volume one delivers four unrelenting groovers, individually flavoured, each artist brings something fresh to this overall consistent collection of tracks. intricately complex in their creation, yet ultimately these tracks perform a simple task, much like the machines of the late r. goldberg.

the pieces were created as structured improvisations using a monophonic synth (primarily) along with a yamaha dx7 (borrowed from a friend) and possibly a guitar. recording was made on an older otari mx5050 1/2 8 track. mixing was done on a tascam m-50 console and a revox a77 1/4 machine. i recall the project happened in two bursts: i did half of it in september 85, then i finished up and edited the album together in december 85. i dont really recall making copies for anyone. i think i played it for a dozen people and that was it. just forgot about it. i remember jeff ament from pearl jam (green river back then) came by while i had it playing on my home stereo. he asked what it was and said he liked it. surprised me a little. with regard to overall aesthetic: i like the sound of machinery, but i enjoy the fragility of human error and human instinct. i like to put things into motion then climb aboard and drive. i can’t play an instrument (in the classical sense) for the life of me, so i’ve always just played things that are mostly choice rather than a convolution of style and technique. i guess you call that the brian eno school of rock.

shimza, real name ashley raphala, is one of south africas brightest young talents. ascendent, his 4 tracks debut e.p. on cadenza reveals solid production skills and an innate instinct for peak-time bangers. the opening track, congo congo is a dark ride over abysmal tom-tom drums, lively percussions and a gloomy bass lead, ignited dramatically by an ensemble of wide synthetic stabs and chords. in its dub- mix, the drums and the percussion become lighter without diminishing its dynamic tension. the overall weight of the leads and the stabs is reduced, leaving more space to its intense piano and string chords and swinging sub bass. shimza - secret melodies starts with an obscure bass line, but the intense twist of fractioned rolls and arpeggios bring an ascending piano progression that quickly blooms into an uplifting symphony. selector is a deeper cut that keeps the gaze on the dancefloor: the incessant hand clapping and a cloud of low frequencies bumps unexpectedly drag its hypnotic harmonies into a breath-taking drop.

no matter where the winds may blow, what storms may come or what pirates will do, the transatlantyk ship is still sailing. navigated for the last three years by zambon out of berlin, ultimately avoiding the shallow waters of the generic and constantly patrolling the seas in search of exciting sounds. after all that sailing the label just had to replenish its ranks with some fresh faces - those still capable of voyaging into the unknown. joining the crew is a young gun tamten, who by day serves as a vinyl pusher in warsaw s finest side one record store. what he does by night is not the matter of this short text, but we are sure he does a lot of it. hence his love for all things distant - from subaquatic pads and floating riffs, to new-age-y siren voices, otherworldly effects and percussion drenched in reverb. there is a lot of similarly distant, sun-bleached material on this five tracker, full of a druggy and hippy balearic feel. beautiful ambient jam przebudzenie is the stand out track, but znaki czasu is equally as good with its simple, yet memorable melody, reminding of dawns and sunsets on some god forsaken beach. sultry deepness of nieznajoma is followed by enchanting digital exotica of wyrocznia and wavey trip-hop cut po burzy . overall its one of the strongest eps that transatlantyk managed to co-opt into its growing catalogue. definitely one for the dreamers.

listening to unknown path s pathfinder for the first time is a claustrophobic experience. it s as if the tracks had been recorded to tape and left to decompose for 10 or so years, then dug up and re-recorded. a thick layer of grunge and an overall murky feel sets the tone for path 0.1 and continues throughout the ep. paths 0.2 and 0.3 add a more upbeat feel to proceedings, as the beats get scattered around like they were in a pinball machine. path 0.4 finishes off the experience by bringing the tempo back down, while all the time keeping the uneasy atmospherics that make this ep a unique and rewarding listen.

marco baileys 5th full-length album, one that he personally claims to be the best overall representation of his sound. with seventeen tracks comprising almost an hour and a half of music, he has ample room to stretch out and to give listeners an excellent portable version of his potent live show.

london minimal techno label trapped ldn turn their attention to new talent rhys samson, who gets freaky from the get go with the snaking beats and threads of psychoactive melodies and found sounds that make up the snappily titled -paramedic to the dancefloor-. cosmjn delivers a very different kind of remix of the original that has a more discoid flavour to it, although it maintains the late night trippiness that trapped prefer overall. -religious clowns- is a deeper jam that seeks to soothe, albeit with plentiful rippling details still coursing through its veins, which alan castro capitalizes on with a remix that gets even more intricate and strange.

