spain s javi bora has been steadily carving out a name for himself over the past few years holding up a residency at the infamous, now late space ibiza and its kehakuma parties, as well as racking up releases for elrow music, suara, robsoul, 2020 vision and moda black. here though we see him paired with fellow spaniard for a new ep set to be released via london s fledgling spilt milk recordings which has played host to material from the likes of italoboyz, alexi delano and of course its founders tred benedict and st. bernard. title-track bounze takes the lead on the record, laying the foundations with snaking synth sequences, voice atmospherics and robust rhythms before hector moralez and katal step in on the remix. the pair reshape bounze with their own stripped-back distinctive style, opting for floating pads, heavily swung percussion and snippets from the originals spoken parts. ritual rights follows and lays focus on arpeggio 303 tinged bass hits, crunchy drums and subtly unfolding synth leads that ebb and flow throughout the record. the 002 then rounds out the package with dubby stab sequences, soaring pad swells and gritty, energetic rhythms

longtime favourite mutt returns to fokuz recordings with the sinnerman ep featuring tedder. on the a side we find right & wrong, a dub infused roller with classic dubby vocal cuts and fx. on the flip the ep’s title track brings forward a classic two step rhythm which underlines an iconic sample.

rfbcolours 004 is aimed at the dark, jazzy smokey affairs. from the off u can see the imspiration fro the ep title with the a1 track from sombro and embezzlement society capturing a low end, horn sampled groover with rough claps and an undeniable groove. georgi barrel delivers again with something that will warm up the coldest clubs or capyure you on sunset terraces. long island sound hit the pianos hard on the slower paced but equally as grabbing and tense -grit-. label owner jamie trench rounds off with night lanterns which is a track thats been waiting for a space on wax for a good few years now and fits beautifully with the rest of the ep.

london s trelik returns to an artist perfectly in tune with the current stance of the british house and techno institution. och has been grafting in the european underground for more than ten years shaping out a truly formidable back catalogue. he first appeared on trelik with whalesong in 2011, while he s also contributed to baby ford s equally revered pal sl label on more than one occasion. in addition, highly-regarded outposts such as all inn, systematic and bass culture have all given och the stamp of approval, while his own autoreply label has continued to be a vital facet on the frontline of the scene. this latest three-track ep finds och on sublime form, working to a crisp, classic house template with the uncluttered precision one expects from a trelik release. the title track struts proudly out in front with its hooky dx7 lead, while -more journeys- builds up to a tougher, psychotropic blend. -sunday love- provides a perfect soulful tonic to round the ep off, rich with warm keys and irresistible shuffle. mastered at d & m.

as icelandic techno receives recognition like never before, so nonnimal steps up to ae recordings with a fine ep that sports many of the hallmarks of this particular corner of scandinavian culture. there s a spacious, dubby minimalism that pervades throughout freyja, but what really sets the record apart is the considered deployment of found sounds, heavily processed and sticking out in the mix to inject some unpredictable energy into these largely calm oceans of rhythmic hypnosis. even without such decoration the music is exemplary, as on the haunting lilt of the title track with its subtly shifting pads tuned to the emotional maximum.

with its tenth dmt release, philippe petit drops energovill, a big room techno bomb driven by a repetitive synth pad and a dreamy distorted saxophone line that will leave nobody indifferent. philippe then strips down the track even more to deliver a dub oriented, beat-heavy version of the track. on the other side, ubx127, from the figure stable, is on remix duties: he takes the key elements from philippe s versions and turns the title track into an unforgiving minimal techno attack. philippe closes the ep and reworks energovill once again, this time into a melodic, atmospheric and dreamy beatless version.

