lord of the isles four-track “infras” ep, on the barcelona imprint lone romantic, demonstrates macdonald’s continued mastery of tone and timbre, mood and groove. the title track kicks off by intertwining stringed synthtopia with an acidic staccato grounded in a rich low-end pulse. “w5 alpha” continues the all-enveloping warmth of “infras” base layer with a deliciously disparate palate of sounds, driven by a celestial arpeggio and a dusty collage of breaks. the b-side sets the listener loose in a garden of synthetic vines that pierce the long-decay smothering of bass with “q-bit”, a track that maintains equal kinship with the bouncing exploration of a dance floor as with the cool tones and discrete resolutions of an henri rousseau painting. “three times eleven” reads as a tribute to macdonald’s early fascination with john carpenter and vangelis soundtracks, combining emotive synth arpeggios and cyborg vocal washes in a fly-by depiction of an eerie and beautiful sonic landscape.

echocord’s colour sub-label returns early june with a four- track ep from eindhoven’s albert van abbe in the shape of ‘klangbilder’. dutch techno artist albert van abbe has nearly two decades of experience under his belt in various forms of musical and visual expression, releasing on his own vanabbe imprint, figure jams, semantica and no comment, as well as playing live and djing at hot spots across the globe such as berghain, tresor, dgtl and awakenings festival. ‘klangbilder 1’ leads with a robust rhythmic drive, employing bumpy toms, shuffled hats and lumpy kicks at its core as vacillating synths, tension building drones and menacing pizzicato strings develop throughout. ‘klangbilder 2’ takes things deeper next, retaining the dusty drums sound of the previous cut whilst stirring in airy ethereal pads and choppy, resonant stab sequences. ‘klangbilder 3’ kicks off the b-side with modulating synth whirrs, emotive organ tones and a muted drum tones throughout before ‘klangbilder 4’ closes the package, taking things beatless and cinematic via emotive synth leads, droning subs and expansive echoes.

derek carr has flown back onto the radar after reissues on ben boe s for those that knoe imprint and a string of newly released music through 2017 and early 2018. in true craigie knowes spirit, derek has been drawn off of the beaten path to supply a wider variety of sounds than you would usually expect to hear from the irish producer. acid, techno and detroit electro tinged sounds throughout. tip!

allfeelings is releasing a 12- in dedication to his love for early dub techno coming out of berlin. the idea behind the title “untitled” is to give the listeners more space to interpret the tracks themselves rather than being distracted with any track names. as allfeelings music label is about the amalgamation of sounds and rhythms to bring about a visceral experience, this can be observed in the african inspired percussion on side a and the subtle changes and movement it has throughout its length. side b focuses more on easy listening with sounds and dry textures meandering slowly demanding the listener’s attention at all times. the other great thing about this record is it works really well pitched down which can be used to great effect during warm ups and after hours. this release has the support from ario and o:utlier from astral industries.

this is a debut release on vinyl for spanish based jordi navarra whose musical oeuvre stretches between “surf, hippie / space rock and crude electronic music” often different yet coated in tons of reverb and echo for “it’s final catalepsy”!

quarion is back on drumpoet with an enchanting new ep that leaves nothing to be desired. cobblestone takes the dancer on a deep sensual journey, builds up continuously and subtly into a truly emotive peak. sunday night pt. 2 tops it by captivating with rhythmic chords, which remind of the early 90ies. jamaican morse is a driven drum track, spiced with dubby sounds and a higly addictive beat. once again, quarion proves his outstanding quality.

“a dreaming island” is an elegy to hedonistic isle living , drifting in and out through 6 balearic-tinged varieties all referencing various styles of early to late 90’s house music & new age tropes.
on the a side, you’ve got a prelude of sorts in “a storm” followed by the panpipe delirium of “organ of evening calm” while we signal halftime with the breaks’n’bouncey moves of “a dreaming island”.
b side gets trent-y with the beautiful “mermaid dive”, then gets heart wrenching thru the midi guitar shredding of “awake my friend” and sails away with the conclusion “a sea”.

instincts just a feeling is the pure embodiment of an early 90s detroit techno record. originally released in 1992 on instincts decisive record , not many copies managed to get outside of the city of detroit. within the melodic strings, 808s, and loosely swung samples - you can feel the spirit of these early days and of this young producer finding his sound. meticulously remastered by josh bonati from the master tapes for this 2018 issue.

mathias schaffhauser, founder of german label ware records debuts on third ear with a 3 track 12inch. this is big-sky, expansive, driving techno even the beatless version of grad minus 12. mathias schaffhaeusers ware records had a very recognisable sound. it was one of the defining labels of the cologne sound, most associated with kompakt these days. but in the 90s and early 00s, ware was as significant a label, especially for djs. this release is very much a good example of that sound, still sounding fresh and bristling with good energy.

a true rarity from salsouls vast archive here, one for the bonafide boogie heads out there. this has gotta be one of the rarest surface records in existence, 3 cuts of that amazing early 80s funk that only surface can do! a licensed late 90 s pressing of this particular ep became highly sought after and has since been impossible to track down for even the most dedicated diggers. 3 full length jams presented here, including a wondrous mix from the legendary shep pettibone of the classic falling in love, also included are the previously unreleased stop holding back and when your x wants you back. this whole record is pure heat, one for the aficionados. properly licensed, wonderfully remastered and reissued for the dancefloor! you re not gonna find a more solid, well rounded example of that killer post-disco, electronic funk than this collection of cuts. essential. snoozing not advised!

love circle returns for a second release, digging deep into the misty past of golden era disco and finding rare gold for the reissue market to rejoice at. this time it s the work of barry blue and two projects he produced in the early 80s, lovingly re-edited for maximum dancefloor pleasure by velvet season & the hearts of gold (aka gerry rooney and joel martin). first up is surefire party starter breakin in by javaroo, and on the flip its low down seduction workout love the way you love me by marti cane getting a fresh airing for all vintage-minded dancers and djs.

originally released in 1983 stop bajon (primavera) became a favourite in rimini discotheques, balearic islands and even chicago during the early house days. it was an anthem on what went on to become the italo disco movement. the vocal mix is still revered and played to this day by dj s such as dj harvey at his mercury rising night at pikes, ibiza. this special limited edition release from best record italy features for the first time the original acapellas (tracked down during tape restoration) plus the song stadera that was available only on the first italian pressing and of course the original extended club vocal and instrumental.