anthony georges patrice is back with a whole ep on lossless and it sounds like an overall artistic start over. fantastic variety on all tracks and he opens a new part in his musical universe with electrofied and africanized tracks...really refreshing and great to play!

tyrees is an up and coming, london born and bred producer and dj with a heavy focus on breaks, bass and pads. his sound pays homage to and is an evolution of the elements that were so crucial in the uk dance music scene throughout the 90s and onwards. his love for hardcore, jungle and drum n bass of the early to mid ‘90s is principally important to the formation of his style. producers like tyrees are taking full advantage of the current wave of innovative and experimental styles of electronic dance music. with great respect and adoration, tyrees is combining percussive elements, rhythms, structures, samples and tempos from many genres and eras, creating familiar but fresh, unique and exciting sounds. aside from electronic dance music, tyrees is deeply interested in a broad spectrum of musical styles, notably the many sub-genres of jazz, soul and funk from the ‘60s and ‘70s, hip hop culture which was so heavily inspired by this music, and anything else from rock and orchestral pieces to world music and obscure osts. this obsession with music is apparent in the overall sound of his productions. “tidy” is a smooth and subtle journey through beautiful sample based pads, chopped breaks, synth lines and vocal samples. it is a gradually rising force, evolving with delicate bass and synth tones and a mysterious vocal narrative. it effortlessly transitions into a melodic latter half, concluding with a climactic, explosive drum

from brussels comes cleveland, born in luxembourg from an italian family, andrea mancini, a 28 years old music producer has been behind releases on john talabot’s hivern discs, oskar offermann’s white, munich’s permanent vacation (and others). cleveland is able to enthral and captivate his audience, putting influences from various genres into one smooth hypnotic, adventurous and personal journey. built around warm tones of analog synths, esoteric atmospheres and percussive drums, cleveland s productions have an overall dreamy feel without losing its dance floor focus. he arranges every sound and movement to work in fluid harmony, gently lifting dance floors off the ground before they realise they re floating. he will release two new eps in summer 2017.

having remixed depeche mode and dj hell as well as releasing a new fixmer/mccarthy single with douglas mccarthy (of nitzer ebb), 2017 has already proven to be a productive year for terence fixmer. with the new force ep, the berghain resident follows up on 2016 s beneath the skin ep (o-ton 97), offering four stylistically different but congenial techno scenarios for club use. the record s eponymous track on a1 doesn t think twice: the initial signal horn starts as sudden as the staggered kick drum rhythm, reoccurring throughout the cut s 6-minute playtime while sustained and oppressive screams from a synth, extra multifaceted ebm percussion and synth drones add to the overall sombre atmosphere of ôforceö. the musical vibe distinctly changes with ôsidewalkö which puts more focus on synth melodies û like its predecessor a techno cut per se, but with a stronger accent on hypnotic motifs. on b1 ômelting planetsö emphasises the kick: clocking in slightly slower than the other three tracks û at 122 bpm û the bass drum here sounds extra vivid, ever-present and spot-on, just as if terence was playing the drum kit sitting right next to you. with additional percussion and swirling melodies ômelting planetsö is a lulling, mesmerizing meditation in dub techno. ôstriking patternsö on b2 links to the best moments of force ep s a-side, combining bone-dry bass drum hits and distinctive brazen, banging noises, pulsing synths pads and sizzling surface sounds.

following the ‘frequency vs atkins – mind merge lp’ (march 2017), featuring the collaboration between orlando voorn and juan atkins, italian label out-er (out electronic recordings) welcomes long standing detroit producer terrence dixon for a 21 track triple vinyl pack ‘12.000 miles of twilight’, out in july 2017. this is dixon’s fifth album and follows his last ‘badge of honor’ released back in 2013. the legend has been putting out material since the mid -nineties. recognized worldwide for his visionary, futuristic sound, dixon unites ages of inspiration traversing diverse musical styles including electro, jazz and minimal sci-fi techno. this overall hypnotic approach can also be seen in his parallel project population one, which appeared on out-er respectively in early 2016 with two-tracker solo ‘temporary insanity ep’, as well as in late 2016 with ‘temporary insanity remixes’ which saw the label offering reinterpretations from cosmin trg, pangaea, voiski and label co-founder simone gatto. ‘12.000 miles of twilight’ remains an experimental techno asset offering a non-linear, emotionally absorbing journey into the singular experimental edge of the detroit artist, pulling the listener in all kind of directions from the opening track to the closing finale.

nice price deal !!! a co-production with benga ? the brilliantly sparse, bleepy >green eyes< ? is going to grab peoples attention, but the other three tracks here are easily as good. sarah goldielocks akwisombe makes outstanding modernist electro-pop with dark, emotionally intense lyrical themes and a hefty dj-friendly dubstep wallop, and is without question a talent who is here to stay. the ep is overall inspired by london, underground music scenes ? 2step / garage / grime and dubstep, paranoia, relationships and concealed emotions.