now, if there was ever a record title that could make you look twice its gotta be this seminal slab of jacking chicago mayhem from maurice joshua & hot hands hula. released in the golden year of 1988 on the legendary trax label which was already in full flight and on a major roll at the time. it could have been easy to overlook i gotta big dick because of its (mildly) humorous, tongue in cheek title, but don t be fooled, this is one sleek, charged acid weapon, an early blueprint for the incoming ghetto house scene out of the chi perhaps? if you re somewhat prudish or easily offended by the lyrical content the guys were kind enough to include an instrumental version that jacks in all the right places! also included on this ep is the stone cold classic this is acid which was co-produced by lidell townsell that became an acid house anthem all the way from illinois to ilford. a true school chicago jam indeed! finishing out the ep is the almost apocalyptic acid of -feel the mood- that features a rap from kool rock steady, the combination of twisting 303 s, church-like organs and synths and kool s razor sharp rhymes make for a pretty heavy concoction, use this one wisely damage will occur on the dance-floor! remastered in conjunction with trax records, fully legit, now is the time to revisit a cornerstone of classic chicago house music, often imitated, never bettered!

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

love notes from brooklyn offers up this platter from a very exciting new brooklyn artist, subtenant. as it says on the tin, the artisanal acid ep is heavy on the 303 squelches and emotional content. each track has a unique pairing of soul and heavy acid funk. evergeen soul is the clear lead track here, using a female snippet to keep this otherwise tough little number dancefloor friendly. this track is then reworked by detroit underground darling, d marc cantu, who pitches things up into funky rave territory. the flip side sees the title track feature the most soulful chords on the entire record, and then on the b2 the artist himself takes to the mic on know how it feels. this whole ep feels live and direct from the brooklyn underground.

rotterdam based 25 places are back on dirt crew with a bang! since their love more release in 2015 the boys have been hard at work and have just released an ep for chez damier on his prescription records sub label balance. the bounce begins with party in the hills hosting a huge kick, loopy rhodes, squelching bass, ragga flavoured vocal and squeaky lead, its straight up good times right from the get go. an infectious groove on this one! closing title song heads into deep soaring territory, its forward house beat and pulsing synth lead intertwine with loose tropical percussion and a rhapsodic horn hook. on the flip we have laurence guy who does not really need an introduction anymore, the man has been all over the place since this years releases on cin cin, outplay and the imminent church where he dropped two big eps bamboo and kojak. here he takes on the soulful deep chicago house of 25 places and turns it into a 90s breakbeat acid galore of ecstasy tingled uk house. 25 places wrap up the rave session with backyard stories, a raw and bouncing, bass face inducing jam. uplifting and dirty in one stroke, its thumping kick and feverous melodies make it impossible not to move.

manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record’s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘ground zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘alpha decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, ‘phase two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘ascent’. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘distant resonance’, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

saint petersburg summers are an open window for a never setting sun. -white nite- sees the untitled gear collective paying tribute to this season where they reside. the title track follows the sun s behaviour stubbornly locked in groove, while blinks of bright rhythms wax and wane. -just better- and -it s wonderful- bend between hooks and ambiguous tones, shining through as two reflective dance songs, yes, there is singing in both!

blawans new side project bored young adults is up next on will bankheads label the trilogy tapes. the shy dancers on bungalowdorf beach features some restrained and slow burning techno experiments that differ from jamie roberts more usual hard-hitting sounds. the seething title track treads the same path as kassem mosse or vactrol park. the fentanyl techno of but we need this bench sounds like an old regis record played on 8, while devoted fans of the young uk producers sound will get something a bit more familiar on the menacing hypnotic techno grinder check up from the neck up.

