protect-u is the studio project of mike petillo and aaron leitko, who are associated with the new breed of dance music producers from in and around washington dc, coming from a similar background as ital, innergaze and beautiful swimmers, with a history of playing alongside mi ami, blues control, slava, steve moore & pissed jeans, among others. mike is also co-owner of the very cool record label future times, alongside andrew field-pickering a.k.a. maxmillion dunbar, who is also one half of beautiful swimmers.

following his release on peter van hoesens time to express late last year, sp-x drops his third ep for komisch. fans of >signal path experiments< and >field lines never end< will not be disappointed as the brussels - based producer serves up three more slices of uncompromising warehouse techno. lead track <the escape< has all the sp-x hallmarks - rock hard beats, thundering claps and a swinging groove that underpins eerie riffs and clanking metallic drums >stalker< reveals a more musical slant to sp-xs sound. it starts off with unsettling riffs, but soon the rolling drum-led arrangement changes tact and provides the backdrop for a growling chord climax. there is a similar concession on >attack pattern< bruising doubled-up drums and that unmistakably snappy sp-x percussion combine with subtle snare rolls to create a peak time arrangement. but once again an insistent chord sequence gives it the edge over functional techno. make sure to hunt this killer release down

romare is a young london to paris transient crate digger, collecting dusty snippets of undead voices and antiquated rhythms. once in his underground lab, these pieces of yesterday are chopped, spliced and reattached to create the sound of tomorrow. this ep explores the connection between the history of african and african-american culture in the form of collage to create musical conversations between the past, present and future.
samples of songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and films were carefully chosen and rearranged: rhythms from africa are integrated with voices from harlem, conversations about race and identity between writers and ethnomusicologists are constructed, speeches from activists are conjoined with the voices of prisoners. this process of combining pre-existing material has inspired three >meditations on afrocentrism<.
in keeping with black acres genre dodging output, romares merging of traditional rhythms of africa with the contemporary tempos of footwork and house is a bridge between the tradition sound palette of africa and future dance rhythm.

the debut palace brothers album was released in 1993 when much american music was going through a particularly bombastic period. in contrast >there is no one what will take care of you< sounded like a field recording, as though a tape of back porch confessionals recorded by alan lomax as an example of high southern gothic style, had been newly discovered and released.

nice price deal !!! vae victis is back for its 2nd release and is glad to welcome the very first debut of nightjars. with this 4 tracks ep the label shifts on a different musical path, sound and style wise. sound wise, both sides are written, mixed and produced on hardwares and polarized on a ferromagnetic tape. technically, side a (raw side) is mixed with a tough multitrack mixer brought to its saturation limit: the sound is indeed distorted, raw and unfriendly. while the flipside (clean side) is instead mixed with a big class a vintage studio mixer. the sound is brighter, richer of harmonics and the infrasounds are charged thru a wide dynamic range. style wise,the label shifts on a more broken beat field, lets call it bass, dubstep or whatever, but anyway something which should put this vinyl in the records bags of all the lovers of shed, peverelist and horsepower productions to name a few.

>aspen< is the name of christian loefflers single before his debut album on ki called >a forest<. the name of the single is not to be misunderstood as a dedication to the ski resort in colorado. its rather a dedication to christian loefflers home region in the north of germany. loeffler walked out into the forests near darss, to take field recordings of the trees that commonly grow in that area, which are called >aspen<. the landscape near darss is characterized by signs of storm and rough sea climate, but is also considered as a popular health resort in germany. the tracks on >aspen< create this contrary atmosphere: noise and silence, destruction and peacefulness, electronic sounds and traditional instruments unite in harmony. the cover artwork for >aspen< was taken by christian loeffler himself in the forests of darss.

stefan schutz aka juno6 belongs to the society of the leipzig new school, which for the last 5 years has cut a path through emotions and change in diverse regions. his particular real estate is comfortably between deeper house and thoroughly scrutinized techno. sometimes he tends in one direction, at other times the opposite. all the while juno6 captivates both listeners and dancers alike with something new. his live sets are always an occasion – sound expeditions in the most literal sense embedded powerfully, yet imminently fresh as they are bound to tradition. he even dials up the the ambient/electronic field with project beautiful planet earth, or together with friend daniel stefanik as sensual. the sonic awareness of juno6 is expressed consistently as a potent degree of warmth, which paints a distinct lively and long-lasting tone on club music. the tone is hardly useful as a flavor of the month, but rather, a music with stamina and character. his track >guununk< is for more than a few the quiescent highlight of the fat 5zig compilation. on his second from fat, he displays the juno6 portfolio fully and expands his present effect with a portion of funkiness and a sprinkle of pop – at least on one of the cuts. with clever vocals mr. schulz informs us yet again.

san francisco electronic/techno pioneer kit clayton as the first in a series of new electronica releases under the banner microsolutions for mega problems. kit clayton has been releasing music on labels such as mille plateaux, seventh city, plug research for the last few years as well as his own orthlorng musork label. he is the producer of the current left-field hip-hop faves gold chains which is also released on his label in the us. kit clayton is at the front of a movement of lap-top electronic artists such as herbert, bola, sutekh, pole etc. these two tracks are firmly in the electronic dance field and have been specially recorded for soul jazz records.

for the first album ever being released on ki we invited biodub, a producer/dj from the north of germany, who impressed us with his fusion of dub, techno, electronica and is a musician throughout. bringing in his experience as the drummer of instrumental band noetics and based on a minimalistic foundation, his tracks are playful in a microscopically way. in between deep bass lines and characteristic dub chords, various sounds coming from field recording sessions and sometimes also acoustic instruments, making this piece of music extremely warm and alive. biodub tries to transform visual impressions into his music. he finds most of these impressions in nature but sometimes also in machines or buildings in connection with their environment. the album is equally comfortable on the dance floor as in the living room. but you would rather enjoy his music on an open field in the nature than on your couch. the album will be released as a full 2 x12 inch lp, and cd in folded hardcover with photography, graphic and layout coming from ki s amélie kai and since it leaves so much space for interpretation, there will be a 12 inch-single with remixes of stereociti and koi.

merc music proudly presents new artist edward, a new light emerging from the black country underground. having passed mark e a cd full of left field house music maxa & naxa finally make their way onto vinyl with merc. here lies deep distorted driving 4/4 beats and looped disco monotony, following in the vein of previous merc releases this pushes the sound even further.