2 classics on one 12 single, gems excavated from the deepest realms of the tk disco vaults.on side a we have former foxy frontman ishmael ish ledesma with his sublime esoteric disco cut from 1979 called don t stop , a deep, late night diamond of a track that will appeal to the more left-field disco lovers out there. don t stop has long been a favourite with the diggers with it s sweet vocals, synth heavy production and overall cosmic vibe. a beauty of a track indeed and one of tk s lesser known cuts. side b sees fusion guitarist john tropea s 1979 cosmic classic living in the jungle , a long time spin of dj s like daniele baldelli and dj harvey. infusing tropea s rock sensibilities with the throb of the disco dance-floor the track is a low slung, midtempo groover that touches all the right spots. overall, this essential double-header is a must have for all disco heads and left-field dj fiends.

oberst & buchner are next up on freeride millenium and the two bavaria born, vienna based producers deliver an ep that offers their interpretation of what modern summer togetherness sounds like. the talented pair started making music together aged 15 and aim to cook up emotionally driven jams. they do so on labels like heimlich, underyourskin records, schönbrunner perlen, lokd, and always get the juices going, as they do once again here. beginning with the brilliant greg we dive into a breakbeat bath of summery chords as playful claves dance on the horizon. it is a melodically rich track with spiritual feelings that really bliss you out. on the moodier emile night time arrives and warm chords mix with jangling, organic glass and percussive tinkles that reflect rays of light. it s a perfectly jazzy and loose number that really suspends you in a rueful place. last but not least, embrace is a fluid intergalactic convention with sparse drum kicks weighed down by sombre synths. a skittish, dubstep style groove then comes in and elevates the track with gentle guitar licks and slithering synths adding colour, and overall it has the same zoned out feel as a thousand-yard stare. this is a brilliant mood ep that mixes up the synthetic with the organic, creating some fascinating grooves as a result. the release once again features original artwork from the ever talented daniel rajcsanyi. thanks for purchasing a real copy!

framed by two spoken word samples and wrapped in house and techno emotions, that know about electro and 90’s electronica too: the new, second album of the leipzig and berlin based producer and live artist martin enke aka lake people moves in a fresh way. this time he shifts towards a focus on the essentials of electronic club music: sounds and groove, rough and playful interweaved with the aesthetic particles of techno. with his “point ep”, released on the berlin based imprint krakatau records in late 2012, his creative life as a producer for melancholic driven club tunes took off. several top notch djs played the tune “point in time”, lake people started to tour world-wide with his mesmerizing live set and produced countless remixes for colleagues from all around the globe. in 2015 he finally released his first album “purposely uncertain field” on the munich based label permanent vacation and delivered eleven tracks at the interface of techno, ambient, experimental and electronic, that bewitch with hymnal chords, yearningly melodies, detailed production, elaborate sound design and an overall introspective, emotive feeling. now, just shortly after he published a fresh ep on the dresden based imprint uncanny valley, lake people drops “phase transition”, a new album consisting of ten haunting tracks full of dance suspense. he recorded all between 2016 and early 2017 on various vintage analog synthesizers, uad and other creative interfaces. to find out if his latest pure slamming tracks work deep, he tried them out during his live shows in order to catch some new ideas directly from the dance floor.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. as much as, in modern days, it has become increasingly difficult to pin things down to a specific genre this release brings very defined genres but also a refreshing feature, a constant change of energy in one single track, and most importantly, it all comes with this modern feel to it which indicates it is the new generation rising making justice to what ultrastretch stands for, surfacing fresh and new talents. signed by austrian duo foehn & jerome. the a side is of the ep consists of the genius idea that it is a relatively simple track, however, with the feel that so much is happening, the type when you listen to a loop but one you can listen to forever and not get tired of it, always the best sign. a rolling and constant bassline makes it into a super fat and rounded dancefloor groover, while on top you have these fragments of chopped up vocal samples in and out creating a sense of confusion, a mind drilling element is then complemented by very loose and fine hihats floating around. on the b side starts with quirky minimal track with a galloping kick throughout, when the open hihats slam in with a vocal it quickly develops into a very happy and playful housy vibe and just when you are riding, the clap slams in now on a tighter hat sequence followed by the break and rebuilding, when it comes back however it adds another element changing the energy yet again, through introducing a synthline. the quirky frog sounding noises throughout certainly makes it a super witty track overall.