2016 repress - r&s welcome another newcomer to the family. with only one release behind him on hessle audio and a wicked remix for warp (the hundred in the hands) blawan finds his new tracks in demand from the likes of james blake, jackmaster, untold, ben ufo, ramadanman and pariah. the title track is already creating a bit of a stir from its inclusion in a few high profile dj sets, but all three tracks raise the game for this young producer. the whole ep is filled with an honest, infectious energy, just like his dj sets. you cant pigeonhole this as >post< anything, its pure, stripped down, club music. sometimes drums, bass and acid is all you need.

having made his label introduction with his remix of label newcomer villete’s “rillia-, darand land gets to spread out and show off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut ep for the label, ‘discover you’. the title track is classic darand land, with bright piano chords, buzzing organs and a thick chicago house bass line. siren-like pads fade in and out from the periphery, as electrifying percussion elements come into play. frank & tony take a turn and apply their signature style onto the former track, adding a chunkier kick with bright as day claps and hi-hats to propel the track through the opalescent haze draped over the melodic elements. on the flip, “marcela’s sense” is a blissed out, head down late night affair. cosmic pads swirl around glistening keys and repressed organ chords, as toms bounce among the steady hi-hat ride, lulling the listener into a state of euphoria. the ep closes out with the atmospheric, peak time detroit house cut, “souls awash-. a serpentine bass line runs the show amidst swelling pads and in-your-face kicks and percussion. as with all of his productions, the track shines in the smaller details that float in and out of focus throughout, lending the track’s weightier elements an even greater sense of gravitas.

for his maiden voyage through space, shan (victor shan, if it matters to you, and it should) offers good to me, a pair of revelatory dancefloor productions inspired by many a long night and early morning spent at the legendary frankfurt institution robert johnson. a finely-tuned specimen of durable, architectural sampling, the 12” title track runs a rigorous course of breakbeat rhythms and classic chords while a diva’s pleas are made and answered within seven minutes of perfect primetime rave. on the flip, shan churns through metallic stabs and primed drum sequences for the devious “version 1.” shan spent close to four years perfecting “version 1” through various dancefloor demos, no more evident than in the stunning arc of this sought after jam.

video for the title track “mango bay” was played for hours over stream by one of the top dota players rtz, achieving legendary meme status over night. “rush” and “rocky bay” are wrapping up the a side carrying faster tech grooves, while still maintaining the organic component (warmth) with bass, chopped vocals and woodwind leads.
b side starts off with “calypso”, one of the earliest x-coast productions - a steady house groove made from layers of keys, trumpet stabs, rich with hats and ghost snares - perfect to get the party started. being the last track, “don’t stop” is a hidden gem of this ep - what seems to be a hawaiian steel guitar classic, quickly transforms into a floor stomper, it’s a house beat reinforced by a classic rolling break, hammond stabs and samples of sterling void & paris brightledge’s “it’s all right”.

as a label who encourages exploration and collaboration, it was with great excitement that we received the new project of these guys. mainly, at first because you find here the perfect amount of atmospheric elements with sustaining rhythmic. both tracks fit in many situations, from building excitement and tension to creating a very special moment, using beautiful voices. in those two cases, both tracks here fit perfectly. while the title brings the idea “everything is lost”, this ep has everything ready to bring hotness to clubs.

2015 saw datassette in generous form, the original offal brought 100 tracks of alleged offcuts. while a rare few actually live up to this self-deprecation, it couldnt be a more misleading title. now, selected offal has been boiled down to a gravy-like substance for a vinyl release by the nice folks at shipwrec. after discussions with the artist, and suggestions from fans, seventeen prime cuts have been selected for the vinyl edition of offal, alongside a few brand new previously unheard nuggets and alternative versions. expect a buffet of delights. smooth electronica, abrasive funk, out-there acid experimentation, chip tune chicanery and everything in between from this chameleon of machine music.

after a well-received debut record on fellow leipzig imprint kann (route, 2015), tent tracks marks polo s second artist ep and his rst one for holger. here he further expands the hypnotic qualities of his productions and yet always remains in the blurry zone between techno and house. based on rather loopy grooves, his sound is moving as well as meditative it s extremely physical and remarkably spiritual at the same time. music to dance and lose your mind to. in all that its essentially polo one of leipzig s most established djs for almost two decades, rock solid and ever reliable.

lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress’. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “in waves”. the title speaks to neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘weh-in’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

komarken electronics makes his debut on brokntoys with expanded consciousness. with previous releases under his belt on solar one & stilleben, for brokntoys he serves up shimmering neo electro with early mornings following up with the fidgety bubble theory. on the flip, the title track runs deep into ether before delta funktionen steps up with a heavy remix of early mornings to close proceedings.

midwest groove master titonton duvante joins the god particle family with licentious gopa06. a1 licentious duvante displays his master of musical yin and yang with title track licentious. mischievous synth tones dip between a steady line of kicks and claps and bounce above a deep sea-dwelling bass line. b1 permittivity permittivity is a bottom heavy party starter with hints of acid and subtle vocal samples. warm synth keys wash over the last half of the track, perfect for sending out cosmic smoke signals. b2 sans compunction closing track sans compunction takes us on a darker drive, exploring the outer nebula. ominous synth lines dance along duvantes signature flirtatious rhythms.

san fran-based artist, tape_hiss releases his second ep on love notes and you can clearly hear both his sound and the label s maturing in tandem. moving on from the depth of his first record, love is a dog from hell, tape_hiss takes things into headier waters, going heavy on the acid and the rugged basslines on this 4 track ep. angelian war storm begins in exactly that fashion, with 303s squelching and bassbins rattling. this continues through the clear standout trackout, the vivian girls. the gears shift a bit on the b1 where sistrum boss, patrice scott is allowed to rework the vivian girls and does so in a warbly, dirty jazz fashion. tape_hiss then closes things out with the title track, realms of the unreal, which uses an appropriate sample annoucing, “this is me, yo. right here”, and it does very much sound to us like this budding artist is annoucing himself to the world in a most proper fashion. we can’t wait to hear what comes next from both artist and label.

fur coat return to crosstown rebels - the label that launched and empowered them to grow into the major techno force we know today, with their ’numbers ep, featuring a remix from us native vin sol. this is music that keeps you guessing. initially it appears dark and forceful, and suddenly a sound appears that results in a smile, a warm feeling that only the highest level of production can deliver. fur coat’s schedule is unrelenting. the last couple of months involving a standout set at dgtl festival, releasing on watergate records, remixing nicole moudaber & skin on mood records, combined with numerous festival appearances over the summer. resident of the popular night club lonely in san francisco, vin sol, founded an imprint with the same title earlier this year. a self confessed lover of the drum machine and regularly collaborating with matrixxman, sol has previously released on soo wavey, clone jack for daze and delft among others.

cbrb s latest triptych for phantasy takes their sound into a more dystopian direction, a world of concrete shopping centres, the occult and physically irresistible repetition. the title track “mecanique sauvage” is a muscular industrial / outsider house track, a stop start rollercoaster that constantly intensifies. one part a brutal exercise in poise and restraint, and one part undiluted disco excess. a contradictory beast of a track. something of a epic (at over 8 mins long) “children of the monolith” drops the tempo to 100 bpm and takes the listener on a very different kind of trip. a widescreen composite of tribal drums, sinister synths and the beguiling mantras of an arcane cult. don t touch the brown acid... “soda jerk” is the everything but the kitchen sink moment on the ep, a hymn to over indulgence. unhinged electronic body music, a gloriously relentless assault on the senses. resistance is futile!

there s an abundance of boogie-infused heat pouring out of freekwency s latest offering to keep you warm on those cold winter nights. ale chambers lays down a smooth, passionate vocal line on the title track before we get treated to some excellent alternative versions. the -first touch- mix is a buffed up jam that brings the electro funk into a leaner club-ready situation, while magic touch and luvraw work a tougher house thump underneath chambers vocal on the b-side. not content with making a peak time killer out of the original, the pairing also turn in a sublime ambient mix with the drums replaced by swirling, dubbed-out synth lines.

marcel vogel is back with this 8tracker including remixes by label mates reginald omas mamode iv and dear earth. lowslung grooves for an evening in front of the fireplace with your lady (or man), this ep was created in an collaborative effort by berlin singer khadija, keyboardist tim jules, guitarist jair wix and written and produced by marcel vogel. outstanding tracks are the sleazy moonchild and the title track human being.

