before he was nigeria’s self-proclaimed mr lover boy, felix lebarty was an upcoming musician in the country’s edo-delta region. his big brother, aigbe, was a legendary highlife bandleader, but felix paid his dues playing guitar with thony shorby nwenyi and the collection of stars, along with fellow star mighty flames bassist, willy nfor. perversely, girls for sale was released after lover boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in nigerian music history. it is a collection of tracks lebarty made early in his career, when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less practised.

in the early 1980s, nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. with the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like lemmy jackson, jake sollo, tony okoroji and nkono teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. such was the fate of sony enang with don’t stop that music

mystica tribe is the musical alias of tokyo-based producer, taka noda. drawing on a wide range of influences from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues mystica tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. his first track, meditation stick, was released in 2011 on dutch label sd records, backed by two remixes from label owners syncom data. this was followed by two more eps on sd records in 2013: stars are mine and flowers. artists like gilles peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track. his temple recently appeared on pangaea s fabric live 73 mix cd. in 2014, noda is launching his own label, mystica tribe records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. his recent ep, lizard, was released on his label in 2014. jade eye ep was released on his label in 2016.

after his successful ‘i’m made of stars’ lp last year, michele pinna brings his time traveler moniker back to his chronicles diary imprint with ‘chapter v: chronicles from 1957’. following the label’s concept ‘chapter v’ is dedicated to his mother anna maria and time is being stretched back to her birth, where past and future seem to collide through time traveler’s dystopian vision of techno. a1 opens the ep with an industrial killer groove and time traveler’s distorted vocals prompting to follow him in an out of control journey. a2 rushes in with a more mental and compulsive beat, where synths and percussions converge. on the flip side, we find b1 infused with hypnotic modular melodies and intense rolling analog grooves. b2 concludes time traveler’s journey with its finally crafted, hammering beats, ecstatic bass synths and drum patters.

kiki gyan’s star didn’t burn long, but it burned bright. drafted into the afro funk super group, osibisa, at 15, he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world by 21. ‘life was good, man,’ he told journalist kweku sakyi-addo. ‘too good!’. in 1983 he dived head first into the new york party scene. he took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record feelin’ alright, his third and final solo album. all the kiki gyan trademark elements are present and correct. the album is unique a blend of highlife music with electronic funk and disco. ‘rosemary’ follows the formula most closely and was a hit across nigeria and ghana. but on ‘give it to me’, ‘love to love you’ and the title track, you’ll hear a slicker, boogie-influenced sound that has made feelin’ alright one of his most sought-after albums. kiki gyan would never hit such heights again. his addictions eventually took hold and he died aged 47, destitute and alone. feelin’ alright remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation.

there’s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, “future bliss” comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track “step one” with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark’s tracks is energized mostly by miller’s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. “future bliss” is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of “1987”, the broken beat of “7 billion = 1”, the synth pop of “the last dance” and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this “future bliss”.

hot casa records present togo soul 70 (selected rare togolese recordings from 1971 to 1981). a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings mostly recorded in lomé during the 70’s, a fusion of traditional voodoo chants, raw soul and afro jazz. hot casa records selected 13 tracks, a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country’s recording history, including international stars like bella bellow (who even performed to maracana stadium in brazil), or roger damawuzan, compared as the james brown from lomé, and forgotten tapes and brilliant songs in mina, kabyié and fon languages. many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in togo was at the time, even if the political context influenced their creation.

during the 1950’s american exotica exponents les baxter, martin denny and arthur lyman fused african and latin rhythms with caribbean and polynesian sounds to evoke the sonic equivalent of a tropical island paradise. this 3rd volume of britxotica examines how their english equivalents fuelled by the popularity of hit musical south pacific, attempted to create the same sun-drenched haitian ambience in rain-soaked, post-war london.

building a formidable reputation as an artist with a diverse set of approaches in the field of electronic music, ukranian producer cape cod delivers his debut album on kiev house in a fine display of musicianship. from the opening track -among the stars- (which features constantine on vocal) it s clear that this will be more than a straight up collection of dancefloor tracks. there are indeed some upbeat house tracks to be enjoyed, not least on the razor sharp garage bumper -we don t have to-, but there s also equal space given over to more introspective jams such as -put u down-.

rückblende. der krieg herrscht in kabul. nach einem bombenanschlag steht fuchy vor dem, was einmal sein zuhause war: alles ist schutt und asche und lähmender schmerz. er sieht sich um. nichts ist ihm geblieben, außer seinem querkopf und seiner superkraft, die musik. damit bewaffnet, bricht er auf in die ferne, fremde, ungewisse welt des westens. dies ist der narrative rahmen für die abenteuer des kleinen, kauzigen kämpfers fuchy. die geschichte eines geflüchteten aus afghanistan, der versucht, sich seine neue umgebung nach seinen eigenen regeln zu erschließen - und dabei instinktiv beats von genuiner schönheit rausballert. fuchy ist gezeichnet, animiert, erfunden, eine art orientalische hip hop-variante von bart simpson. aber gleichzeitig könnte er realer nicht sein. weil er voller widersprüche ist. fuchy, das ist der protagonist von -420- und zugleich das alter ego des in hamburg lebenden musikproduzenten farhad -farhot- samadzada. farhot, vor 34 jahren im afghanischen kabul geboren, hat nicht nur mit deutschen top-künstlern wie max herre, haftbefehl, samy deluxe, chefket, karate andi und xatar gearbeitet. er hat ebenso erfolgreich mit internationalen künstlern wie der soul-sängerin nneka aus nigeria, selah sue, der grime-königin ms dynamite oder den us-amerikanischen hip hop-stars talib kweli und isaiah rashad zusammengearbeitet. seit einiger zeit betreibt farhot zudem sein eigenes label kabul fire.
