game of thrones has always featured excellent music. the opening theme is practically iconic at this point, having been played and covered so many times. composer ramin djawadi’s heavy, atmospheric tunes have always helped set the mood, no matter what tone the show is going for at any given time.

berlin based producer synthek is a renowned name within contemporary techno. besides succesfully running his label natch records, he has been also a resident at the infamous tresor.
for the seventeenth installment in the string of attic music releases, synthek (luca landolfi) comes up with a staggering ep that contains a lot of adventurous drum patterns, bold arrangements and swells of daring fx.
on the a side we find “loser”, which is a brave cut of spherical yet moody techno that uses a buldging percussion line and otherwordly fx to create an ominous vibe. “uneven mind” is an exotic cut with tough drum sounds that uses a hypnotic synth swell that cuts throughout to create an alarming atmosphere. french producer and concrete resident antigone comes up with an uplifting (eight minutes long) remix for “uneven mind” on the b side which is beautifully orchastrated throughout. “faithless” is a percussive cut with intense fx blips.

alexx a-game makes his return to swing ting after last year’s ‘a-game everyday’ & ‘gangsters’ with the soulfully poignant ‘braver’. the 7” is the 1st physical drop on fact magazine’s label of 2016, following well-received equiknoxx & madd again! releases in 2017. in 2015 swing ting’s samrai & platt received a tune from alexx’s manager, ‘braver’ asking if they’d be able to contribute to the production on the track. listening to the stems, it became apparent how amazing alexx’s vocal delivery sounded stripped to just the rhodes & bassline played by frequent a-game collaborator & fellow jamaican vern hill. after adding effects and flourishes the crew began playing the ‘smooth edit’ on swing ting radio shows and at dj sets around the globe.

following lone aka matt cutlers stunning sixth album levitates hallucinogenic joyride through breakbeats, he returns to r&s with ambivert tools the first in a series of eps for the floor returning to hypnotic 4/4 excursions. inspired in no small part by the rich seam of house that he’s been excavating with his fine magicwire imprint, a refreshed cutler delivers an ep stacked with sure-fire bullets, crafted for his intoxicating dj sets. first up is crush mood - crunching drums, lush resampled chords and dulcet female vox combine into a heady, peak-time rush. chroma comes off like a lost 90s anthem, with its shimmering vibes, airy chords and bumpy rhythm track. b-side closer from a past life could well be the strongest track on the ep - hazy emulator ii chords, spiral arpeggios, gooey bass and woozy african percussion that finds lone digging deeper into some of his more esoteric house music influences. ambivert tools finds cutler a true master, at the top of his game - taking all hes learned over his many years of beat exploration and condensing it down into rugged house stacked full of nagging melody / harmony that elegantly pays tribute to bygone years whilst simultaneously feeling fresh and vital to 21st century dance floors.

this man is obviously in love with his drumbox, and so are we. deadly davy kehoe s debut is a beauty, and yet another suprise thrown up from the wah wah wino camp. deft production and sonic understanding combined with a real rock n roller mind set. evokes a similar feeling on first listen like that morgan buckley 12- some years back now, unique. storm desmond is already getting props and radio plays all over. shexy ball control throughout. big tip!

game of chance makes for such potent material on the dancefloor. from the funky bleep techno tones of “planet pan” to the dubby immersion of “divenire”, with the snappy shuffle of “any robots here” to the blissed-out pads and snaking beat of “point of view”. this is refined and reduced dance music that radiates warmth and champions groove, subtly preaching positivity in the most elegant of ways.

after releasing their debut full length album on kompakt last year, hunter/game return to just this with another immersive offering. on the dead soul ep the duo continue to refine their expressive yet subtly arranged sound. the title track unfolds slowly, sculpting the melody, texture and suspense. joey andersons take on dead soul is airy and atmospheric without losing it’s pulsing flow. isolation covers a broad spectrum and is filled with contrasts in which an intense bass interacts with a delicate and breathy melody. balance is key to hunter/game’s music and this ep is no exception

whether it is hip hop,techno, electro boogie, new beat, italo, jungle, reggae, house or chill out. though, all those different sounds and styles do not tear this album apart. it s a bit of a miracle that it feels so flawless for what happens between the appetizing -level one- and the final track -the last march-.

wrapping up a short summer break, speicher returns with a powerful double bill from rising duo hunter/game. its the italian producers second contribution to the series, after having amassed quite a few nods with sneaky club anthems hexagon and bermuda (kompakt extra 83). this was followed by their strong rework of wevals gimme some a much acclaimed highlight of our total 15 compilation (kompakt 340 cd 125). the new material sees them digging even deeper into the hardware circuits while cranking up the momentum a notch or two: opening banger adaptation doesnt feel the need to ease you into the experience, dropping you right in the middle of its frenzied staccato synth throb instead. meanwhile, the path opts for rich, saturated colors and epic melodies, slowly building its case until its ready to blow its lid. these are two extraordinary techno tunes that will command your attention and leave no floor unturned an essential release for both the label and the artists.

the first musical scale on apiafo leans towards raw funk with a sound similar to the famous 70s bands, l orchestre poly rythmo de cotonou and el rego. funk, is the skeletal structure of this record, and provided the opportunity for peter to invite his uncle, roger damawuzan - the famous pioneer of the 70s soul scene – on two tracks. their collaboration on *pas contente* is a highlight on this 100% analog album. apiafo was entirely recorded, mixed and mastered with old tapes and vintage instruments.

celebrated and mercury-nominated uk duo rae & christian released their first new material for ten years in 2013 on night time stories/late night tales after spending the last decade meditating in a buddhist monastery in swindon. this year the label commissioned a series of remixes from mercury rising and mang dynasty (aka ray mang & bill brewster) take on favourite game featuring rising star of the swindon buddhist circuit jake emlyn. mang dynasty focus on gita langley s backing vocal hooks adding a chorus piano motif and stretch things out into an epic nine minute plus main version aimed squarely at the dancefloor (and afghanistan). jake emlyns more aurally-pleasing melodic parts are utilised towards the end taking things up another level to a happy finish. initial reactions have been so strong it seemed rude not to slip out a 12inch on mangled, home of the hits!