decoder recordings is back with its second release. swedish dj and producer mattias fridell delivers strong driving techno on the ep called the tasker. it contains four tracks, and the title track immediately discloses what s the deal with this ep: quality loop based techno with fridell s signature clearly present. current world ecclesiarchy is the second track and on the same level as the tasker, while 33 endocytosis is a bit more funky. a pounding remix of that last track is delivered by the binary mind.

mgch comes through with a dexterous debut 12” for listen2me. this 4-track ep explores lush pulses and shadowy rhythms, balancing both introspection and evocation. label mate and long time collaborator serb flips the title track on its head, delivering an ever evolving and explosive remix.

yet more italians on optimo trax! jose manuel delivers 4 unique exotic, fourth world, tribal slabs of ritual music. a1, the great beast in outer space is actually an andrew liles track that jose has completely reworked and sprinkled his magick on. mr. liles is one of my favourite producers in the world, both for his solo work and for his input into my all time heroes nurse with wound. for those who know his work, having something by him that will work on a dancefloor may bring a smile to your face. thankfully i know him a bit and he was more than happy to grant permission for this to be released. a2, folklore is fourth world exotica reimagined for late night dance rites. aa1, ritual, is exactly what the title says it is. aa2, sisi leaves the dance floor completely and even though optimo trax is 100% aimed at djs, was simply too lovely to leave off.

hailing from bucharest, romania the vinyl speed adjust duo have been rapidly on the rise as producers and djs over the past few years with a back catalogue boasting material on pressure traxx, gilesku records, colours in music and visionquest where they return to here, as well accolades from leading industry names such as ricardo villalobos, raresh and rhadoo. here we see the pair back on fine form for visionquest following their carpe diem ep on the label in 2015 and taking the lead is title track retro which sees things taken down a percussive led path via modulating pot drums, murky bass flutters and screeching atmospherics. det riot follows and ups the energy levels with robust rhythms and stuttering vocal chops running with subtly unfolding arps, and further howling expansive swells hidden in the depths of the record before stretch souls rounds things off, closing with tumbling organic percussion, soft pad sweeps and a rumbling low end drive.

wrltd series continue with the 12-inch by maltese producer christopher buhagiar. previously known as n.d (natch records, subself records, reaktivate), now he hides under the name of hail blk. with launching of his own self-titled label, he took a step forward in his creative evolution, producing raw analogic techno on the edge between harsh post-industrial grooves and deep hypnotic soundscapes. now we can hear this kind of magic in original tracks on the a-side of the current ep. on the b-side there are 2 amazing remixes of the title track: the apocalyptic industrial anthem by tomohiko sagae (rodz-konez, hue helix), and the multi-layered hallucinogenic excursion by datura dilema (subsist, modularz).

nachtbraker is back! its been a huge year for the amsterdam deep house juggernaut who returns to dirt crew with his all new and colorfully titled really ties the room together ep. constantly on the move, hes found time between touring throughout europe, asia and south america to continue to push his a-typical house sound forward with this years heist release and his quirky jam busy bee that was featured on our deep love 100 compilation. this three tracker is jam packed with bouncing club tunes and a whole lot of flange. things kick off with the title track really ties the room together. it twists and turns over an unconventional but irresistible groove, shimmying shakers, brass stabs and a serpentine riff work together creating a super tight dance floor cut. rew begins somewhere in deeper territory, suspense building beneath the clouds, a rumbling bass rolls in from over the horizon before a glorious funk guitar blows the whole thing wide open, letting the suns rays burst through and that familiar nachtbraker good time energy shine in. the rerub of rew is something altogether new from our deep house protagonist, a break beat and casual groove guide gently towards an ever intensifying acid trip. dont be fooled by the lovely deep chords, things get nasty in the end. its best to expect the unexpected from our adventurous resident producer, and this ep is no exception.
