fouk might have been curating outplay since 2013, but their butterfunk ep is in fact the duos first proper ep on their own imprint. its not that theyve been resting on their laurels: they ve drip-fed a handful of eps on the likes of heist and house of disco over the past few years, and released solo efforts on kolour ltd and razor n tape that stormed the charts. it s been fascinating to see the dutch pair slowly break the mould, moving from heavy sampling in favour to an emphasis on original instrumentation and production. the butterfunk ep is fine showcase of their prowess in the studio, loaded to the hilt with contemporary dancefloor funk. things kick off with the rolling drums, off-beat percussion and seriously infectious hammond lines of organ freeman. title track butterfunk is aimed squarely at the hips with its smooth keys and perfectly placed vocal, while some acid lines give the track a little edge. flip over for the bumping wong way, a chunky workout with a rubber bassline. the finale of the ep is winter, a fantastic slice of 80s inspired downtempo mushroom jazz.

along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, ‘god made the sea and sun,’ was not promoted properly, though ‘everyday wondering,’ for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

perpetually locked into a disco groove, pete herbert has already impressed this year with the splendour of his releases on nang alongside martin denev, but on this new 12inch for riot gear he s stepping out on his own. the record actually leads in with the plush, romantic throb of the yam who? remix of -expresso before the original takes over with a more peppy, borderline hi-nrg approach. on the b side bottin gets to take no big thing to task with a version rich in electro funk synthlines, while the original sports some piano house chops and enough sizzling dancefloor energy to ignite a ruckus in a retirement home.

our fourth 12- vinyl release, again a full 4 track artist ep, comes from young dutchman cleanfield. relatively unknown at the start of this year, we listened to his demo s and signed them on the spot for a vinyl release. they are really that good, and fall into the same category as the output of fouk, nachtbraker, and more..... while waiting on the production of this release he s made quite the entry as newcomer on the deephouse, nu-disco scene with a first digital release on delve deeper, that s still doing really well in the charts. we re really excited to release these super funky, groovy tracks on beautiful black wax.

lsd is an ongoing musical collaboration between longtime electronic music innovators luke slater, steve bicknell and david sumner focusing on psychedelic aspects of techno while emphasizing the cross-pollination of each members style and rhythmic sensibility. personal ties between the three can be traced back across continents and developments in dance music, with steve first inviting luke to play his legendary lost party series in london in the early 90s, resulting in mutual remixes for pioneering techno imprints cosmic records and nova mute. almost a decade later in the year 2000, dave, a native new yorker, befriended steve after inviting him to play limelight in manhattan. over the years, dave and luke would also have numerous encounters, first forming a musical bond in 2009, with dave later co-producing lukes early l.b. dub corp material (roller, 2013).

having kicked the label off back in 2014 and been intermittent in releasing music since, cartulis music is back with the label boss at the controls for another intriguing dive into the realm of leftfield techno and electro. there s a playful bent to the snagging beat and squelchy synths on -horton- that call to mind the wobbly electro of metamatics et al, while -125 blacksmith- takes a slightly darker path without losing that acidic punch. -nael- finishes the ep off on a more experimental tip, allowing the sounds plenty of space to loll about in a dazed reverie that shares the unconventional nature of the more dancefloor-minded tracks.

ltd 2017 repress - as well as steering stripped & chewed, garrett david has been holding down a residency at chicago s smart bar for some time. on a roll following an appearance on distant hawaii, the time finds the producer in fine fettle with a classic approach to deep house clearly born out of the city he calls home. -the time- is a shimmying jam powered by crafty dub processing and a steady hand on the arrangement, while -sea shell- is a more passionate affair that swoons through key changes. the night sea journey remix of -the time- is a more brooding affair punctuated by synth accents for a deeper end result.

astral dust is a 4 song excursion bridging the styles of derek michael and marshall applewhite. this project stems from a live recording of a set performed by michael in 2002. after being tucked away for almost 15 years, the recording was found and sent to applewhite who dissected the performance into fragments and breathed a new life into them. while some portions of this release are distinctly sludgy, the majority is a perfect amalgamation of both michaels and applewhites hard-edge, melodic borderline idm styles. the digital release will feature 2 digital only sub cuts from the sessions.

listening to unknown path s pathfinder for the first time is a claustrophobic experience. it s as if the tracks had been recorded to tape and left to decompose for 10 or so years, then dug up and re-recorded. a thick layer of grunge and an overall murky feel sets the tone for path 0.1 and continues throughout the ep. paths 0.2 and 0.3 add a more upbeat feel to proceedings, as the beats get scattered around like they were in a pinball machine. path 0.4 finishes off the experience by bringing the tempo back down, while all the time keeping the uneasy atmospherics that make this ep a unique and rewarding listen.

