrate with refined energy for sixty seconds in every minute.

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!

le loup prowls a lot by night with his bougs, in château d eau area or in some other parisian african districts. the 2 original tracks seek to express the moods of those meanderings in the sweaty clubs and dark bars, where the players and pimps order champagne magnum bottles and dance collé serré against the walls with some hot chicks. forget the eiffel tower and the champs elysées: this is the real underground side of paris. dewalta was just back from an us tour when he started to work on the champagne magnum remix. but one remix was definitely not enough compared to all the inspiration he had absorbed during his travel. he finally offered us 2 champagne magnum remixes: one filled in with the soul of lake michigan, and the other chilled by the cold wind of illinois. 4 tracks for dance, sweat and feed your soul.

vent is happy to deliver yet another take on stripped back essential techno. stephanie sykes has had the opportunity to entertain many dancefloors since her last ep on vent, and we are astonished with her artistic progression. the sonic imagery is smoky and bass heavy, perfect for those heady dancefloor experiences. and as if the package isn’t perfect already, cassegrain delivers an absolute killer remix with raw, truly minimalistic techno.

from the storming energy of opening cut the key of night all the way through to the deepertripping solar fields its a must-have ep for >those who know<. young uk based producer cleric has established himself not only as a bonafide new talent and key player in the international techno world, but also as a prolific artist on figure. now well known for his crisp, deadly club tracks and rich melancholic ambient studies, in this fifth single for the label he explores his hard-hitting yet luxurious sound ever further. whats immediate about the four tracks on offer here is clerics extremely powerful, yet masterfully controlled bass frequencies. coupled with his addictive, smart and dark 90s-reminiscent synth hooks, we are left with an array of stomping, percussive weapons primed for expansive spaces and killer sound systems.

the vinyl factory has teamed up with french label zone for another rugged techno four tracker, this time from close associate and well established production talent maelstrom. though his name suggests total chaos, maelstroms music belies intention, focus and precision. often marked as exciting newcomer to french techno, maelstrom has actually been making music for over fifteen years. with a cryptic history of aliases and side projects, illegal raves thrown in warehouses and fields and basements, the artist has really come into his own under this moniker. the optics ep showcases metallic techno, acid house, industrial noise and stark ambient sounds, forging smokey machine music for those with a penchant for post punk and a soft spot for the spikier end of the techno spectrum.

a sort of cabaret voltaire for the iphone age, drooids are a collective of three multimedia artists who produce electronic music using improvisational, often anarchic methods. utilizing a hodgepodge of gear both old and new, and not-wholly-quantized, they create a collage of sounds that verges on chaos before slipping back into a dark yet weirdly club-oriented beat. their live shows usually feature multiple guest collaborators, costumes, sculptural props and performative antics. for their debut release on lse we tried to capture the spirit of these shows and recorded over 11 hours of drooids improvising in the studio of the course of one week. those 11 sprawling hours then got edited down to these 4 snapshots, mastered and pressed in a limited edition of 200 (40 with original gelatin silver prints) for our 6th vinyl release.

when i was 10 years old my father took me to a flea market in a very small city up north in sweden, pitea. there was a little bit of everything being sold there: ski equipment, comics, porcelain figurines and vinyl. it was there and then i came across autobahn by kraftwerk. the thing is, we didn t have a turntable at the house we stayed in, on those cold winter weeks so i had to wait until we came back home to give the record a proper spin. in my mind i played it several times and i thought it was amazing. i imagined it was music from the future. what i thought when i heard it for real? didn t like it at all. the very same feeling i imagined autobahn would sound like is the one i get after listening to ishi vu s debut on omena. these five tracks, you could call it an album if you like, are playful, quirky, dreamy and very addictive. like finding a new friend you know you want to keep for a very long time.

shortly after his first ep on dnuos ytivil, sub-division of bristol imprint livity sound, simo cell, neo-parisian and nantes native, puts his second release out on fragil musique. on this one, the young producer asserts his bass-tainted electro influences. highly skilled and very technical dj, but above all open to bridges between genres and eras, the record feels like he conceived it for his own club usage. on the a side, two subtle twin tracks, -reading rashid- and -soko ban-. cycling melodies and hypnotic pads sketch two bass outlines, as simple as effective, that seem perfectly fit for switching from a stripped down techno track to an old jungle weapon. on the flip, hit track -meteor racer- is surprising. a rawer and more stripped down electro piece that lifts the veil a bit more on the young producers talent. those four brilliantly crafted track definitely place simo cell among the french newcomers to watch closely.

kyle geiger returns on his home label with a set of tracks designed to recapture the basic function of techno. it s music to sweat to at a party. additionally, this package aims to capture a sense of timelessness through melody interwoven with a pumping breed of techno rhythms. the title track, homecoming, starts with a bottom-heavy percussive workout, then presses forward with an array of slowly filtering brighter synth stabs. the breakdown sees an arpeggiated synth slowly overtake the rhythm of the track just long enough to build tension and bring things back to full speed. the verge is a very stripped back, drum track style cruiser, which builds tension with a rising distorted pulse sound filtering in and out. just as it seems that the back half of the track will carry on as planned, a running melody comes in and changes the direction of the entire track. the verge (beat tool) is identical to the original, but build for those a little shy about slightly more upfront melodies.

banging two track debut on sound signature from ge-ology. for those unfamiliar, this renaissance man has produced songs for a list of notable recording artists including mos def, de la soul, and even a young tupac shakur. still, surprising to most, his first 2 record releases were dance music collaborations... one with the basement boys and dj spen in 1993. this release sees ge-ology circling back to his dance music roots

ltd repress .. you are not supposed to know that, but the rumour mill is blowing in the wind: to know from hearsay famous dj rainer trueby teaming up with danilo from motor city drum ensemble (aka inverse cinematics) to launch the rainer trueby project. these tracks are more an edit thing, not supposed for official release. both edits are already circulating, and a very limited vinyl seems overdue. a tasty taster by those nice guys!
