lsd is an ongoing musical collaboration between longtime electronic music innovators luke slater, steve bicknell and david sumner focusing on psychedelic aspects of techno while emphasizing the cross-pollination of each members style and rhythmic sensibility. personal ties between the three can be traced back across continents and developments in dance music, with steve first inviting luke to play his legendary lost party series in london in the early 90s, resulting in mutual remixes for pioneering techno imprints cosmic records and nova mute. almost a decade later in the year 2000, dave, a native new yorker, befriended steve after inviting him to play limelight in manhattan. over the years, dave and luke would also have numerous encounters, first forming a musical bond in 2009, with dave later co-producing lukes early l.b. dub corp material (roller, 2013).

the berlin based gel abril kicks off his new closed circuits label in a full form presenting a strong record by talented polish artist oskar szafraniec, a crafted producer, known by his latest 12” on rawax with ricardo villalobos, eps on murge recordings, cyclo or collaborations with pier bucci. for the debut release on closed circuits, oskar has collaborated with the swedish very addictive duo and has delivered his best work to date, a music piece called “borderline”, filled with lush vocals and hypnotic pads that kicks the label with a proper bang.
on the a side - the label boss himself, gel abril, turning “borderline” into a burner, with his very own distinctive groove and effected vocals, surely to be one of the main tracks for 2018! on the flip side, already mentioned original mix of “borderline” and another collaboration by oskar, this time with legendary chilean master pier bucci, bringing minimalistic experimental goodness, perfect for those special after hour moments we all love. gel abril said: “listening to borderline for the first time it just blew my mind and gave me that goosebumps feeling you rarely get with most of music out there these days, i felt very inspired remixing such an magnificent vocal, it is one for the books!”
from the irish techno front line , rlsd land again with a heavy batch of dancefloor pressure. jon hussey has been one of the islands most celebrated djs for the best part of 20 years and makes his long overdue debut as a solo artist with dark motif. his deep understanding of the music is on display as he delivers an immersive techno cut with acidic touches & crisp bleep techno character. takaaki itoh steamlines the ideas into a pilerdriver suited for the peak hours. on the flip fran hartnett grinds out a typically floor burning track loaded with his trademark poly-rhythms and modular bleeps. rory st john rounds of proceedings with an ever shifting rhythmic workout which has an off-kilter sensibility guaranteed to make more adventurous floors freak.
dancefloor munitions aplenty with this release from rlsd. 4 great tracks with plenty of potential. rlsd 001 finally drops, featuring original tracks by doug cooney, pgj and jonathan k, along with a lee holman remix. in long established tradition, the first outing by dublin based techno label rlsd records has indeed been a labour of love. with small quantities already in all city records, it’s firing on all cylinders and has been well worth the wait.
mirrored, triple-gatefold sleeve housing bevvie of unidentified, amazing, terrifying, sumptuous & sexual sounds. another bolt from depths of genuine obscurity. psychotronic, mind-matter interactive device which is activated by approaching listener.
earthlings choice of name is as self-confident as their performance. the japanese trio defines itself as a worldly representative, capable of creative exploration without limits. the group calls their first album dance to express the fullest flowers of rhytmic movement, attending to both physical and spiritual needs.
after the club tropicana sounds of bang the bomb its time to roll the sleeves up and get down to the business end of this trip. touching down on planet subturanus in search of the real underground shit light sound dark do not disappoint digging deep into its core and excavating strange alien like sonics which had previously been lying dormant.
so what is after the void ... we bang the bomb of course with a lady in a thong surrounded by snakes and hand grenades, obvious really! having been away for some time it appears that a light sounds dark spring is in the air. en route to their next destination (rumoured to be a dark subterranean world full of nasty mutants danger electrified tracks out this summer) with arms out the window and the mothership roof down, its full steam ahead and proper european dance music time. not really train spotting as before although a couple are a bit off piste like maltas very own ian dury by the name of iain richardson rapping about sitting on a green bus! much more like it however are classic italo covers of big in japan, gloria, a wonderful new wave version of falcos euro smash der kommissar and the thoughts massive german hit wait a long time sounding like some long lost talk talk record. light sounds dark do some minor tweaking (going for that natural look) to big beast anthems axodrys you and colme 111s you take me high (early euro take on chicago) and for lovers of something a bit more funky theres some groovy goings on from kraut funksters epsilon urging people to leave the city which might not be a bad idea if the water runs out.
light sounds dark combine forces with fellow marshmallows psychemagik on a ride to the other side and as one would expect from these two a variable treasure trove of a selection plucked from all corners of the known galaxy and far beyond.
dj madd, has a dirty secret. a secret he has managed to keep under wraps for half a decade. after a host of therapists and addiction councillors i am saddened to report dj madd has lost his battle with crunk. with a strong career carved deep into the flesh dubstep, hungarys primary export spreads his wings even further to present his new matching hat & trainers persona: random person.
nice price deal !!! shree bang special: this is an angular and unrelenting dose of hip hop acid. crunching diplodocus drums stomp holes as tsunamis of grinding bass level the remaining city-scape. the remaining survivors are driven into the mountains by the huge waves of synthetic noise and the threat of a rave induced frontal lobotomy.
way ahead of its time and quite incredible to imagine such a modern sounding record could have been made so many years ago... this cult new wave/dance cover of the doors classic was taken off the first of the two long players that la synth band moebius (not to be confused with german electronic maestro... dieter moebius of cluster and harmonia fame ) released on moonwind records, 1979-1980.
wonderful 1970s p.c.p inspired 20 track. compilation featuring a highly charged mix of psych funk, prog, afro, glam, cosmic, rock and disco. some very rare pieces on here such as the cosmic reggae inspired 360 degrees, the groovy psych prog of the creative craniums and the raw prototype psych funk of kid rock (not that one). others will be better known to lovers of a more progressive dancefloor such as soundforce and diabolic man which has long been a big spin for dj harvey and lovefingers alike.
for our fourth installment, we?ve chosen a band best known for their tame early 80s repertoire. mention the song ?celebration? and your geriatric grandmother would know you were referring to kool & the gang?s biggest hit. but even though we at le smoke disque have nothing but love for the band?s late 70s and early 80s producer, brazilian jazz legend eumir deodato, we want to show you the influence robert ?kool? bell and his compatriots had on the world when they burst on the scene in 1969 with their self titled debut.
after the success of our last offering ? jump back, imitations, interpolations and the inspiration of james brown ? we thought to ourselves, well, jb is the godfather of soul, the minister of super heavy funk, and all that? but we love all sides of the funk spectrum. which other heavyweight of the funk movement has inspired countless others... but has yet to receive his fair dues? we didnt have to look further than lou raglands awesome hot chocolate album and revisit his interpolation of sing a simple song ? messin with sly ? to realize that the answer was obvious. we re talking, of course, about slyvester stewart, aka sly stone, the vallejo, california raised funk phenom whose output with his family stone certainly rivaled that of jb and his many disciples.