dr. love is a veteran and key tastemaker / vinyl junkie on the montreal scene and laura ingalls is a wandering french person of no specific sex who has recently landed in the french canadian city and they both bonded over their love of anything disco and poutine, the main local dish which consists of potato, cheese, gravy and maybe sometimes added meat! dr love likes to dig but doesn t really produce while laura ingalls is not the most efficient digger and only seems to unearth old folk and obscure arabic music for their personal collection but has serious production skills.

silencio celebrates the first year of the label with a double-pack vinyl aptly titled uno. comprising of new and established artists, the tracks on uno collectively summarize the the feel of this label s year, while giving us a hint of what to expect in the year to come.

it’s time to celebrate, nothing less than 50 releases spread along 17 years of existence. for this very reason we have planned this awesome remixes pack, split in two ep’s based in the limited clear vinyl pattern series originals.
the first ep comes with remakes by the hands of silent servant, kanding ray and cassegrain.
silent servant provides an always dark, always monotonous, always semi industrial and stripped down rework of color, a wonderful mixing tool. while kanding ray ads floating pads and flanging sequences taking the original form to cosmic new age territories. cassegrain focuses on the beat content of texture, making an almost strictly percussive workout aimed straight to the dancefloor.

iron curtis is back on hudd traxx with the second installment of his lights ep. much like the first round that dropped earlier in the year, the man like johannes paluka is on sterling form, dealing in the kind of refined yet earthen, deep but punchy house music hes built his name on to date. spectral is the consummate opener, deft piano chords and rock solid drums with additional dubby fx pulsing through the mix. well well well is a sunnier affair aiming for that euphoric terrace moment, while see ya brings a rough swing to the party with a cosy, intimate line in soulful sample licks. l&p finishes the ep off with a warm, acidic bassline and more of that deep diving beatdown business.

left ear are re-introducing another ten lost tracks from nicholas georgieff and virgil work, st louis basement electronics duo workdub. the release spans material from 1989-95 and includes recordings from their sole lp and both cassette albums. workdubs music hardly fits into a vacuum and some might even say it’s otherworldly. tracks like reach for the stars and lunar module reflect dreams of space-age exploration, all the while their investigation into drum machines, synthesizers, samples matched with their organic live instrumentation work to create a unique atmospheric dubbed out sound.

seattle artist, and from 0-1 co-owner sone, issues his debut vinyl ep, auroras. aptly titled, this ep embodies the characteristic ethereal nature of these light formations seen in the far northern and southern hemispheres. deep heady atmospheres, and constant driving rhythmic motion perfectly embody the artists vision. australis opens the ep with hypnotic rhythms and enigmatic textures. milkplant continues the theme while ratcheting up the energy level, and injecting a touch of grit. borealis brings the funk with undeniable groove and tracky percussive power serving as a great dj tool. uk artist operator (aka rich jones) turns the focus with heavy driving force, and an organic, acidic chug.

every once in a while a record comes along which is a little bit special, a record which stands the test of time, bringing the same reaction to the dancefloor now as it did all those years ago, and dont you want my love is one of those records. almost four decades after its original release in 1979, the record has become a favourite with the glitterbox crowds, creating a seminal moment at ministry of sound when david morales dropped it at the party in march 2017. now debbie jacobs timeless classic lands on glitterbox recordings for a special vinyl package including a re-edit courtesy of disco veteran dimitri from paris.

banoffee pies records continue their musical exploration with their latest sub label output otaku. as the title suggests, otaku provides the banoffee crew the opportunity to focus on another area of expression. “music for home” will be the focus and tagline for this imprint which will showcase a range of expertly composed live drum elements while travelling through the spectrum of leftfield electronic music.
the first instalment comes from a new and blossoming artist marenn sukie, first featured on the parent labels limited series. this time he drops a six track delight spanning the moods of trip hop, beats, and chill out in a bonobo esque fashion, intermittent head nodding included. with love banoffee xx

after a feature on steffi s fabric 94 mix cd (and the accompanying dolly deluxe 3 release), late night approach debuts on klakson with a hyper funky electro twelve. the two tracks on the a side both show machine music that s simultaneously human, whether it s the melancholic shards of melody buried under -clarence mews- commanding rhythmic pulsations, or the beautifully striking chords on -luvquest-. however, the b-side takes us to gloomy subterranean pastures with the uptempo banger -primo-, while a2 -kit- crosses over into broken beats but still keeps the same shadowy atmosphere.
